I know a lot of people here are going to hate me for this, but I'd avoid Blue Sub No.6 if I were you.
Before anybody rages at me, hear me out. The problem I have with Blue Sub No.6 isn't the bad animation quality or effects or even voice acting, those are forgivable for having such a low budget. My problem is that after Hayami gets on the submarine, there's next to no plot development until right at the end when they confront Zorndyke. It's the same problem Serial Experiments Lain had, just tenfold. There's no real interest or drive to keep watching unless you want more pointless military-speak and explosions. Sure, it has its good points, but I'd hardly say it's worth it.
Sorry, BSN6 fans. :/
Blue Sub No. 6 had great animation even if the CG effects didn't age well at all they're usually obscured enough or not present enough to be that big of a problem, the voice acting was good too the Dub was solid though not great and the Japanese version was damn good, and the pacing was great as well especially for such a short show it kept everything moving without being overwhelming and it didn't just sit there and dabble though it did drop the plot for like one episode, to concentrate on character development, but the characters were, for the most part likeable enough, for this not to be a problem.
Also, on Serial Experiments Lain. it only has a minor pacing problem, like when it delves into pure mind fuckery for an episode, but even that helps better establish parts of the plot, I.E. what blurring the line between reality and the wired is causing, what Lain really is or exploring the wired as a parallel reality or upper layer of the real world... though it does bottle neck sometimes, due to it's method of story telling, which can best be described as answering questions with more questions. this really keeps the plot from becoming a convoluted mess but keeps it moving and open enough for interpretation, without diving head first into the EVA style, known as, "we're not gonna tell you shit..."
Edit: hooray, for bad grammar, that I don't feel like editing...
