Amazing how so few people get the picture.
*adopts the voice of David Attenborough*

Much like the majestic owl, the Indigo Dingo perches high above the forums, a sharp eye scanning the listed threads for a sufficient meal, keeping special attention for buzzwords like "Micro$oft", "Gears of War" and "Red Ring of Death".

*shrieking noise*

Ah yes, he's spotted one.

*cut to cute little RROD thread poking it's head out of the long grass and looking around nervously*

The Indigo Dingo swoops down for the kill, it's sharp talons will make short work of it's prey.

*noises of cute little RROD thread being ripped apart*

To some, this may seem a grizzly scene, but for the Indigo Dingo, this is the only way it can sustain itself. With the attack on this thread now over, which to some, it would possibly appear he really has no business posting on in the first place, he can continue to live for another three days without need of another prey item. And with it's meal now resting in it's gullet, the indigo Dingo departs and begins to search for a place to preen it's feathers and wait.

*ceases to adopt the voice of David Attenborough*

Because I felt like it.

The red ring of death is a bit of a shocker. At least you'll get the warranty extension thing though. I got a single red light once as opposed to three, which I did't get the three year waranty extension thing for, so I had to pay for my repairs.

Did you make sure the Red Ring wasn't caused by the power supply? If there's ever a surge, the power supply will go into a safe mode, and the Xbox will show 3 red lights if you try to turn it on while in that mode. I know, it happened to me. All I did was unplug it, and plug it back in.

Ah, the Red ring... I got that thing not too long ago

just mail it in to Microsoft, it'll be back in a few weeks... and better than it was when you first got it

sounds almost the same as the towel trick to me

it's probably only a temporary fix though so you might wana call them

Sorry, I just had to do it.

You are a person after my own heart. It's exactly what I did.

True, took me four replacements to figure that out, but still...
Considering Sony's backing out of the console market, and Nintendo's rather kid friendly gimmick based games that only really leaves you with the 360 for a comforting shoulder to lean on in the late hours at night, it's gentle hum filling the room as you boot it...

I mean, that is to say, it's the only console that offers a wide variety of titles to choose from and allows independent developers to produce games for.

Honestly I've had my 360 for almost three years now [albeit it is the Elite model and I did get the back of the unit fan that plugs into the power supply itself, not the one that take up a USB slot] and it hasn't died yet. And this is through four moves, and a deployment to Iraq where I first got it. So perhaps I just got a surprisingly sturdy model, or I just got what I paid for when I bought it to begin with. Other than two crashes ever, both that went away right after I restarted it, and both being almost a year apart and on two different games, I don't have any complaints about the Xbox 360. But if you don't like it you can go back to the Xbox or the PS2 [which was the former King of a Thousand Game Titles], or any of the other, older, cherished, but no longer produced for, consoles and enjoy one of them. You'd find in the long run every console has it's issues, not just the ones made by Microsoft.

So how do you stop the Red Ring of Death? You don't really. You pay for a decent console that's made decent, get the right kind of fan attachment for it, and take the best care for it you can. It'll fail sooner or later, as all things in this modern age are designed to do. But if you take good care of it, you'll still get plenty of miles out of it before then.

Check above - I'm not the first to post this form of snide remark, and I doubt I will be the last. If up to that point no-one had said anything remotely connected with suggesting that the RROD is a negative point to the 360, I would have said nothing. However, as others had done it, I assumed the general attitude was thus that it was appropriate.
I think you're taking it a bit too seriously.
Oh who am I kidding?
I meant all of it.
I really do think you're an owl.
You vile Strigiform you.

But I do sometimes wonder what draws you into even going into threads about xbox 360 in the first place. I don't go into threads about PS3 or PS3 games, there's most likely going to be nothing there that will interest me.

And since when do Dingos have feathers?
Um... Winged ones might. Maybe?

Since it fell under the Rule of Funny.

And your logic falls under the "well everyone else is jumping off the cliff..." sort of mentality that everyone else seems to like to do. What is wrong with people these days? Can we not have original thought? Just because other people are complaining about something it doesn't mean you can't give a counter point, or if you have nothing to add to the discussion that furthers it, keep quite until you do.

Have fun... seeing that ring is quite possibily one of the saddest experiences you can have as a gamer...
Not for me. I had my Xbox since November 2006, and it RROD'd on me in Janurary of this year. My emotional response would qualify as relief. Everyone I know that has an Xbox has had to replace it at least once (and in one case, 5 times). As the months wore on I just had to sit there and wonder when my console's ticket was going to be up. Every time I pressed the button that nagging little question was sitting the the back of my mind, and when it finally happened I had my answer. I have no explanation as to WHY my console lasted so long in spite of fairly heavy use, other than the fact that I did, from time to time, attempt to clean the dust from it.

I got my Red Ring during a party. I proceeded to shit bricks until I realized someone and tripped over the plug and caused the plug to detach from the adapter. It works fine...for now.

As I understand it, the current system is that if you call Microsoft about it, they will replace it on the spot for free including postage and handling, and will give you a free month of Live.

Wow, never would have expected relief. You must have gotten a good one for it to last as long as it did. I can see why you would feel relieved though, after all, who wants to ask themselves that every time they turn a console on?

All the snide remarks on the 360 are annoying. Why bother comment on the RROD anyway? MS will just fix it for you if you call customer support... This is clearly a thread for 360 users anyway, so just back off flamers.
Mine works fine, always has. Sorry to hear about the bad luck man. Hope you get that stuff all sorted out.

Its for the reason I said - its this idea of someone continuing to come back to something they genuinely know will fail, yet convince themselves that they will get lucky. Like All Blacks fans when they go up against Australia.
Oh I see, that's the way you're going to play is it?
Well it's a lucky for you that I care (and thus, know) so little about sports, or else I might possibly have some sort of sports based rebuttal ready.

I ended up getting two free months, since the tech people didn't repair mine properly and I had to send it back again within a week.
Two weeks worth of being unable to play wasn't really remedied by two months of exposure to the xbox live community though.

The only experience i've ever had of RROD was on christmass day. My Xbox literally just flashed the RROD as the power went out. Im not sure if this was just due to the power cut, or was actually RROD. Either way, i still have an Xbox.... Even if it does make a terrifying growl instead of a gentle hum...
