I fairly recently acquired a 3DS XL and after obtaining some of the games i knew I wanted (Listed below) I thought it would be good to find what other people enjoyed. I figure this is a great way for myself and others to compile a list of games they should try. I never owned a DS so pretty much anything is on the table here.

Games I own are:
Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why'd You Steal Our Garbage?!
Contra 4
Final Fantasy III
Kid Icarus: Uprising
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
Kingdom Hearts Dream, Drop, Distance
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Megaman Zero Collection
New Super Mario Bros 2
Pokemon Black
Pokemon Black 2
The World Ends With You

So with that list in mind I am excited to see the great games you guys come up with.

I'm more of just Pokemon for DS, but how is that new Kid Icarus? and does the Zero Collection look good on it?

That Fire emblem game and Etrian odyssey 4 comes out in a month, I'm buying a 3ds just for them myself :)

As for the ds I suggest
Mario and Luigi Partners in time
Mario and Luigi Bowsers inside story
All the castlevania ds games
Dragon Quests 4-6

That's enough to keep you busy!

Kid Icarus is allot of fun but as most have said the controls aren't very good. If you can look beyond that then it is well worth playing in my opinion. Zero looks alright as far as I can tell. Its not amazing seeing as it is mostly just ports from the GBA but all in all it isn't bad.

I'll definitely give them a look. Fire Emblem has been on my list to get for a while. As for the rest, they seem like my kind of games (I've always enjoyed Castlevania)

Other than whats already been mentioned...

Super Mario 3D Land - the better of the mario platformers on handheld IMO

Fallblox/Crashmo (from the Eshop) - very fun and addicting puzzle game
+
Pullblox/Pushmo

Aliens Infestation - A metriodvania style 2D aliens game, if you are a fan of the series you'll probably find something to like here. I had a lot of fun with this one, but it can be frustrating at times.

Ace Attorney and Ghost Trick.
My two favourite portable games ever,I'm pretty surprised I'm the first one to mention them.

Ho boy... the list for the DS is quite long and I think people will eventually fill you in with the good stuff. As for the 3DS, the list is a lot shorter (obviously), so here we go:

Kid Icarus Uprising
A lot of people complained about the controls but really, I've never had any problems... if you try it for yourself, you're in for a really fun "God of War PG-rated edition". Colourful and fun art design, INCREDIBLE soundtrack... seriously, it's just mind-blowing arrangement after mind-blowing arrangement, really good voice acting and honestly the best 3D yet. Also, a really great online-multiplayer support with surprisingly in-depth combat and countless strategies. Must-have.

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance
If you're even mildly interested in KH, it's a) a great recap and b) fucking fun. Seriously, the flowmotion movement system is amazingly fun, the sounds and graphics are amazing and it has a great game feel to it. Yeah, the story is some sort of blob by now, not impenetrable, but weird and annoying at times.

Mario Kart 7
Yeah, it's really good. Aside from that, it's Mario Kart, probably heard of it before.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Yea, it's still good. I like it.

Resident Evil: Relevaitions (typo intended)
IMO the last atmospheric RE but that might be because of the slightly claustrophobic setting and the fact that I exclusively played it late at night with the lights of and under my blanket. Still, it's really nifty.

Final Fantasy Theatrhythm
I like FF music and I'm a sucker for rhythm games but I can see that this game has pretty much only niche-appeal.

On the eShop there are three games/apps that are really good:

Dillon's Rolling Western
Nintendo's stab at a tower defense game and it's fucking AWESOME. Tight controls, action-y input, nice western soundtrack (albeit a bit repetitive because it has fewer songs). Hours upon hours of fun.

Pushblox/Fallblox
great puzzle game with an extensive editor mode included. really getting your money's worth out of this.

Colors 3D
wonderful drawing app that let's you draw 3D pics. if you're artistically inclined, it's a really fun toy to scribble with. Has decent online support for posting your art works as well.

I missed a lot of games that are good (the entire plethora of mario games is decent enough for example, Tales of the Abyss, the new Professor Layton, Paper Mario, etc) but I chose to focus on the ones I really, really enjoyed.

Also with Fire Emblem Awakening coming out in a couple of months, I really got quite a few enjoyable hours out of the 3DS.

All of these look like fantastic games. It will be hard to decide which ones to get first. Though I do already have Pullblox/Pushmo I just didn't list it. Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone. If anyone has any more they would like to add go right ahead.

Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
Rune Factory
Kingdom Hearts recoded
and Lost Magic
These are my favorites that haven't been suggested yet but most of the game recommended in this thread so far are great games.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is also coming out in march and that looks to be quite awesome so keep an eye out for it.

Hell, yeah. Fire Emblem muthafucka!

Also, 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors for the DS and it's sequel Virtue's Last Rewardf for the 3DS. Have played through both and can vouch for their awesomeness.

Mario Kart DS. I recommend it over 7. Yes, 7 is serviceable and fun, but it's races tend to be closer and more fast paced and therefore, you lose a ton because of blue shells.

Theaterhythm Final Fantasy. It's fun music game with lots of great classic music. Lots of fun.

In that same vein, Elite beat agents for the DS. probably the best rhythm game I've played. Deserves more attention than it got. All the songs are covers, so YMMV. The "highway star" cover is bad, but the ending cover of "jumpin' jack flash" is better than the original.

I'm going to have to agree with some of the earlier posters on this topic. I'm more of a story/character driven person when it comes to handheld gaming, so my absolute favorites have been the Zero Escape series ("999", "Virtue's Last Reward"). A little bit of puzzling in between story segments, but largely built around a narrative.

Also, although it's more of an acquired taste, I really enjoyed "Hotel Dusk: Room 215" and its sequel "Last Window: The Secret of Cape West" (which you'll have to buy as an import if you live in North America). It's a more more somber, drier sense of plotting, but it has some innate charm to it just so long as you don't have to be enthralled by flashy graphics every second.

But if you're not that type, and you want a game bursting with exuberance, the Ace Attorney series should fit your bill.

Ghost trick
Ace Attorney series
Etrian Odyssey series
The Dark Spire
Kirby games maybe?
999
I like Lost in Blue, but you might want to look it up first.

Seems like you've got some great games already.

To your DS list, I'll add:

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen
Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation
Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Sky
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Final Fantasy: 4 Heroes of Light
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
Chrono Trigger

For your 3DS now:
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked (enhanced port of DeSu1 on the DS)
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward

For your 3DS soon:
Fire Emblem: Awakening
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner Soul Hackers

For your 3DS eventually:
Shin Megami Tensei IV

And much more, I'm sure.
