Bionic Commando: Rearmed is fantastic.. And extremely noob-friendly, with still enough challenge. It's funny too. Shouldn't be too much shooting..

Guitar hero games are always good but I suppose it depends on your musical prefrence as most of the tracks are rock also Mario kart wii is always fun to play with friends.

EDIT: Peggle for the xbox 360 has online and offline co-op I think and also if you wait a couple of weeks Plants Vs Zombies is coming out on xbox 360 which will have co-op.

Tales of Vesperia might be a good idea - is it for the 360?
I'll look into the other Kirby games too.

Boot up the old systems and/or XBLA and/or WiiWare and pick up Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Or an old brawler like Double Dragon or Battletoads or the Power Rangers Movie game (how's that for bad nostalgia?). Let's see, what else...007: Everything or Nothing for the Xbox and PS2 has a pretty good co-op mode that my sister and I really got into, but it might not be for everyone.

Actually, thanks for making this post. My roomie and I are going to start a video review series based around this concept, and I was looking for some ideas. This works perfectly.

Do hackn'slashers count as "fighters"? If not, I'd go with DW: Empires.
If so, Little Big Planet is probably the way to go.

Try picking up some of the "Warriors" games, they have excellent co-op as well as level-up system. If you have a 360, try picking up Warriors Orochi 2 or Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2...not sure which ones the PS3 has though

I like old, old co-op games like Battletoads, Contra, Double Dragon but I think he might get annoyed if we run out of lives and have to restart the whole game, lol.

Little Big Planet has been recommended a couple of times, but alas the PS3 is one of the only consoles I don't have. Feel free to keep mentioning PS3 titles though in case other people are looking for good co-op games (i.e. Nooners :) ).

Bubble Bobble might be fun, actually. Although the timer always made me panic.

If you can find them hunt down the Hunter the Reckoning games. Really fun co-op. RPG hack'n slash. First one was Xbox/GC only. Second was PS2 only. Third (my fav) is Xbox only.

I would like to encourage you to look into Emulators: games for the old Consoles such as Snes, Genesis(mega drive) and perhaps older. The old games are more 2player friendly in my opinion; specially like an old classic Micro Machines (fun little racer).
Yeah, Micro Machines rocked - it's not co-op (I don't remember a co-op mode?) but I used to have lots of fun with it. I'm not a racing game fan, but the top-down view and novelty levels made it much fun. (Oh, and the custom levels... ahh, the fun of making traps!)
When I was younger, I used to play Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (and the ones after) with my brother - usually he used to be sonic, and I used to be tails. Good thing about being Tails is if you die it doesn't matter, but Sonic controls the action, so remember not to shove tails off the screen all the time :p. Iirc in Sonic 3 having 2 players made some of the levels different, as Tails can carry Sonic to parts of the level Sonic can't get to.

My wife and I enjoy playing Fat Princess (with the Fat Roles download) on PS3. You can't do Co-op on one system without the DL though. :p Any of the Dynasty Warriors games or their knock offs are pretty fun for two players.
If noone has said it Little Big Planet obviously is a simple platformer. My 63 year old mother plays it with her grandkids.

So no co-op puzzle games then (barring the Mario Party mini-games)? I keep getting an image of the sidequest in Majora's Mask with Kafei in the thief's hideout whenever I think about a co-op puzzle game.

Hunter the reckoning games have got fairly good reviews, sounds slightly different and are like £3 on Ebay :D

It's some old farts, but the PS2 have some good co-op titles - namely Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Darkwatch (Nothing adds intimacy to a relationship like running around as a pair of vampire cowboys shooting indian zombies to bits)
