I've recently had the xbox out on the carpet standing upright, but even after 10 minutes of being on after all night to cool down i get the error.

Problem number 1.
Never have the console, or the power brick, on carpet. Bad bad news. The carpet just absorbs and keeps the heat. Plus it offers a chance for static electricity to build up, which will ruin the brick or your system.

Put it on hardwood or tile or something, not carpet.
If you don't have hardwood or a non-carpet surface, like I used to, then rest it on the box is came in. You don't have to stand it up, just get the console and the brick off the carpet.

Recently my X-Box has been giving me the red ring of death, but with only the first and third player lights coming on and turning red. I was wondering if anyone else ran into this problem, and what exactly it is.

My theory is its overheating and if thats the case should i try buying this,

Would it help any?

One Ring = Unknown connection problem
Two Rings = Overheating
Three Rings = Internal Failure (aka FUCK)
Four Rings = A/V cable not connected

And the 360 doesn't need an extra fan at all. Just make sure it's well vented.

I had that over Easter, exactly the same problem. Except Microsoft were extremely helpful on the phone (even though I was calling an American call centre it was still a free call), and I had probably the best customer service I've ever recieved from Microsoft (and I've called a lot of customer service helplines in the past...). Plus, they said it would take about 3-4 weeks to get my Xbox back when I sent it to Germany. Guess how long it took? 2 weeks. Less time than they estimated. Plus, I got a free month subscription of XBL Gold, so I really hate it when people bash M/S for stuff when I've had nothing but good experience with them...

I know. I have a mate of mine where the ring of death happened to him (He lives in England to) and he had to send his off to India to get it fixed.
