Chrono Crusade: Oh my (Insert Diety Here), the Japanese should not make animes around Catholicism. I wouldn't make one about Shintoism because I didn't grow up around it long enough to understand the subtle things and I wish the Japanese thought the same thing.
I'm surprised more people didn't say this. The direction the anime took was like a punch in the face. I'll accept that maybe a demon army and a city sized monstrosity weren't in the budget, but the things they do are just really, really stupid. It's one thing to do a divergent series (ala FMA), it's another to look at what the source did and say, "fuck it."

Also, the villain shoots the fucking Pope. What a god awful ending.

For those of you who cant understand Evangelion i'll spell it out for you.

A group of beings called the First Ancestral Race that have the powers of what we would consider god make other beings(Adam and Lilith)giving each half of their godness (Adam getting power and Lilith getting knowledge)and sent them across the universe to seed life. The First Ancestral race feared a race combining Adam and Lilith's power because if they did they would become gods like they were. Referencing the biblical story of the fruits of knowledge and power.
Adam got to earth first 4 billion years ago and created the angels and Lilith crashed into earth by accident later. when Lilith crashed her lance of longinus the key to turning Adam and Lilith off was destroyed so Adams lance turned Adam off to prevent the combination of Adam and Lilith the first ancestral race feared.
Lilith made humans and eventually Selee basically the Illuminati found Lilith and used the information they got studying her to find Adam. They activated Adam with his lance and caused him to destroy himself so they could transport him back to Japan for their plans.
However they knew that with Adams awakening the angels would attack so they used the DNA of Adam to make the Evangelions except Unit 1 which was made from Lilith to fight the Angels.
The show is about as you know the Evangelion pilots fighting the Angels who are drawn to Lilith because she is the active seed on the planet and if they come into contact with her Lilith will awaken, kill all of humanity and make whatever angel got to her the dominate race. and all the while being manipulated by Selee to finish their plans which was to combine Adam, Lilith and Humanity into one godlike being to end all human suffering forever.

Also 90% of everythign from the angels names (which are named after real angels in the bible) to the construction of Nervs base to the Lance of Longinus itself is meant to be a reference.

Notes
Rei is a clone of shinji's mom and also the holder of the Soul of Lilith.
Karaou is the holder of Adams soul and the 17th angel
Gendo wanted to do something similar to Selee but in a way that didn't destroy all of humanity
And the reason why Kids pilot the evas is because the evas being artificial constructs dont have souls so Selee put the souls of the kids mothers into the evas as used their mothers love for them as a means to allow the kids to pilot the evas.

Basilisk wasn't awful, but it was pretty humdrum.
[small] also I love Gantz...[/small]
I totally hated Basilisk. :p I wanted to murder every single character... except for maybe 2 or 3 of them, and they got murdered by other characters. Grr. Mostly I disliked the main female character; she was terrible. (For me, I can't enjoy a show unless I really like at least one of the characters, and Basilisk had some of the least likeable people every, imho.)

I'd also say Mnemosyne (did anyone say that already?) unless watching a lady be raped/tortured to death in episode 1 -- and then it got worse! -- sounds like fun for you and your wife. ;p

Then by all means put Clannad at the top of your list. It's funny, it's romantic, it's emotional. Arguably the best anime I've ever seen, and I'm not exactly an avid romance watcher. It's just that good.
It IS at the top of my list. My "watch this after you're not busy watching every other series you've got already" list.

The "this is the giant list of series you have but have not watched" list is comprised of 29 series [http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17074544/animetowatch.txt] at the moment. A couple still ongoing. How I shall find this time is a mystery to me. Sleepless nights and multitasking days, I suppose.
Negima the anime? Really? Just stick to the manga. The anime voice acting and plot is terrible [imo]

It's quite rare for me to read a manga. Mainly because the public library near here has next to nothing, I can't find the manga I want in the stores near here (nor on Amazon), and I don't have anything I could put scanlations/digital copies on and actually read off of. Anime, on the other hand, I can convert and toss on my PSP, albeit rather smushed (and where applicable, with shoddy subs).

Also, I'm immune to bad voice acting unless it is lethally bad, which I have only encountered once. I know I have, but I burned the series out of my head so I don't know what it was. (I know it was a dub, that's it.)

Meh. If I had something like a Kindle, I'd read more manga, since I could just toss it on there, but I doubt that'll happen anytime soon. As it stands now, anime is preferable since I can multi-task and/or watch it on the go.

I was walking through my local DVD shop and saw tons and tons of new anime which I haven't seen before. Like random titles which looked pretty cool, but I haven't kept up to date with my anime. Last one I saw was 'Death Note' which was awesome btw. So I was wondering if people could recommend me some Animes to avoid, either due to creappy endings or just generally bad.

I saw Gantz and I would not recommend that to anyone, the ending was really stupid and the whole series (series 1, I know they made a series 2 but I never saw it) was really slow anyway.

But yeah, animes which were really bad and I should avoid.

