And Hitler left a few Jews alive. I guess you guys can share the award. #Godwin
Like I'd share the award with a poser.
If I need to go out and violently murder more people while singing along to "Singing in the Rain", I will.
Oooooh, this is awkward. She actually said "I want you in my ****" Welp, no sense in crying over spilled lubricant milk. Just give me a handy over in the corner and we'll call it even!
...
Alright, you've got a deal.

The Mass Effect 3 ending, ye gods. That got a lot of people really, really angry.

But you know what I really miss? Console wars. It just seems like console wars just don't happen as much anymore than they used to. For example, I remember when IGN would post sales figures from the big retailers every Friday and all hell would break loose between fanboys of every possible alignment. Maybe it's because I ended up getting into PC gaming and stopped following console-specific news as closely, or maybe just due to a bit of added maturity on my part causing me to not care so much about what other people think of which machine I use to play video games both adding into me just not noticing it, but I really feel like we've gone too long without a good console war.

And I think what I really miss is that it was ultimately harmless. There were no connections to real-world politics, the opinions that would be influenced by console wars weren't anything that could influence how one might vote in the real world or go about their daily lives, while it could become hostile and needlessly inflammatory it never became at all toxic. Nowadays we've got all this talk of political correctness and social justice and feminists, and that's all going to have some weight when it goes back to the real world. No one's going to take "Nintendo is ruining gaming" back out into the world and use that to make a decision about anything important, some of the stuff that's come up tangential to more recent controversies, on the other hand, very well might.

I also miss the days of loons like Jack Thompson and Leland Yee when the gaming community could have something to actually be united against. Whatever opinion you could possibly have on feminism or whatever else we're arguing about these days, I think we could all agree that Jack Thompson was a fucking idiot.

And, of course, "White Guy Defense Force". That's really all I have to say about that one.
The bans. Soooo many bans.

September 13, 2013. Never forget.

for me it was the starcraft 2 hate threads that popped up right after the game came out and dealing with zeel the almighty pain in the ass, you know I think his blog is still being updated.........that scares me actually.

other then that the ME3 ending being blown way out of proportion (not that people didn't have a right to be upset) I mean seriously 15 mins of bad story doesn't discredit hours of gameplay nor is it comparable to killing your dog for the amount of outrage it caused.

you know what I think you guys who posted earlier were right that all seems really stupid now.

Oh, don't get me started on your hogties! So nice and tight...

...this isn't what was meant by igniting old flames, is it?
I don't think so.
But our love for each other did cause controversy, so it works in that regard.

I've been on The Escapist for over 6 years now, and no doubt anyone who's been here that long on at least some kind of basis has seen their fair share of flamewars, controversies and other forum blowouts over what are ultimately silly and trivial things.
Hey, do you by chance remember the 'Is Glass A Solid Or A Liquid' thread? It was a long, long time ago, but it was funny as all hell.

EDIT: Never mind; I looked it up, and It was so long ago that when you quoted someone, it wasn't linked. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.60289-Things-you-did-not-know?page=1].

...I miss Anarchemitis. He was fun...

Not a controversy, but i still fondly remember when not too long ago everyone was spilling their masturbation habits. I got more than a few dick jokes from that thread
Oh yeah, the masturbation thing seems to pop up every couple of months. We also had a ton of threads about stuff like peeing in the shower and how often you take a dump. Ah The Escapist, home of such riveting and sophisticated discussions.

I wish I remembered the names of all the infamous posters mentioned in this thread like Zeel and EternalNothingness (well I do remember Sung-Hwan but only because that was so recently). It'd be fun to go back to those times when anytime they posted a new thread you'd be more flabbergasted each time.

trust me you don't want to remember zeel he was a bit unbalanced and kind of an ass. Funnily enough though the public blog he did got me an A in psychology when I showed it to my collage class and deconstructed it with my teacher.

Oh god, please say you have a link to that blog. Zeel popped up at the tail end of a brief period where I was too busy to post. So when I came back he was still flooding the forums with threads about how Bioware were worse than Hitler and Nestle combined and everyone else was already familiar with him while to me he was still new and magical.
just look up zeels empire and youll find it but be warned that rabbit hole is quite deep.

There was the first great rule change outcry. The change to the rules and the introduction of the healthbar didn't go quietly. Then there was the good old Extra Credits debacle, ME3 of course and the days when Bronies flooded the forums.

Out of all the controversies of the past though, I'd have all of them happen again all at once right now if it meant GamerGate could have never happened.\

Edit: Oh and Game Dogs. Can't forget about Game Dogs.

Oh god I remember that now. That was a shitstorm I don't think I want to live through again.

Anyways, I see some people posting old users, so I also nominate (and am hopefully not the only one to remember) the controversy and moderation that seemed to eternally follow around MaxTheReaper.

Australia has banned GTA 5! Australia has banned GTA 5! Them SJWs are banning our games!

I know, I know, rather recent, but it still earned its status as a storm in a teacup.

Well, lemme see...
Back when I was new there was no religion and politics forum so there would always be a long running christian bashing thread around. Eggo was antagonising everyone who couldn't afford the super best of pc gaming hardware and RichardGroovyPants was antagonising everyone he could (still does on GG sites now I think)
Then there was the cullings of the new site layout where a lot of the old community wrote long ranting posts about the site and its new focus and got themselves banned.
Then there was a lot of 'ask a christian/jew/guy/girl/gay/straight/dog/cat' threads where people got attention for whatever reason they needed it.
Of course every couple of months there would be a sexism thread, a sex thread and a few trolls and bots that people would feed and poke for no good reason...
Oh and of couse Australia banning everything every so often, and American politicians blaming games for everything.
