I think a better thing for the OP would be to post genre's or story archetypes that he doesn't like, otherwise this whole post is like shouting into the dark and expecting directions on how to get through
but as for recommendations: there are very few that I actually dislike since I have a huge collection.
but I think Gunslinger Girl so far is the only one to avoid simply because it felt a little slow to me other than that, there's not really much that I wouldn't recommend

Nana to Kaoru
Only seen 1 ep but my god, in short; if you want to see S&M and bondage, just go onto a porn site instead.

I watch anime with my Wife so she loves girl animes like Host CLub and fruits basket.
I watch them with her but when I'm with friends I watch stuff like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun.
I also enjoyed Fullmetal alchmist (have not seen brotherhood yet), death note, wolf's rain and to a lesser extent claymore (weird ending but otherwise good) and ghost in a shell.

I wanted to know what animes were just plain bad and I should stay clear of;
My main example was Gantz: Really slow, Hopeless Story, Crap Ending.
Another one I would avoid is Hack sign: the whole thing just seemed to drag on too much, plus the main character seemed like a big whiney baby.

Since you have a large collection prehaps you could give me some to stay away from?

Neon Genesis Evangelion

- a scene at train station where nothing happens for ages, the only noise is cicadas
- the most annoying characters ever created by mankind
- long periods of boredom and irrelevance spliced with overly faux-intellectual rhetoric and the most ridiculous designed machines/storylines created by mankind

Starship Troopers (the anime and the horrible film) are better than this.
I have to agree with you on this one. I did enjoy the occasional battle and the music was cool.

I have to disagree with Starship troopers. The first one was a blast but the second was horrid B grade. Have not seen the anime. Is it good?

The second half of death night.

Once a certain character (you'll know who) dies, stop watching. It's a perfectly fine, if depressing, conclusion to a well made show. The rest of the series just meanders and spirals downward in terms of quality after that

Lucky Star.

It had such a massive fanbase on the anime site I sometimes visit, I decided to give it a try, and... WTF? This is like Azumanga Daioh, only without the fun.

I'm getting the feeling I should stay away from: Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, One Piece and Bleach because they go forever. I think One Piece is up to 500 episodes?

I guess you should avoid animes as a whole... That way you spare yourself of a lot of wasted hours.
"Time you enjoy wasting was not wasted" I dunno who said that but there it is.

This is also reason why I started this post, I did WASTE money and time watching some bad series. I'm getting alot of good info on series to avoid tho.

11 Eyes is one. Don't be fooled by the awesome opening like I was! Its crap.

Also, avoid Clannad and Clannad After Story like the PLAGUE. Avoid it!

So...

Incredibly...

DEPRESSING!
It is depressing, but it's sooo incredibly good!! I watched half the first season, couldn't bring myself to watch after story. Completed Nagisa's story in the visual novel, couldn't bring myself to go on, but I'm still hooked on this series!! It's werid though because it's like the Canadian government. I'm at a complete deadlock with no progression!!

On Topic:

Avoid: Zero no tsukaima - huge cash cow, I don't even know why they made this
Toradora - just stereotypical... bad
Shakugan no Shanna - this one is more personal opinion, it just seemed a bit childish and the plot is mostly forgettable.

Animes to avoid? for me..almost EVERYONE OF THEM!
i'm not saying that 90% of them are bad, but most of the manga-adapted animes are very pale in comparison to their manga counterpart (personal opinion). While there are still many good ones even though its adapted from mangas.

my conclusion : most manga adapted animes/movies fail. hence i cannot give specific answers. but i can give recommended ones to watch.
Whats good cause I think I do agree that alot of Manga turned Anime end up sucking due rushed endings.

I need to catch up on my current giant-list-o'-anime before I can branch out more, but I want to watch some series being mentioned here (like Clannad). ....My current bunch is fairly varied, but I need a good romance.
Then by all means put Clannad at the top of your list. It's funny, it's romantic, it's emotional. Arguably the best anime I've ever seen, and I'm not exactly an avid romance watcher. It's just that good.
I have finished Clannad, twice now, now im just getting the DVDs

but does anyone kno if there are any other good romances like clannad?
