I remember the Tomb Raider "rape" one. Seemed to be largely on misinformation. A lot of people didn't seem to realise that scene in the trailer was the whole scene and that it is more of a first time killing someone as character development thing not the (rather annoying) raped as character development thing.
I remember when that controversy was going on, Far Cry 3 came out and everyone loved it. I thought,"Isn't this guy in a similar situation? Isn't he also in danger of being raped?" As best I can tell no one cared. I can only imagine it was either because he was a guy so they didn't care or because his island had better weather so they didn't care.
Reasonable answer: Brody was a much newer character and far less iconic than Lara.

Fun answer: Because everything our society once held dear has been warped and corrupted by Phyrexia Socially Justified Antics.
I still like the idea that since it was such a beautiful day in the game world that no one minded.

From what I remember it was sparked by dev foot in mouth drawing attention to it. A lot of time the things in these controversies are around everywhere anyway with no one noticing until one gets unlucky and then its all on. Although yeah it could have been partly a gender thing (there certainly are people who think rape is less serious when it is a guy) or an iconic character thing or just down to the way it was presented.

I hope me mentioning that isn't going to turn this into a rape discussion thread.

One particular shitstorm that I remember and wish that I couldn't is the Fake Gamer Girl fiasco. It's been talked about here, but one argument that I seem to remember kicking it off was "girls are pretending to be geeky to make themselves more appealing to gamers."

Seriously, how narcissistic was the person who made that argument.
I remember the comic writer who went off at "fake geek girls" and cosplayers taking his spotlight with this weird mix of thinking they're doing all this to try to seduce nerd guys while also being pissy that are rejecting their advances. Perhaps because...they aren't actually there to seduce you which is why they don't want your advances? Na, can't be.

Looking at your profile pic reminded me of one of the largest shitstorms I've seen on the internet.

Never saw a shitstorm on the internet quite so big up until that point. Until, of course, she who shall not be named came onto the scene. The amount of dirt that was kiced up by Bioware almost seems trivial compared to how much of a tussle she got the internet into.

Remember when we were all on the same side here? Us vs the big corporations that were the ones who were blamed for the gaming industry's current state, versus a bunch of internet boogymen? Shit sure changes quickly.

Yeah, that's pretty much my point. As big a deal as that was at the time, it was small potatoes in the end. Nobody got too out of hand, nobody got any rape threats (that I remember, anyway...), nobody had to cancel a public appearance because she was afraid for her freaking life. People mostly went with the peaceful protest thing, which is the furthest the internet should ever go, and we even got clever cupcakes out of it.

Now, apparently it doesn't count as a controversy if people aren't doxing each other for disagreeing with them. It's like, no one thinks they will be taken seriously unless they are a literal, physical threat. And this is all over differences of opinion. What has happened in the last calendar year is despicable.
Well, it's not like death threats 'n the like didn't happen before. Jack Tommy got plenty back when he was still relevent, and I'm sure the whole team at Bioware got a big pile of the internet's "love" when were in the spotlight. When she came onto the scene it just seems to ignite something in people who already had no problem with death threats before, so it became more prominent.

At least now we know that there's a problem, instead of having the problem hide in the woodworks of the internet.

OH! And the "I'm not gay I just suck off Pre-op Transvestites" was another Escapist only affair. Still puts a smile onto my face. Those wacky Transvestites, when will they learn?
It was transsexuals, not transvestites, but yeah, that one was a doozy. People getting pissed to the point where Yahtzee had to change a joke, which by the way wasn't even that offensive by his standards, in his video was quite extraordinary. I still think it might have been some sleeper agent of 4chan or Tumblr who saw the opportunity to raise hell and succeeded.

Seconding Derpy Hooves...the bronies had been blathering on about their love for all, and seemingly half of them dropped that very quickly when Depry became Ditzy.

It probably won't turn into that. At it's heart I found it truly absurd that two games with similar ideas and advertising would have two utterly different reactions. I didn't think it spoke ill of the games makers. The more rabid fans on the other hand...

How about I try predicting a future controversy? When Half Life 3 finally comes out, cause at some point it probably will, how will the fans react when the long ago dissed Duke Nukem fan boys lay into them if the game is anything but perfect? I doubt that HL3 is being worked on right now, at least seriously, so when it comes it'll probably be a rush job. So it may have similar problems of, "But, but this isn't what I fantasized about!" A what a gloriously nontroversial flame war that could be!

Given that there was at least one person who (claimed) to come from Tumblr and complained about the video it wouldn't surprise me. I revisited that video the other day and it just doesn't feel the same =/

I just loved reading that thread so much. The episode on that-which-should-not-be-named of The Jimquisition was amazing as well.

I still remember the "X and Y Are in a Whirlpool" craze from 2011-2012. Those were hilarious to me.

"Your Dog and your Girlfriend are in a Whirlpool, and you can only save one."

"Winston Churchill and FDR are in a Whirlpool and you can only save one."

"This Thread and the one right below it are in a Whirlpool", you get it.

I wonder if the time is right to start a new one of these games? Or maybe not, considering it got so bad I think one of the Mods made a thread that said "Anyone make a new one of these will be Perma-banned".

I don't have a memory of that, but we recently had a similar tidal wave of "Would you date X?" kind of threads. Not that they could really be called controversies or flamewars, since it was just collective jumping on the silliness bandwagon.

I remember all the friendzone threads, ah those were the days.
One thing about them that did bug me was when people defended the angry friendzoned dudes saying they didn't just want sex with a girl who just wanted to be friends- they wanted love and a relationship from the girl who just wanted to be friends. I never understood how that was inherently better.
Ninja'd on that one. I remember all the friendzone and "nice guy" threads, those were always entertaining and interesting.

Sort of related, I remember one thread where a guy (I assume it was a guy) was asking why there is a stigma against being a male virgin. It all started out fairly mundane, with lots of guys in their mid-20s claiming they were virgins and it was totally by choice, and then someone jumped in and basically said "you guys are full of shit". And then the thread exploded. Good times.

Second the "Tomb Raider rape controversy", which was so mind-boggling because it was a rape controversy with no rape.

And, of course, "White Guy Defense Force". That's really all I have to say about that one.

It's not a single controversy but a long "war" if you could call it that, but, I miss the days when game culture was united against the alarmist groups and politicians who treated us like they did comic books and Rock and Roll, as a threat. So there was no time for in fighting as the discussion was all focused toward recognition as art, and the only dissent was the misconception that games being art meant they all had to drop and shift from what they were and become all high concept and important, rather than a legal free speech protection.

Well, there was EternalNothingness and his freaking out over that Dragon Ball Z homage in FIM. Those were certainly interesting.

Oh, and Sung-Kwan's temper tantrum was a more recent one.

For some reason I tend to remember controversial posters better than controversial topics.

Not a controversy, but i still fondly remember when not too long ago everyone was spilling their masturbation habits. I got more than a few dick jokes from that thread

Am I the only one who remembers all the "Am I the Only One Who..." threads?
I remember the replies those threads started to get. Those were...fun.

OT: Only two come to mind as the rest have been said. The years "Forum celebrities" was a gross, icky thing and the shit storm when the Pub Club was introduced.

Oh, and maybe the "Nicest User awards" thingy we tried out.

No.
Just no.

Sure, just because you flipped out when you didn't win and killed off the entire class of '11. You never should have called my grandmother a ****. That's what took you out of the running!
Hey.
Hey.
Hey.

I left one alive.
Barely.
I mean, he still had his arm...up to the elbow.

And to be fair, your grandmother called me a **** waaaaaaaaaaay before I called her one.
