Is it possible to make a good remake out of a game and or movie? And by good I mean a substantial improvement to the original.

Dependent on your definition of "better". If I enjoy myself in a movie, for whatever reason, I consider it good. I considered Transformers a good movie simply because I expected nothing other than giant robots beating the crap out of each other and I got that.

You people with standards going in are just tricking yourselves. I've very rarely been disappointed by a movie. Hell, I even enjoyed Spider-man 3 because I got a good laugh.

It depends on who's making it. Fallout 3 works because it takes a completely different step, while other games are too eager to suck off their predecessor.

I liked the remake of the day the world ended. Most people don't seem to share my opinion.

Doom 3 was a good remake, as they kept the originality from the Doom and Doom 2. All they did was increase the graphics and add some extras. The only thing that lacks is the flashlight. You're in the future with Plasma Guns, BFG 9000's and big scary monsters, but the neglect to put a flashlight option on the guns. I know they want to improve the atmosphere by not having the area lit up, but still, its the future.

It depends on who makes it and what they intend to make w/ it. A homage and ball sucking means it's the same game, and a waste of money and our time as gamers most of the time. A true remake that's considered good is one that pays tribute to what makes the game good, but knows what needs to be fixed

Actually, they made the game a bit easier by including innovations from MGS2 (like first-person aiming and tranquilizer weapons).

I actually like it better than the original.

First person aiming, re-recorded VA for Liquid, lame-ass cutscenes are significant changes that lead to me saying that the original MGS is superior.

You sir, are my new best friend. I always thought Twin Snakes completely fucked over Liquid's otherwise classic lines, and for that I will never forgive that game. Original MGS or nothing.

Twin Snakes has some qualities. I prefer a lot of the other VA from Twin Snakes. Grey Fox is a massive improvement over his PSX voice, Mei Ling sounds much less like rascist typical Chinese accent (and more consistent with her actual background - raised in the USA), the rest of it I can take or leave. My main problem with Twin Snakes is the godawful cutscene direction. Whereas Grey Fox should be allowed to do more crazy Matrix/Ninja hijinks, Snakes just a human and can NOT make grenades stick to metallic surfaces.

I am yet to play a good remake of any game. Mario 64 DS is an abomination, it has no redeeming features and I am sick to death of arguing as to why this is the case. The only decent remake I can think of is Peter Jackson's King Kong, and that was far from perfect.

Doom 3 wasn't a remake... it was totally different to the older ones where you just run and gunned Serious Sam style looking for keys.

Doom 3: Classic was a remake.

The Thing from 1982 was a bad ass remake done John Carpenter of an old black and white horror.

It is possible.
Just rare.

A remake should only be made if the original needed improvments. This is where New Super Mario Bros. Wii failed.Mario Bros. didn't need any improvements,it was fine on it's own, so it's existence is meaningless.
