Umineko No Naku Koro Ni should be avoided in my opinion if you're watching it because Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni (which I reccomend) peaked your interest. People likely disagree with me on this, but the whole mystery time-flow style plot comes off as forced to me, and I constantly feel like I'm waiting for the main character to fall in line and ask the right questions.
To be fair, I haven't seen how it ends. I lost interest after powering through the first half.
I found Higurashi extremely boring. I think I'm on episode 6 and I just can't be assed with it. It doesn't interest me in the slightest.
Umineko on the other hand I honestly enjoyed. At the very least the whole re-setting thing is actually explained in the context of the anime whereas in Higurashi it just happens.
That's probably the difference there, you watched Umineko first and enjoyed it, I watched Higurashi first and didn't. They're very, very similar in themes, but I guess after you see Higurashi where everything is developed, then Umineko where it's a rehash of themes, it feels like a dumbed down retread, while vice versa Higurashi feels like it's too slow getting to the point.
They do explain the repeating though, but you're not meant to even question it much until they start making you understand what's really happening. But of course you expect the explanation off the bat given Umineko had to do it, being the following series and all.
It's like a movie that shocked you building up to a twist, with a sequel that needs to top it while making sure to include the same twist as well. It's faster, more violent, and adds to the ideas, but it's usually less innovation and clarity as a result.
Just my observations of course, it's all open to opinion. This is just the way I see it, given Umineko is the spiritual sequel.
