Nobody has mentioned it yet, so I will: Homeworld 2. It's actually a great game, very cinematic and tactical.

*Diablo/Diablo 2.
*Baldur's Gate/Baldur's Gate 2.
*Neverwinter Nights (if you can run it, it's fairly old, so maybe).
Those are all RPGs, not RTSs.
RTSRPGS, but I guess I was a little distracted ^.^

Age of Empires 2... It's a classic. Get it, it's so damn fucking cheap.
Already have a working copy. Borrowed a copy off a friend, and half of it was corrupted. Turns out air got into the disc (still don't know how), so I bought a copy for $4 at a bargain bin shop.

Most people have posted stuff that is quite computer straining, so I'll give some stuff that will work on anything.

Total Annihilation
Total Annihilation: Kingdoms
[small]Kingdoms is a fantasy type with dragons and whatnot whilst the original is sci-fi[/small]

Starcraft
Warcraft 3
[small]Same way round again for the fantasy/sci-fi.[/small]

Red Alert 2...
I haven't got a fantasy equivalent for that one.
For the fact you took into account my crappy latop I thank you.
I have WarCraft 3, just can't find the USB it's on :|

maybe a 4x game instead of RTS?

Sword of the stars is nice if you have A LOT of time.
Upgrade your laptop and have the best rts out there: Supreme Commander 1 (2 is a piece of dog poo)
Well, I believe that 4X games are on the way.
Also, welcome to The Escapist!

Company of Heroes: Excellent cover system, fully destructible environment, flying dismembered limbs whenever a shell hits infantry, and a good single player mission. Get it if you have a computer that's powerful enough.

World in Conflict: Russian invasion. Think of it as the single player mode in Modern Warfare 2 except it's in Real Time Tactical form, set on the West Coast, in alternate timeline 1989, and you get to use chemical weapons and napalm.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 is fun, as is the expansion (though they both get better with mods).

If you're looking for something "off the beaten track", so to speak, try Cultures 2: The Gates of Asgard. It's a blend of The Settlers and The Sims, and it is great fun.

Now, I'll get this out of the way first: If this should be in the Off-Topic Discussion forum, then I'll ry and get it moved.

Now, onto the topic at hand.
I've been looking for a good RTS game, not necessarily with a storyline, that has a fair bit of content, and isn't graphics heavy.

Stuff by Gas Powered Games is out because my laptop (EEEPC) has absolutely no chance in Hell of running their games. Trust me, I've tried.

I've got WarCraft and AoEII, and am looking for Command & Conquer.
Any other good ones I've missed?
you're in luck my friend, i'm an rts obsessive and i own an eeepc so it is possible!

first step is probably to upgrade to the 2 gig ram, it lets you set more aside for graphics use.

sins of a solar empire will run but playing it on a tiny screen is a pain, dawn of war 1 runs alright on mine but my favourite strategy game to play is defcon. in fact a small screen is going to be your biggest enemy when finding a playable game. pick something like red alert 1, 2 or starcraft with big friendly sprites rather than something you have to squint to see. warcraft 2 or starcraft are good picks because the action is at quite short ranges, you should be able to fit a battle on the screen.

i'll say this for the atom processor though, it's surprisingly competent.
Well, my brother 'owns' the EEE (he never uses it, so it's now technically mine) and refuses to upgrade the RAM in it, so getting 2GB is out of the running.
Small screen = pain, but I can live with that. I used to play CrossFire, and when the match started up, it switched from 1024x600 to 1024x768, so it was stretched to hell until I switched it back, but not really a pain. Not sure if Gas Powered Games products will run, because I got a demo version of Demigod, an AoM/DotA crossover-type game, which refused to run at all, because of my video card apparently not being awesome enough to cope.
I heard that Sins is a ***** to get running well on a EEE, so that might be out. have WarCraft 3 and that runs well, so I guess that StarCraft should. I'm just finishing installing WH40K: Dawn of War, hoping it works :p

Thanks for the info and tips, hopefully I can get said brother to upgrade RAM in laptop.

Dawn of war 1 and its first expansions both have good story campaigns. Its second and third expansion only add new armies/units and a campaign more in touch with the Risk board game. If you're interested in that, just upgrade with all expansions, play the first one, the second one and then the fourth as the third and fourth expansion campaigns are pretty much the same thing, only the later has more armies and units.

As for graphics, theyre nice and you can set up alot of it to make it run on a lower end machine.

DoW 2 on the other hand is more like your C&C Generals or Commandos style game. Less about building a base and making a load of tanks and driving from point A to B with enemy C in between, and more about, you have 3 squads and if they all die you lose.

Starcraft and its expansion will keep you going for a while.

Not graphics heavy? Cossacks, the original and its expansions. They are awesome games and still look good without being demanding. Great combination of base building and strategy with loads of nations, units etc set in the 17th and 18th centuries. Yeah its awesome, also unlimited unit cap.

I'm not going to suggest a specific game but whatever you do get make sure it has a really good modding community, Medieval 2 Total war was made much better for me when I saw the Third Age Mod.

I've developed an affiliation towards abandonware games, just google abandonware and goto the strategy section of any of the sites, total annihilation is one I'm currently hooked on

Medieval 2: Total War. Then get the Kingdoms Expansion. Then get the Stainless Steel Mod. Then get the Real Recruitment/Real Combat submod. A lot of work, but I guarantee that you will enjoy every minute of it. It's slightly more complex than ME:2, but makes up for it by being infinitely more rewarding.

Starcraft I has been recommended a good number of times, and I second that recommendation. It's awesome.

Rome: Total War is another good one. However, if you do get it, remember to download either the Rome: Total Realism or the Europa Baraborum modifications.* The Barbarian Invasion expansion is also very nice indeed, but under no circumstances should you buy the Alexander expansion, which is a colossal rip off.

Mechcommander and Mechcommander 2 are both excellent games, and both abandonware games available for absolutely free.

Company of Heroes is splendidly good fun, as is the expansion Opposing Fronts.

Dawn of War I is good. Dawn of War II is just plain amazing.

*Playing a Total War game without a mod is heresy. Everyone should have downloaded at least one for their game. Also, don't buy Empire or Napoleon, both of these are buggy, broken messes that aren't really worth the effort.

well seeing as everyone seems to be saying the same games, im gonna recommend something different XD Lord of the rings, battle for middle earth 2, its a very good game :p plus you can make your own hero (Y) dont know if it will run on your laptop, but my mate had quite an old and useless laptop, without a graphics card and barely any memory and it ran ok with the graphics all on low :)
