Well, pay day is coming on friday for me and I figured for my... efforts at work I'd treat myself to a fancy new Role playing game. So I was hoping one or several people here would be kind enough to give me some recommendations. You know, fun and awesome hacky-slashy, sword and shield, magic and dragons and whatnot games! JRPG or WRPG is fine, but only on Ps2 or 360. Believe me I have searched around myself but I'd rather get an informed opinion off of several gamers not wikipedia articles.

There will be cookies and kittens to all who assist me!

It would be helpful if you listed some RPGs you have played and what you did/didn't like about them.

Anyway, there's the Tales of series; the Abyss (PS2) and Vesperia (360).

Dark Souls seems to hit every checkbox for what you described.

Although it has a reputation for being very hard, and the hacking and slashing is a lot slower and strategical than most action-RPGs. Besides that it has multiple classes, stats, armor, weapons, dragons, undead, magic, everything you'd want. Plus it has a really great dark fantasy atmosphere that is easy to get immersed in and can be really rewarding at times.

Actually, I'd say the better bet is probably Dragon's Dogma based on the description of what he was looking for. I was not prepared for how much I ended up liking the game. It is sufficient I think to say that I'm going to purchase Dark Arisen because in the tradition of capcom, the seem content to pretend to be too inept to produce DLC and instead release the game a second time with more content.

And, if you were to get Dragon's Dogma, I'd probably just wait a few weeks for Dark Arisen anyhow.

Here's my PS2 RPG collection! Obviously I'd recommend them all:

Baldur's Gate II: Dark Alliance
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King
Kingdom Hearts
Kingdom Hearts 2
Odin Sphere
Persona 4
Shadow Hearts
Suikoden III
Tales of the Abyss

Baldur's Gate is like Diablo. Both Final Fantasies and Dragon Quest feature turn-based combat. Persona 4 you've played already, I think, based on your avatar. The Kingdom Hearts games are more "hacky-slashy" and great fun. Another (cuuriously sidescrolling) action hack n slash RPG is Odin Sphere (gorgeous, fun game). Tales of the Abyss has that "active time battle" or something like that, it mixes real time combat with turn-based elements (this is another great, fun game).

Based on your description I would specifically recommend Dragon Quest VIII, Odin Sphere and Tales of the Abyss :p

I second any recommendations of the Tales series. Vesperia is fantastic, and Abyss is solid.

For PS2, Xenosaga was pretty cool, Disgaea is awesome, Grandia 3 is solid, Dragon Quest VIII is good if you like old school JRPGs, and the Shadow Hearts series looks pretty awesome though I can't actually verify that because my PS2 blew up before I found out they existed (and I accidentally left my copy of Persona 4 inside when I took it to get recycled. Truly a tragedy).

I know it's outside your parameters, but the works of Spiderweb Software for PC are straightforward, enjoyable CRPGs. Graphics are super lackluster, but interesting premises and enjoyable gameplay along with pretty low prices, I think. Adequately scratch your itch in time of need

If you're looking for cheap and old school try Doom and Destiny in the XBLA Indie area. It's an funny spoof on JRPGs, 90's cartoons and geek culture. I had a ton of fun with it and actually bought it twice. once on 360 and again on Desura for PC.

You want Dark Souls. The only thing that I'd say is that take your time. It's a godsend I tell you. Except for a few points in the game, it's not that difficult. It's just unforgiving, not difficult.

All I can think of from your description is all the Elder scrolls games I have played minus Morrowind cause that isn't on the 360. Oblivion is great fun and I have had to have logged atleast 200 - 300 hours on it. Skyrim is also great and I have put 430 hours into it. Though you probably have already played those.

I have to throw my vote int with Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance 2. I have good memories of playing that game(though they are very fuzzy because I was like 6). You should definately try it.

Honestly I think you should get a PC and pick up The elder scrolls Morrowind, All the fallout games, Jade empire, Knights of the old republic, and Dragon Age origins, but if you cant afford it you cant afford it.

So PS2 games I recomend include Star ocean: till the end of time, Final fantasy X, and Dragon Quest 8.

For Xbox 360 I recommend The elder scrolls Oblivion, The elder scrolls Skyrim, maybe Morrowind but I dont think its on the 360 just the original xbox but backwards compatibility might work for it, Fallout 3 and New vegas

Have you played all the Atlus games on the PS2?

Most of them are pretty good.
-Just avoid games like Choro or whatever that horrid racing game is called.

Madwarper was correct I probably should have mentioned the one's I've already played. XD. I've already played Skyrim, Jade Empire, Morrowind, Dark souls, FF10 and 12.

Thanks a bunch everyone. I'm gonna get all of the games suggested here, I think I'll start with Odin Sphere and Tales of Abyss. Oh, Cookies and Kittens for everyone!
