A few days ago the entire Red Faction series came up for about 8 bucks on steam. I'd been meaning to give it a go so I bought it.

However, playing through the first is becoming a drag as the gameplay has aged quite badly, the story is bland, the objectives are glorified fetch/S&D quests, and so on.

So I would like to ask fans of the series which should I start on next, has Red Faction 2 aged well, or should I go straight to Guerrilla or Armageddon?
Also, is playing through the first two neccessary, or can I just look up a synopsis and know everything I need to know?
And are there any recurring characters from the first two that are present in the last two?

I'm currently up to:
Just killed the scientist guy who created the plague

Guerilla is the only one worth playing. Even then it's hardly stellar, but it has its moments.

The first one is old and shit. The second one is slightly less old and shit. Armageddon is relatively new and shit.

You don't need to know the plot of the previous games. They're disconnected and take place years apart. You'll miss a few references, but that's it.

Thanks. That'll save me a lot of time then.
Yeah, Zhukov pretty much hit the nail on the head. Guerrilla is really the only one that makes good use out of that "destructible environment" to where you can spend so much time defying physics and just going balls to the wall insane with your hammer. The world is also pretty large as well. Only thing that sucks is there is no online multiplayer or anything. Maybe one day someone will make a mod like how the Just Cause 2 PC version has.

... Are you sure about that? I recall playing that game online at some point in time. *checks wikipedia* Say's there is. Just standard multiplayer with destructible environments and the like. Or are you just saying now that they switched to Steamworks or whatever they lost multiplayer?

But yeah, others have said pretty much the truth. Armageddon isn't that bad. I bought the game and DLC in said sale and don't feel ripped. Since I paid like three dollars.

I liked the first and second games, but they really do have a 'you should have been there' feel to them at this point.

I'd say RF:G is the best of the 4 or 5 games out there.
RF:A isn't AS bad as people make it out to be, in many ways the combat is better, but going from 'GTA: On Mars' to 'Dead Space: Red Faction Underground Edition' was a pretty jarring change.

First one was cool for the terrain destruction, and the rest was mid tier linear action campaign. Second one just ditched the terrain stuff and everything else stayed as it was.
Guerrilla is again a mid tier action campaign, but it is open world and looks pretty. The destruction came back for select buildings.
Armageddon then went back on the open world and made it again a linear campaign, the destruction also took a step down and made it usable on even less buildings, but they did add more guns that make use of destruction.

Oh and if you can make yourself care for even part of any story in the series I applaud you, sifting through a ton of shit to find a handful of peanuts is not something many can pull off.

Have you started to hate Hendrix yet? Or am I just alone in thinking that guy keeps saying he's helping you but it feels like he's screwing with you the whole damn time?

Also no, RF2 is really not necessary at all as far as I recall. I don't remember much about that entry in the series myself, thats how bland it was.
Guerilla is the best of the series and I was so very much disappointed with Armageddon's linear-shift. Why ruin what made Guerilla awesome by taking away the freedom (to destroy)? I was so hoping for them to make the destruction a mix between the first few levels of RF1 where you could literally dig tunnels if you wanted and the building destruction of Guerilla but instead... instead we got Armageddon. WHY?

I reckon the first two are two of the FPS games ever made. They're very arcade-esque and I loved the settings and back-story.

I should have made myself more clear, my bad. I meant being able to go through the single player campaign hub world with multiple people like how the Just Cause 2 mod is. The amount of destruction that we could do... >:3

I've played 1 and Guerrilla, and Guerrilla is much better just because the whole point of the game is to blow everything up. 1 starts with the ability to do so, and it's really cool when you can. Unfortunately, only a fraction of the game lets you do so.

It's too bad, however, the Guerilla suffers from cartoonishly evil bad guys and the fact that all the other rebels are pretty useless. In fact, during the "dodge the artillery" mission, they're worse then useless because it feels like the other cars on YOUR SIDE are more interested in getting in your way and making you fail the mission over and over again then actually helping you in any way. This is not helped by that route you are forced to take being incredibly convoluted, arbitrary and stupid(It's very close to "Drive around in circles" on a map getting hit by artillery strikes).

It was so much that by the time I got to Eos, I stopped caring and didn't even bother finishing the game.

Unless you want to say that you've played them all, you can skip Red Faction 2. The first two Red Faction games really haven't aged well, but can still be fun to play if you can look past the terrible controls.

Co-op campaign would have made Guerilla Amazing, or at least more entertaining.

I personally found Red Faction 2 to be the best of the lot...odd I know.
Found the newer ones pretty lame, and 1 isn't as good as 2 clearly.
