Because if you have friends who are posh, and friends who are common, and you are half way in between, you don't want to be seen as posh by the common people and as common by the posh people.
If you're pretentious maybe, personally whatever problem someone has with my manner of speaking is
their problem not mine. Maybe it's because I don't really have much of an accent of any kind, making my voice fairly innocuous but I haven't really had anyone say anything about my voice, though if they did I wouldn't care. Like I said,
they are the ones with the issue here.
