I wanna play something new but my financial situation at the moment means I cannot really afford to buy any new games (that and most of the shooters aren't really doing it for me). I was just wondering does anyone have a list of good mods for half life 2?
Preferably ones with shooty action (as opposed to mods like The Stanley Parable)

The Stanley Parable is easily the best HL2 mod ever.

OT: The hidden is very fun.(You need source 2007 kit that can be found under tools)

My favorite is Nightmare House and Nightmare House 2. The second one is really good and shooty. It is leagues better than the first, but playing the first will help the story of the second one make a little more sense.

It is also pretty scary if like don't like that kind of thing.

The Stanley Parable (this is a must)

Black Mesa (obviously)

That's all I can think of right now.

I'll third Black Mesa, it's really amazing.

Other than that, I'll say Minerva: Metastasis and Mission: Improbable. Both have the high quality level design of a typical Valve game. If you played HL2 + episodes and enjoyed them, these two mods are highly recommend. The Minerva mod is so highly regarded, that the main guy behind it got hired by Valve, after releasing the mod. It's that good.

I haven't completed Research & Development yet, but I hear good things about it, so it might be worth checking out as well.

1187 [http://www.moddb.com/mods/1187] is set between Half Life 1 and Half Life 2 and adds a few things like Iron Sights if you're into that, can turn extras off in options.

Doesn't overlap with Half Life characters, it's set in the residential areas and them starting to get swarmed by aliens and chaos.

Hi, I just came in to win this thread.
Okay, later guys.
Hilarious. The sounds for the mines and the charging tau cannon are IMO the stand-outs.

Anyway, Dear Esther is also available as a HL2 mod. Try The Stanley Parable first and if you enjoy that, you might like Dear Esther too. No guarantees though.

I second Stanley Parable. But i am not sure if the OP want a whole new experience that just HAPPENS to use the HL2 engine

I second Research and Development. Very fun game that doesn't give you any real guns.

I used to download a shitton of mods for HL1 & 2, Minerva is a great single player game, also The Hidden is a great multiplayer mod with recent spotlight thanks to TotalBiscuit.

Black Mesa and The Stanley Parable are a must, but beyond that, I recommend you to check out Moddb [http://www.moddb.com/games/half-life-2/mods] and even Steam [http://store.steampowered.com/mods/220/] itself for additional mods.

Oh you. Trying to end a thread too early.

Research & Development is rather fun and if you can find any servers still running Zombie Master is a good mod to try. Wish more people played Synergy these days though...

Yes yes yes yes yes. (And FYI, Nightmare House 2 comes with a somewhat redone edition of NH1 as a prologue.)

There's also RandomQuest if you like really strange humor, and Gstring if you like exceptionally long gameplay and loud J-pop (and hate capitalism). Give Blind Monk's Society a try, too.

Actually, I recommend holding off on the Stanley Parable, just because a HD version is coming out on steam. I recommend paying out for it, once its released.

Mission Improbable is great if you just want a cool series of levels within the Half Life 2 universe. Excellent level design, and quite a lot of imaginative content.

If you want something arty, try Radiator: Handle with Care. Interesting examination of relationships. You play a little guy inside a man's head, who's job is to repress memories. Failure to carefully handle the memories will result in the man blurting out his secrets and feelings. Quite funny and evocative.

Water is something completely different. An RPG/puzzle game about a mermaid goddess in an industrialised harbour city. Brilliant for its visual appeal and sheer vision.

No More Room in Hell is pretty fun, if you can find a friend to play with.
I love Neotokyo, but very few people actually play.
Goldeneye Source is also very awesome, and I'm sure there's a decent community left.
As for single player, Underhell and the original Dear Ester are interesting.

Now that I remember, I seriously enjoyed this mod, SMOD: Tactical [http://www.moddb.com/mods/smod-tactical], this mod is just mindless violence, it pits you in a single map (of a selection of many more maps) and you're thrown wave after wave of Combine soldiers, Manhacks, Dropships and other HL2 nasties, they have powerful weapons and so do you are given powerful weapons (even a PSP that launches UMD discs... I'm not kidding), it's kinda like Gears of War Horde mode, it also adds gibs to your enemies and gallons upon gallons of blood.

It's a fun and mindless little mod, definitely recommended.
