I have a fair few Chinese films at this point. Red Cliff is the pick of the bunch, 5+ hours of beautifully shot carnage, intriguing characters, and puts emphasis on the importance of strategy.

In many ways it reminded me of Seven Samurai.

Pan's Labyrinth - Spanish thriller film about a young girl during the spanish civil war.

Sergio Leone's Man with No Name trilogy.

Half the actors speak in English and are American, this is true, but the director is Italian and all these films were filmed in Italy. Hilarious dubbing abound, so be warned.

These were the movies (Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly) that put Clint Eastwood on the map, and they're freaking awesome to boot. Also having to do with Mr. Leone is Once Upon a Time in the West. If you have a problem with Westerns, watch these movies. Problem solved.

The movie In Bruges its not foreign in the sense that it is black and white or not in English but it was not a major release in the U.S. and not a lot of people ever really saw it at least where I live.

Pratically everything by Guillermo del Toro specifically Pans Labyrinth and The Devils Backbone.

Others I may recomend are The Lives of Others and Life is Beautiful both are wonderful and heartbreaking movies.

"Recycle" by the pang brothers. It's the closest thing to watching a Silent Hill movie I've ever done.
Far more so than the actual Silent Hill movie.

Let The Right One In- This is how to make a vampire movie. Especially good if you were bullied a lot as a child.

Harakiri- The story of a ronin who's Lord is forced to commit Seppuku. Very entertaining, and yet also heavy on messages- kind of like The Dark Knight.

Pan's Labyrinth- Duh.

El Crimen Ferpecto- An excellent exercise in dark comedy. Very funny.

Pans' Labyrinth is the only foreign film I can think of that is pretty good.

No one's said it yet, and it's the one foreign film I've actually seen (and loved). The Wave, it's a German film about a teacher and his class who are doing this thing on autocracy, and... Argh I can't explain it, save me Wikipedia!

No Das Boot? I'm shocked an appalled, sirs and madames.

Stalingrad, Joyeux Noel (about the 1914 Christmas Truce in WWI), The Emperor and the Assassin, and since I'm an American and they're technically foreign films, the James Bond movies.

I'll have to dig through my collection of foreign titles and look up some more.

Funny how you should mention "THE MAN WITH NO NAME" trilogy.

"The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" is my all-time favorite movie. The characters are deeply developed; hundreds of memorable lines and moments; and the music is superb. It deserved more awards than it received. I can't believe I forgot the trilogy were foreign films. Great recommendation to those who haven't seen them.

[HEADING=2]The Killer[/HEADING]

Perhaps the single greatest action film ever made (Besides Aliens of course), this Hong Kong epic is most definitely the best film by John Woo, better even than Hard Boiled. It follows the assassin Ah Jong (played by Chow Yun Fat) as he does one final job to pay for the surgeries of a girl he accidentally blinded on a hit. It also follows the policeman who tracks him, who discovers that they aren't so different after all.

It's pure action porn, from start to finish, in glorious slo mo. To get an idea of just how over the top the action sequences are, here's one of the many in this film.


If you love action films, you NEED to see this.
