Okay, I gotta admit, I was completely looking forward to this game. Destroying stuff was always something I wanted to do in a game, and after finding Mercenaries 2 and Battlefield Bad Company were a bit disappointing in way of destruction, I thought Red Faction Guerilla would completely revolutionize smashing stuff up. And to be truthful, it did. I thought the destruction in this game would never get tiring, but unfortunately, it does. And more quickly than you'd expect.
GRAPHICS:
It doesn't introduce anything new in this department, but the graphics are good. Nothing more that that. I wish it had a few more colors, and brown and orange does get old after a while. Character models are average, and the vehicles, while they often look cool, don't look fantastic. Fortunately, the explosions are great, and when a building comes down, you'll be able to see just about every piece of it on the ground, like a big, muddled up jigsaw. Yes, the destruction is the highlight of the graphics, and there's really nothing else here that will make your eyeballs pop out of your sockets. GRAPHICS- 7/10
STORY: I shouldn't really bother mentioning the story, as it barely exists in Red Faction Guerilla. But it is actually there. As you probably know, main character Alec Mason comes to Mars in search of work, but finds that the EDF, (the guys in charge) are treating the people there pretty poorly. After a tutorial, his brother is shot down by the EDF, so Alec decides he needs to take revenge on them, blah blah, introduced to some instantly forgettable characters, blah blah, joins the Red Faction, blah blah, blow stuff up.
Yes, the story decides to stop after the first ten minutes, and pretty much nothing else happens after the first cutscene in terms of a story. I'm not joking about the forgettable characters, you won't be able to remember any of their names a few weeks after playing this game. When some of them die, you won't care, and the game ends exactly how you'd expect it to, and of course it leaves itself open for a potential sequel (what game doesn't these days?)
The one good point is that it takes itself seriously. Previous games based on destruction have always had silly stories, with "comedic" dialogue and over-the-top characters, games such as the previously mentioned Mercenaries 2 and Battlefield Bad Company. I feel that if they put more time into the story, it could've been great, but they didn't so... It leaves you disappointed. When I finished the campaign, I literally sighed and thought to myself: "Damn, I wish this game had a story to it." STORY- 4.5/10
GAMEPLAY: Ahh... The gameplay. It's what us gamers really care about, right? RIGHT? We can spare a crappy story and so-so graphics for great gameplay, right? RIGHT? Luckily, Red Faction Guerilla's won't disappoint, and its a blast, for a limited time. When you first play through the campaign, you'll be hooked, at least for a couple of days. Most of the missions are pretty decent, and surprisingly varied, and unless you tackle every single side mission, the whole thing won't get repetitive for a while. Thankfully, the weapon range is great, and there are some great vehicles, like the walkers which can plow through buildings with ease.
The campaign length is pretty decent, it took me about a week (15 hours) and I enjoyed just about the whole thing. Unfortunately, once you finish the campaign, the single player becomes a bit dull. There really isn't enough to do after the main story that'll keep you coming back.
For an open world game, the AI is fairly decent. They will at times kick your ass, mostly on the harder difficulties.
But the main gameplay mechanic is the destruction. The game virtually revolves around it, and blowing and smashing buildings to bits is a lot of fun, for around ten hours. Yes, you look at the gameplay videos, and you say to yourself: "WOW, doing that must never get old." (That's what I thought, at least.) But, sadly, it does. Faster than you think. The thing is, the buildings start to feel the same. They're never that large either, the highest ones about four stories tall. Not only are the buildings repetitive, there's also not enough. I know the developers were going for a deserted, barely inhabited area feel, but there could've been at least one largish urbanized area. I mean come on, there's even less buildings in this game than there were in Far Cry 2, and we all know how deserted Far Cry 2 often felt. Even worse, once a buildings down, it'll stay down. So savour the moment as it crumbles, you won't be able to do THAT again.
So as I said before, the gameplay is great, but let down by a few choices (empty areas, permanently destroyed buildings, not much variation with buildings.) GAMEPLAY- 8/10
MULTIPLAYER: Now, personally, I don't like 3rd person online shooters, they just don't appeal to me. I've never really enjoyed playing Gears Of War online, and I don't particularly like Red Faction online either. First off, the good stuff. There is a decent range of modes, such as team death-match, free-for-all, capture the flag, and a couple of interesting destruction-based team games. Most of the gameplay in the multiplayer carries over from the single player, minus the vehicles, which is a little disappointing when you think about how awesome mech on mech battles could be. But the multiplayer is built to last you a while, so if you like 3rd person online shooters, you'll like this.
Now, the not so good. Multiplayer just isn't good enough to hold your attention for more than a couple of days. I tried so hard to like it, but I couldn't bring myself to. Perhaps it was because I wasn't so good at it, but I wasn't good at COD4 when I started playing that but eventually got addicted to it. No, it's just a bit repetitive. A lot of times, the match you just played feels like the one you played before that. Matches never feel the right length, and I really can't think of a better way to say it, but the multiplayer's boring. The fact the game is fairly laggy doesn't help either.
If you like playing Gears Of War 1 or 2 online, then there is a chance you'll like Red Faction online. But the whole thing just didn't work for me. MULTIPLAYER: 6/10
Red faction Guerilla was a disappointment for me. I really wish it wasn't, but sadly I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. Gameplay is extremely fun for a short time, and other than that, there isn't much else here that will draw you in. That said, I strongly suggest that you RENT this game, as for around ten to fifteen hours it is a lot of fun. A LOT. If you like 3rd person online shooters, than I say you should go and buy this game, as you'll squeeze a lot more fun out of the online component than I did. All in all, a decent game, but nothing groundbreaking.
