Doom 3 was a good remake.
Doom 3 wasn't a remake... it was totally different to the older ones where you just run and gunned Serious Sam style looking for keys.

Doom 3: Classic was a remake.
Doom 3: Classic is a Mod, not really a released remake of a game. However I will admit that the levels on Doom 3: Classic are very good and are near exact to the old versions.

The Resident Evil Gamecube remake.
That, and the Skies of Arcadia remake for Gamecube as well. It fixed the game's major problems and added a ton of extra goodies.

The Night of the Living Dead remake was, I think, far superior to the already great original.
The Dawn remake I would call a lateral move - enough was improved to balance out the stuff that was inferior.
The Magnificent Seven is just as good as Seven Samurai, with tighter pacing.

The only improved game remake I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is Bionic Commando: Rearmed.

Pokemon Soul Silver and Heart Gold.
Silver and Gold = good game for 2000
Soul Silver and Heart Gold = improvement on aforementioned good game for the currant generation.

Nuff said.

Escape from Butcher Bay was a pretty damn good remake.

It didn't change incredibly much, but it was still an excellent title and an improvement over the first.

MGS1 remake MGS the twin snakes on GC was great, improved graphics but didnt change the game itself
First person aiming, re-recorded VA for Liquid, lame-ass cutscenes are significant changes that lead to me saying that the original MGS is superior.
Same here.

They took away Mei Ling's and Naomi's accents wich were sexy as hell. And they made Liquid sound like the biggest over-actor.

Plus, they changed the music, didn't they?

Although I do hate when Hollywood remakes brilliant foreign films and dumbs down the plot and casts poor actors, because they assume that english speaking audiences are all too thick to read subtitles and are probably afraid of anything foreign.

Great films like Nikita and Rec. turned into crappy american remakes, and it's going to be the same with Let The Right One In and The Girl Who Played With Fire. It's not like these are old films or the budgets and production values were low, Hollywood just decides that people dont want subtitles.

I didn't think much of Rob Zombie's Halloween, but his sequel to that remake just oozes awesome. Better acting, better atmosphere, better emotion, better story; it all comes together very nicely.

Exactly. The only problem was that they made the cutscenes all Matrixy.

It depends on who's making it. Fallout 3 works because it takes a completely different step, while other games are too eager to suck off their predecessor.
I can't let this one slip; Fallout 3 is the prime example of a game that sucked off so many things from Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics that it's disgusting; what need there was to have the friggen' Enclave again? Not to mention everything else.
