Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt is awful. It relies on sex jokes and gross humor, and really nothing more. I think Gainax was trying to say something about North America with it... but it was all lost on me as I was too busy wondering why the hell I was watching this pile of shit (Literally, it had a giant shit monster).

Gantz, of course, is also terrible.

Queen's Blade is pure pornography, so don't go into it expecting ANYTHING but that. Quite a few people have made that mistake.

There's probably more I can think of, but I'm tired.

I know a lot of people here are going to hate me for this, but I'd avoid Blue Sub No.6 if I were you.

Before anybody rages at me, hear me out. The problem I have with Blue Sub No.6 isn't the bad animation quality or effects or even voice acting, those are forgivable for having such a low budget. My problem is that after Hayami gets on the submarine, there's next to no plot development until right at the end when they confront Zorndyke. It's the same problem Serial Experiments Lain had, just tenfold. There's no real interest or drive to keep watching unless you want more pointless military-speak and explosions. Sure, it has its good points, but I'd hardly say it's worth it.

Sorry, BSN6 fans. :/
Blue Sub No. 6 had great animation even if the CG effects didn't age well at all they're usually obscured enough or not present enough to be that big of a problem, the voice acting was good too the Dub was solid though not great and the Japanese version was damn good, and the pacing was great as well especially for such a short show it kept everything moving without being overwhelming and it didn't just sit there and dabble though it did drop the plot for like one episode, to concentrate on character development, but the characters were, for the most part likeable enough, for this not to be a problem.

Also, on Serial Experiments Lain. it only has a minor pacing problem, like when it delves into pure mind fuckery for an episode, but even that helps better establish parts of the plot, I.E. what blurring the line between reality and the wired is causing, what Lain really is or exploring the wired as a parallel reality or upper layer of the real world... though it does bottle neck sometimes, due to it's method of story telling, which can best be described as answering questions with more questions. this really keeps the plot from becoming a convoluted mess but keeps it moving and open enough for interpretation, without diving head first into the EVA style, known as, "we're not gonna tell you shit..."

Edit: hooray, for bad grammar, that I don't feel like editing...

Yeah, dude, That's kind've of the point. Pretty much the whole point actually. That doesn't make it bad.

What! You take that back! I'll admit it didn't quite accomplish what It was trying to but it's still worth a viewing.

Spice and Wolf, Big O, and Serial Experiments Lain are all extremely good shows. There are plenty more anime out there that are genuinely bad that you don't have to resort to nitpicking.

And Read or Die is a great action anime. Possibly disappointing if you were expecting some more storytelling, but that wasn't really what ROD is about.

I need to catch up on my current giant-list-o'-anime before I can branch out more, but I want to watch some series being mentioned here (like Clannad). ....My current bunch is fairly varied, but I need a good romance.
Then by all means put Clannad at the top of your list. It's funny, it's romantic, it's emotional. Arguably the best anime I've ever seen, and I'm not exactly an avid romance watcher. It's just that good.

Highschool of the Dead (If it wasn't for the beyond over-excessive fan-service, this would probably have been good)
Naruto
Togainu no Chi
Welcome to the N.H.K

It really depends on what sort of anime you're after.

It IS at the top of my list. My "watch this after you're not busy watching every other series you've got already" list.

The "this is the giant list of series you have but have not watched" list is comprised of 29 series [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17074544/animetowatch.txt] at the moment. A couple still ongoing. How I shall find this time is a mystery to me. Sleepless nights and multitasking days, I suppose.

Anime war incoming!!!

I'd have to agree with Eri.Gainax don't have a bad title. And Panty and Stocking was a cartoon when you look at it.It's what makes adult swim great with some crazy Japanese wackiness.

Highschool of the Dead is what a B-movie in Japan would be.It reminds me of Alien vs Ninjas and all that other ridiculous stuff they have there.

Fairy Tail for now is great.

The entire medium is going to shit. There's little innovation because it's safe to make an action mecha/girlfight anime with a harem...That being said you should see Kampfer. The anime doesn't take itself seriously in any way and has pretty much all the ridiculous genres in it.

Also Black Lagoon might honestly be one of the best animes lately. It's dark, gritty has awesome fight scenes and reminds me a lot of Tarantino movies.

Edit:This is kinda the list of animes you should avoid NOT watching.

I'd recommend watching all of those actually, although I've never seen togainu no chi. And NHK did have a shitty ending, but the rest was good. As for the "excessive" fan service, That is the point.

I've noticed a lot of you seem to be complaining about a show having something it is supposed to. It's like watching opera and complaining they keep singing for some reason.

Jinki Extend- too safe, nothing exciting

Bleach, Naruto, One Piece- they last forever and twelve days.
Agreed on One Piece, but Bleach and Naruto are good for just plain action.
Not seen Naruto but Bleach being good for action? Hah!

The fight scenes are ridiculous. They stand there, staring at each other then slide towards each other, one gets damaged and rinse and repeat...

So fucking stupid.

Avoid Please Twins and all the shitty fan service anime. High school of the Dead, Ikkitousen, Kanokon.

Umineko No Naku Koro Ni should be avoided in my opinion if you're watching it because Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (which I reccomend) peaked your interest. People likely disagree with me on this, but the whole mystery time-flow style plot comes off as forced to me, and I constantly feel like I'm waiting for the main character to fall in line and ask the right questions.

To be fair, I haven't seen how it ends. I lost interest after powering through the first half.

Noooooo! I find it funny, and the characters likeable. Kind of lost momentum about half way though, but is great for ecchi humour.

I'm a huge Gainax fan and Panty and Stocking was the first of their shows I've ever seen that I actually thought was bad. It's no worse than the average episode of Aqua Teen, but I really expect more from Gainax. Also He Is My Master, while not absolutely terrible, was at least INCREDIBLY generic.
