The Cronenberg remake of the Fly. He basically turned a cheesy scifi story into a twisted tale of transformation. The whole movie pretty much is about your body rejecting you, it's been seen as a metaphor for cancer, and a couple people I know compare it to Kafka's Metamorphosis.

Fistful of Dollars or Zack Snyder's Dawn of the Dead.

I admit, the originals of each are fantastic, but I personally think the remakes were better.

The Thing is the best period, but these two are definitely honorable mentions.

Dawn of the Dead was better

Battle Star Galatica was certainly better...till half way through the 3rd season and then the ending.

I'd say The Producers. It just felt...right somehow with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick as the lead characters.

Honestly, after watching the original Karate Kid again tonight, I have to say I like the remake much more.

Hold on, The Good, The Bad and The ugly is my favourite film of all time, so do you mean that Akira Kurosawa Samurai piece (Yojimbo I think) which was inspired by Westerns and was apparently the inspiration for the first in the dollars trilogy?

I want to say "Let Me In" and see what happens.
Y'know I noticed that SBS (It's a basic channel over here in Aus that serves for international media that basically fits a comfortable niche for the anime and foreign film snob crowd) is broadcasting the original "Let the right one in" this Friday, is it worth a recording?

EDIT: I'm going to have to say Scarface even though I've never seen the whole thing through.

It's not so much a remake, but the movie version of OldBoy is better than the comic.

Star Trek (2009 film) >>> Star Trek (original series)

No offence to fans of the original series, but it just hasn't aged well in my eyes...

I kid.
I don't know. If you're so brain damaged to think of The Wicker Man as a comedy, than the remake was indeed superior.

On-Topic: I'd say that 'Arsenal of Democracy' is far superior to 'Hearts of Iron II'.

It really depends on the channel. I don't think you'd quite get the right effect if scenes were missing, or if it were getting interrupted by commercials every fifteen seconds. But if it's being shown uninterrupted and completely as is, then, yeah, definitely.

Leone eventually admitted FOD was inspired by Yojimbo (after a lawsuit of course), so due to a technicality, yeah...it's a remake better than the original.

Funny that both my examples star Nicholas cage, he's terrible in the first[/v] and great in the latter.

Terrible? Did you even see "The Wicker Man"?

He dresses in a bear costume and hits people! That's the best acting piece ever, of all-time.

OT: The most obvious examples would be Scarface and The Departed, but mostly due to age reasons.

And I acn't think of anything else.

Honestly a lot of remakes are just plain awful, I only think you should "remake" a film if you have a genuinly new idea in your head, and don't simply want to rehash the old one.
The original Wicker Man is an amazing film, the remake is abysmal.
On the other hand, I think the recent remake of Bad Liutenant is actually better than the original film, but it's not so much a remake as a re-imagining.
Funny that both my examples star Nicholas cage, he's terrible in the first and great in the latter.
But the Wicker Man remake has Nicholas Cage in a bear costume ***** slapping a woman!

Also: "Shoot him again." "What? Why?!" "His soul's still dancing!"