KEEP in mind that I watch anime with my wife who enjoys girly anime so I can't count being girly as an anime to avoid, otherwise please put down why you think it was lame.
You probably should have done an "Anime to not avoid" thread instead, because that would be an easier list. Mind you, there's so many of those threads that doing a search would get better results than starting a new one I guess. Just like movies, music, and any other popular culture item, 90% of Anime isn't very good, so my general response is "most of it". Use the same criticial facilities that you would use to discern if a western film was bad before actually seeing it, such as:

Quick steps to determine if a film/anime/book/whatever is potentially shit:

* Look at the cover. Whoever said you can't judge a book by its cover should have added the qualifier "but you can sure make a few educated guesses, especially if there are big Anime boobies on the front".
* Read the blurb on the back. Does the story seem thuddingly cliched, like something you've seen dozens of times before? This could be a warning sign.
* How much does it cost? It may seem strange in this day and age, but you do often get what you pay for. Clearance prices might be an indicator that it's not selling, which might be an indicator that no-one with a brain likes the shit.

Good luck.

Bleach didn't do anything for me. Filler, filler, and more filler. I realize that Naruto, Inu Yasha, and countless others are guilty of the same, but at least they have interesting characters and fleshed out premises that can make filler entertaining or at the very least tolerable.

As a general rule, when the plot synopsis is " is an ordinary year old <MAN/BOY> attending when one day, a appears from and may or may not demand to . Wacky hijinks ensue!" then don't bother.

The same applies if "NOW HE HAS TO USE HIS TO PROTECT <i don't even care anymore>" is in there somewhere.

Also fuck Elfen Lied, Gantz, Gunslinger Girl, Panty/Stocking, ALL Shonen Jump anime (Naruto, One Piece, Gintama, Bleach), Neon Genesis Evangelion, Higurashi (sorry, guys), Umineko (less sorry, guys), ALL Type-moon stuff (Fate/Stay go fuck yourself, Lunar Legend shut the fuck up), ALL Key stuff (Clannad, Kanon, I wish I were a bird), Princess Resurrection (not a bad show, they just took all the violence out of a manga that used violence as a fucking plot point), Death Note, Mariaholic, School Days and Lucky Star.

[sub]If anything, I am being too lenient.[/sub]
Burning question: what anime do you enjoy?

I liked Elfen Lied, Higurashi, bits of Lucky Star and I'm growing to like One Piece as well.

Tell me, oh wise sage, what anime is worthy of your taste then?

I totally agree with you. Manga is better but so hard to come by, My wife started collecting Fruit's Basket. At $20 per book, 23 books = $460, and we're still missing book 21 cause it's not at my local store and last time I internet ordered a book it took 2 months and come water damaged. Yay.

Theres alot of anime which looks great on the cover, read great on the blurb and cost average but the whole thing could turn out to be shit. (Stupid and abrupt ending, whiney annoying and unlikable characters ect)

I also started this thread as opposed to recommend me anime as I thought the bad anime would be a smaller list. If an anime is truely bad, there won't be many fans of it and most people would agree that it was shit.

Yes, your list of bad anime seems to cover every genre. What would you recommend?

Well, the problem is that these things are subjective. I mean, I think Akira is sloppily paced, boring and an hour too long, I thought Neon Genesis Evangelion was eye-gougingly stupid and the ending was a slap in the face to everyone who sat through it all, and Ghost In The Shell was a good idea with just about the worst possible execution available. And these are all considered "classic" Anime by a lot of fans.

Everyone's got their favourites, but of course the good stuff is always going to be a smaller list, whatever anyone's taste. Only a cultural fanboy with rose-coloured glasses thinks there is more worthwhile exciting stuff than boring generic stuff, in any cultural entertainment/art product whether it be books, TV, movies, comic books, computer games, paintings, sculpture, etc etc.

I dunno why they'd name the show after one minor joke character.
Opinions vary, but 0/10? That's like Garzey's Wing level, I'm pretty sure you cannot have hated Cowboy Bebop that much, or if you did, why did you keep watching it?

You need to say why you hated whatever you hated. You can't just go. I hate "certain anime" with no reasons.

Anime that fulfills my incredibly specific and stringent demands.

That and Ghost in the Shell, Dennou Coil, Kino's Journey, Haibane Renmei, .hack//SIGN, Simoun, Paranoia Agent, Maria-sama ga Miteru, Aoi Hana, Moyashimon, Mushishi, K-ON!, Azumanga Daioh, Aria, Cowboy Bebop, Galaxy Angel, Kashimashi, Wandering Son, Serial Experiments Lain, Boogiepop Phantom and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. There, that's one more than I mentioned I didn't enjoy.

Really, though, it's like asking what TV shows I've enjoyed or what movies I've enjoyed, there's way too many to list off the top of my head.

I'm not saying my preferences are somehow superior. My post just came off as being very aggressive since this thread is about things we wouldn't recommend. I listed 20, there's a lot left.
