Whats funny, is that very few people here seem to understand that everyone's tastes are different.
Like standard TV/Movies, there are a plethora of genras within anime, it is just using a different medium.

You will rarely, if ever find a singular show that is universally hated, or even one that is universally liked.

[Edit: Apparently I cannot spell today]

Also, what I think of it, before anyone thinks of calling me out on it.
Anime is not a genra, it never has, and never will.
Calling it so is nothing more than an uneducated stereotype. =3

Burning question: what anime do you enjoy?
Anime that fulfills my incredibly specific and stringent demands.

That and Ghost in the Shell, Dennou Coil, Kino's Journey, Haibane Renmei, .hack//SIGN, Simoun, Paranoia Agent, Maria-sama ga Miteru, Aoi Hana, Moyashimon, Mushishi, K-ON!, Azumanga Daioh, Aria, Cowboy Bebop, Galaxy Angel, Kashimashi, Wandering Son, Serial Experiments Lain, Boogiepop Phantom and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. There, that's one more than I mentioned I didn't enjoy.

Really, though, it's like asking what TV shows I've enjoyed or what movies I've enjoyed, there's way too many to list off the top of my head.

I'm not saying my preferences are somehow superior. My post just came off as being very aggressive since this thread is about things we wouldn't recommend. I listed 20, there's a lot left.
I don't think you mentioned it specifically, but I have a feeling that you are not a big fan of Haruhi Suzumiya.

Actually, I liked Haruhi a lot (although Endless Eight was.. well, you know).

Some or most of Higurashi, Death Note and Lucky Star was good too, but there were just enough irritating parts to keep me from recommending them.

I just abhor the formula that a lot of romantic comedy series use [small](or worse, harem series)[/small]. There can still be a good show in there, but it has to do a lot more to win me over. Haruhi doesn't fully conform to the formula I mentioned, and it would still be strange and self-aware enough to be enjoyable even if it did.

I'm getting the feeling I should stay away from: Dragon Ball Z, Naruto, One Piece and Bleach because they go forever. I think One Piece is up to 500 episodes?
:O Don't ditch the DBZ! Sure it's ridiculous, but it is EPIC ridiculous. Can't hate dragonball Z!
And Bleach is pretty good if you skip fillers or read the manga.

But yeah Naruto and One Piece I wouldn't recommend.

Cowboy Bebop was awful, 0/10.
I dunno why they'd name the show after one minor joke character.
1. Why did you hate it?

2. What the hell are you talking about? They're bounty hunters, bounty hunters can also be called cowboys. Their ship is called the Bebop. Therefore, Cowboy Bebop.

As a general rule, when the plot synopsis is " is an ordinary year old <MAN/BOY> attending when one day, a appears from and may or may not demand to . Wacky hijinks ensue!" then don't bother.

The same applies if "NOW HE HAS TO USE HIS TO PROTECT <i don't even care anymore>" is in there somewhere.

Also fuck Elfen Lied, Gantz, Gunslinger Girl, Panty/Stocking, ALL Shonen Jump anime (Naruto, One Piece, Gintama, Bleach), Neon Genesis Evangelion, Higurashi (sorry, guys), Umineko (less sorry, guys), ALL Type-moon stuff (Fate/Stay go fuck yourself, Lunar Legend shut the fuck up), ALL Key stuff (Clannad, Kanon, I wish I were a bird), Princess Resurrection (not a bad show, they just took all the violence out of a manga that used violence as a fucking plot point), Death Note, Mariaholic, School Days and Lucky Star.

[sub]If anything, I am being too lenient.[/sub]
Why Gunslinger Girl? I understand why the rest of the list should be avoided, but Gunslinger Girl?

Except if it's because of the second season. Its first episode made me puke and I couldn't force myself to watch anymore of it.

The finale has yet to have surfaced, but I'm calling it already, Puella Magi Madoka Magica is best of season. Pulls off deconstruction just about perfectly.

Unlike Evangelion...seriously, I watched it and the two original movies, but I can't say it was actually good. Took the symbolism and 'artsiness' way too far and what you end up getting is a convoluted mess, in which you can TRY to see all sorts of things, but it just simply doesn't make sense, from any possible angle. For a deconstruction, they hauled 'burning blood' characters into the other end and you're basically stuck with the most impossibly terrible psychos in existance. NERV abolished psychological evaluation, I guess.

I have finished Clannad, twice now, now im just getting the DVDs

but does anyone kno if there are any other good romances like clannad?
If you're looking for "like Clannad," you can't get much closer than Air and Kanon. Both are made by the same people that made Clannad, and based on visual novels made by the same people that made the visual novel on which the Clannad anime was based. So they're as close as you get. Air is okay, but near the end it entirely stops making sense, and its ending isn't as fulfilling as Clannad or Kanon. Kanon, on the other hand, is almost as good as Clannad. Almost. Just make sure you see the 24-episode Kyoto series rather than the 13-episode Toei one.

I also recommend Bokura ga Ita. Very simple animation style, but an endearing romance that you won't soon forget. Only problem is the ending, which does not continue to the "many years later" part of the manga it's based on and thus is very open-ended. Good show nonetheless.
Thanks for that, gonna watch it now....

and thx to everyone else...
