My friends were recently able to break through my retarded close-mindedness and force some anime on me, starting with Ghost in the Shell and Jin-Roh. And holy shit, I'm an idiot for not watching those earlier.

So I burnt through everything Ghost in the Shell related, and then watched Texhnolyze after a recommendation, and now I'm looking for more, preferably somewhat similar to the others.

I have Serial Experiment Lain lined up, but I don't know if I want to watch it right away after watching Texhnolyze, as I think their from the producer, or something, and though I liked Texhnolyze it also crushed my soul. So, is SEL like that too?

I don't know what any of those animes are but I will say that regardless you should watch FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. The series just finished with 64 episodes, and it was the most amazing anime I have ever watched.

I do not know, but I have recommendations for you.

Cowboy Bebop

Did you think Firefly was the first Space-Opera/Western series? Well then you're wrong, because that is precisely what Cowboy Bebop is. And it came out during the 90s!

I'm running a bit short on time, so I can't give you much of a description, but know that it's one of the best sci-fi anime shows ever. It's also only 26 episodes, so it's a good start. Won't keep you occupied for too long and all.

Also, the majority of anime based on manga are incredibly inferior to their counterparts. So I recommend you keep away from those.

Okay, you've seen Ghost in the Shell...check. Okay, you now have roughly only 3 more shows to go and your done with all the good anime. Watch Black Lagoon, Cowboy Bebop and Paprika...maybe Mononoke and Spirited Away. Then your done! Congratulations, I've saved you so much time going through the 99.99% dribbling crap which is anime.

I highly recommend Death Note: one of the most intelligent thrillers you will ever see.

Full Metal Alchemist must be watched, as it is a brilliant steampunk fantasy with great action and absolutely amazing drama.

On the lesser-known end of the spectrum, I recommend Orphen as well (make sure it's the first season): it's not so well-known as either of these, but it's a fantastic fantasy that must be watched.

I also cannot recommend Clannad highly enough. This is an amazing romance/comedy/drama that will make you laugh plenty and cry A LOT. Seriously, I don't care how tough you are; you will cry. Guaranteed. And if you like it, I recommend Kanon, which is along the same lines.

And... well, it's not anime, but I cannot stress enough how much you need to watch Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's an American show, so not anime, but its animation is similarly styled in some ways. And the fact is, it's the greatest freaking thing you will ever see in your life. The first season's a bit juvenile (it is a kid's show, after all), but it rather quickly matures, and by season 2 it's on a consistent upscale of mature themes. It has fleshed out characters, an amazing story, great action, beautiful animation (especially later on), and... well, just about every good thing you could want in a show.

Anything from Hayao Miyazaki and Elfen Lied (If you have the stomach for it).

I hate anime, but those are my favorites.

You need to watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, and possibly Ergo Proxy or Elfen Lied.

I LOVE the OST for Elfen Lied. Such beautiful and heart-breaking music.

Any Hayao Miyazaki movies, Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Mobile Suit Gundam and all its variations are definitely worth watching. You will like some more than others. Shakugan No Shana for a cool action-ish show with a little slice of life humor in between.
