Religion can certainly be an inflammatory subject. So of course it should be explored in video games. I can totally see Samson as a Kratos-esque figure, laying waste to his enemies with a hugely exaggerated jawbone. That's just one example off the top of my head.
The way I see it, anything that can open a dialogue or let us see how others define and explore their faith is a good thing.

Personally I have no problem with religious undertones and subtle messages in video games, Such as Fallout 3`s reference to Revelations 22:1, or 22:17, at the moment I cant remember which, but they both mention the river of the waters of life.
21:6 (or 2:16). Trust me, I've punched 2-1-6 into the keypad so often those numbers are burnt into my mind... :p

OT - If Resident Evil 5 taught us anything, it's that someone will always be offended by what you do, so it's probably best to ignore the fringe loonies and focus on making a good game.

It's their game so they should be allowed to do anything they wanted to as long as they don't use illeagal or psychological propaganda to affect the subcounciense (I don't know how that word is written in english)as a mean to convert people to their religion.
But I don't think anyone has ever done something like that. In some games religious undertones are necesary. Those you find in Dante's Inferno more or less is the only thing that binds the game to a The Divine Comedy.

We have to shoot BLACK zombies? In AFRICA? How could you?

OT: Christian here, religion in games is fine with me. I would definitely be unnerved by needing to kill someone like a priest, and there is no way I'm touching Bayonetta. As long as it isn't saying that a certain religion is right/wrong I'm okay with it.

(To anyone who is curious, I'm not a crazy, and I don't find spilling a few red pixels in a game, nor do I mind a few representations of major cities being blown apart. I do have a problem with real world violence though, just don't see the point when an agreement could be made.)

P.S: It was 21: 6. " Revelation Twenty-one, six." in a slightly English voice is forever ingrained in my mind.

People can develop whatever games they like. If I'm not comfortable with the religious undertones I just don't play the game. Simple as that.

Video games are art, so religion isn't off limits at all. It's all opinions anyway.

You don't believe in the evolutionary theory? Holy shit. Read some books and articles on the matter. From a logical standpoint it makes perfect sense. I suppose to religious people, logic is dumb as shit.
I've read a lot about evolution, as a Christian and yes evolution is certainly a reality. BUT for, say, an ear to grow you'd need more than 1 mutation. There are millions of cells that make up an ear and every stinkin' one of those would have to mutate at the same time, or along a set of time to coincide with all the other ones that have mutated. I'm not even going to attempt to put odds on that.

Also, considering that human society and the human mind has outgrown any notion of survival of the fittest, then we've halted our own evolution. Evolution is largely based around the best thing at surviving breeding more widely than the rest but human beings choose our mate on personality much more than strength or speed or survivability. The question has got to be at what exact point did we stop this(if evolution were true)? That would be the exact point that our minds matured yes? So explain how the body is so far in advance in terms of evolution? Another coincidence that the mind became aware the moment the body was free of on-going mutation?

I digress, there's nothing wrong with believing in the theory of evolution. There IS something wrong with calling people who don't "dumb". Especially with such a retarded generalisation.

As long as they don't throw it in my face and say "YOU SHOULD BE THIS RELIGION OR YOU'RE GOING TO HELL!!!!ELEVEN!!" Then I'm fine.

On a related note, I loved the 'Jesus loves me' rhyme from Bioshock. I wish they had kept it in the second...
It isn't 'from', Bioshock (don't know how to embed, sorry)

OT it doesn't matter to me tbh because - ''Unless their opinion affects your opinion, their opinion matters not at all.''!

I think developers should be able to put religion in their games, yes.

And I think I should be able to really, really, really not like it if they do. I don't like religion. But hey, the fictional fantasy world of a game is probably a pretty good place to explore the fictional fantasy world of religion.

I didn't like how in Dragon Age: Origins, I couldn't play a human who openly renounced the maker. That was just one little thing that bugged me...
You can defile the remains of their jesus equivalent though, if that's not renouncing the maker I don't know what is.

I'm a staunch atheist but it can be hard to get into a game if the characters DON'T have religion. Realistic, well-written characters have human attributes like hopes, dreams, backstory and-sometimes- Religion. It adds more depth to the character.

Its so silly how quick people can be to get offended by such dumb things these days.

I dont like religions that exist today and are used steryotypically. But fake religions (like Lambs) are fine in my book.

Ugh... That's a horrible song... I prefer it within Bioshocks run down apocalypse-town setting. Much more fitting and creepy there. As a real song though... ugh.
