seriously australia is so fucking hardcore that even our plants are like "fire. yeah whatever"
not only is every second animal in australia out to kill you but the trees themselves do everything in their power to get set on fire and kill ppl

the only reason australia isn't burnt to the ground every year or 2 is because we constantly have ppl going out and safely burning areas to limit the risk
Except when the Greens get their way and stop it for environmental reasons.

I don't care what any Australian says about how "safe" their country is, I'm not going to believe them. Ever.

I'm just going to stay here in Vermont, where all I have to worry about is a bunch of snow and the occasional ice storm.
Oh, it's perfectly safe. Just so long as you don't go outside when it's 40+ degrees, walk around bare foot, interact with any of the wildlife, go to the 'outback', eat anything, drink anything, breathe...
Sit down without looking, use the toilet without checking, put your feet into shoes without checking, reach into or pick up boxes without checking, leave windows open (especially overnight), go swimming...

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with where I live right now.
To be fair we have reinforced screens here to prevent anything nasty from coming inside. It would kinda suck to be in the middle of this 40 degree heatwave and not be able to open the windows since I'm not fond of aircon. I do keep the one window without a screen closed however.

And checking shoes for spiders becomes a normal habit after the first close call.
C'mon, man... you just rationalized leaving your windows open.

Like, there are screens over the windows around here too, but that's just because I'd rather keep more flies and mosquitoes outside than inside, not because I need to keep out some spider with a seven inch legspan that can probably crawl under the little space between the bottom of my door and the floor anyway.

And I don't have to check my shoes before I put them on. I like that I don't have to check my shoes before I put them on. XD

Sorry to spoil the mystique, but tourists are more likely to die from exposure
Yes that's right folks, forget the deadly deadly wildlife and harsh unforgiving conditions, simply being exposed to Australia (or a strong source of Australian-ness) WILL kill you.
Hardly anyone gets taken by man-eating sharks [http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/journal/shark-attacks-in-australia-timeline.htm] either.

There is no little space between the bottom of the door and floor on any of my doors leading to the outside, but I live in a nice, safe lower middle-class house.

What are you people talking about?! Don't you see what I see? Obviously Mars has grown tired waiting for us to visit and decided to bring some of the party to us! Obviously Mars has chosen the fine people of Australia to be the first inhabitants.

In all seriousness that does look intimidating.

Heh, if you insist. That's nothing compared to our Fire Tornade from last year. No, seriously, I'm not joking. It actually happened. It's like a frickin' Charizard went on a rampage.

Fire tornadoes are an actual thing? Awesome. Though I am starting to wonder what deities Australia have pissed off.

Either way gee, no offence but you Austrilian can't catch a break. First there is that bushfire still going on and now this.
Yeah about those bushfires... So according to the Courier Mail the amount of land in Queensland, New South Wales and Tasmania that is currently affected by bushfires is equal to roughly half of Europe. It's a pretty hot summer this year.
Well, that is more or less what happens every year, though.
also want to add that a large portion of our plant life actually thrives and reproduces using fire

Eucalypt litter is coarse and decays slowly, ensuring that after several years there will be an abundant build-up to carry the next fire.
The bark of many species is flammable and loosely attached to the trees, making ideal firebrands to carry fire across natural barriers.
The green leaves contain highly flammable oils and resins that act as a catalyst to promote combustion before the leaves are fully dry.

TUH-WISTED FIRE STARTERS!
*WUHWEHEHEHEH*

Ahem.

OT: I'm hoping to move to Australia later in life once I'm a qualified nurse: Australia is giving priority to immigrants who specialise in keeping people alive.
I think that pretty much speaks for itself.

I didn't even know this was happening until I read this thread. That's how memorable it is.

The rest of the world is like "that's a two-hundred-foot-tall wall of sand!" and Australia is like "whatever"
No no! It should be 'whatever'! It should be 'Oh? Well, we've had bigger.' Show your Australian superiority to the rest of us worlders.
When you have to live with nature, you get used to her tricks.
Just like when Finland gets a snow storm and 1 meter of snow in a day, nothing stops. Busses are on time, shops are open, airports function (bit slower but they still work) schools are open (History of Finland has had only 1 canceled school day) Only trains are late, but they are always fucking late.

And when England gets 1cm of snow the whole society stops and all flight get canceled.

It think the reasons Australians get along with Finns so well is the fact we both know what nature can do, how to protect it and could give less.

This reminds me that I need to call my Aussie mate again and ask did she get sand in her vag yet. (Her joke... Uses it as an excuse why she is so angry all the time...)

Also...
Rest of us worlders, you do realize there are people who live with the tricks of Mother Nature all around the world. And are not crying about it... Specially when it can be predicted...

Word of advice - specialise in something before applying, preferably a graduate cert or dip in something because a Bachelors of Nursing degree by itself isn't gonna get you a job in a reasonable timeframe. If I remember correctly (and I may not after a few bourbons), Critical Care, Emergency Care and Aged care are the big 3 for finding work. General ward nurses are so common we export them.

Of course, you'd have an easier time emigrating if you were a qualified plumber (bit of a short fall of tradies here except for for mechanics).

If you want more info, PM me and I'll see what current info I can shake from people I know in the field.

I've found Finns and Aussies get on well because they can get absolutely shattered together without it turning into a dickwaving contest over various nationalist bullshit as long as both groups accept the other can suck piss (drink alcohol) like fiends. Some of my fondest lack-of-memories have been long nights out on the turps with Finns (because, like me, most Finns I've met treat drinking as a marathon rather than a sprint).

This reminds me that I need to call my Aussie mate again and ask did she get sand in her vag yet.
HAAAAAAAAAA...

You do know, right, that the most common cause of 'sand in the vag' is from rooting on the beach?

You did read the bit in which I stated it is HER joke. I don't do jokes like that.

Yeah it might be the alcohol... But... I don't do the "drinking marathon for 72 hours then Monday hangover at work." thing... I don't drink at all, but still... I say the respect and understanding the nature as a bonding because I don't want to believe people can make friendships based only on alcohol - I don't want to face the fact that people are so... stupid/lame/sad.

ah, the dust storms are fine as long as you don't have respiratory problems like asthma. We used to get them a fair bit in the town i was born in

nah, looks about right to me, they tend to hit quick and then vanish like a fart in the wind

according to the fire service, Kempseys bushfires are all still out of control

This is a list of all the fires happening at the moment in Australia that have come under the perview of the Rural Fire Service

Well, thank you very much indeed that's a rather lovely offer for you. That said, I was hoping to move to Australia after specialising in Emergency/Critical Care anyway so I should be okay in that sense. Unless Australia has a massive influx of Critical/Emergency Care nurses in the next few years, then I'm going to have to start the murders all over again.
