Hmm, there's a lot of good stuff here but I'll see if I can add anything new...

Been listening to Paradise Lost on the weekend, not sure if it's something you'd like, they are fairly depressing, by I love them anyway.
Well I'd hope they would be depressing "Paradise Lost" is an epic about Satan getting thrown out of heaven. I can't imagine if you name your band after that you would be all smiles.

On topic call me predictable I am going to suggest an Iron Maiden song. The Man who would be king to be specific.

Or considering we where just talking about epics here's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner"

almost anything by lacuna coil. not all are metal songs and heaven's a lie is nowhere near their best work but it's well worth a listen. Kind of a mix of metal with arabic/egyptian sounding tones

The Black Dahlia Murder, Protest the Hero, Veil of Maya, Gojira, Mastodon, Between the Buried and Me, Carnifex, Despised Icon, Tool. I could go on and on.

But what if he does not like super-long opuses? If not, he should check out
Aces High:
Wasted Years:
Or Run to the Hills:
For something a bit more approachable.

OT: Let's get some classics in here. Can't go wrong with the aforementioned Maiden, but there are plenty of other good ones to check out too:

Breaking Benjamin is probably my favorite band in all of music, not just metal. They have a pretty diverse sound.

Dpending on what you like, I'll put in a few but I guess they've all been done already.
I'll warn you, some this might go a bit to the softer metal so if you like harder metal then prepare to get sleepy, but this is the kind of music I enjoy.

Alsestorm and Tyr are pretty damn sweet, Pirate and Viking metal respectively.

Seeing as I noticed a mention of Immortal earlier in the thread, figured I should chime in with this:

No, that's not a typo, and yes, it's a pain when attempting to Google (tip: album name is Between Two Worlds, easier to search that). Warriors is the track that got me hooked with its almost methodical slowness, rest of the album is pretty awesome as well.

I'm fond of Tool (as much progressive as metal, but worth a look). Other than that, I'd have to direct you to some old-school metal bands: Iron Maiden (you can hear some punk influences), Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Motorhead (not my brand of vodka, but metal to the core)...maybe look at early Metallica and Megadeth.

Lots of good stuff out there, but Maiden is the place to start, IMHO.

I love how I can recommend Devin Townsend for basically any genre of music.
Phew, I was a little worried when reading this thread and the lack of Devin Townsend as a referral, good choice, as an aside I never really did get into his SYL stuff, the rest I can recommend heartily, especially his Ziltoid The Omniscient album.

No Rhapsody of Fire? I am disappointed. An Epic High Fantasy story told through a metal band, orchestra and choir. Did I mention Christopher Lee sings?

You could try the two bands my username consists of, if Pagan black metal gives you any enjoyment. I'd recommend Bathory's Hammerheart and Graveland's Creed of Iron as essential albums.

It really depends on what genres you're into. Metal is incredibly diverse with almost countless different sub-genres and styles, so it'd help if you'd list down some of the shit you're interested in.
