Countless times I have seen people get constantly angry at lots of different games, including myself previously. But the solution to all this anger is right in front of everyone's eyes. JUST STOP PLAYING! It seems obvious that if you are getting angry at a game, then you are not having fun, which is sort of what a game is for isn't it.
So next time you get angry or frustrated, just put down your controller and stop playing, occupy yourself with something else.
Simple enough right?
No, actually.
You're operating under the assumption that the entire purpose of a video game is to have fun. Based on that fallacious reasoning, it would make sense that once you're frustrated, you should just stop because it's no longer entertaining. But that is to belittle what video games truly are, what they've become, and what they're capable of.
Video games are art. And like any other artistic medium, there are many more reasons to play than just because it's fun. Some play for the storytelling. Some play for the art. Some play for the competition. Any of these reasons are enough to keep going despite a game's potentially frustrating flaws.
Yunalesca, one of the final bosses in Final Fantasy X, was really difficult. I didn't level up enough before facing her, and as a result the battle was really tough. It was really frustrating. But, as in all Final Fantasy games, FFX has a fantastic story. I didn't care how frustrating it was, I had to get through it for the rest of the story.
I'm sorry, but to quit just because of frustration displays a rather simple, if not shallow understanding of video games. Even if you're not in it for any meaningful reasons, frustration is often worthwhile for the inevitable reward, one of the concepts that gaming is based on at its core. Any good game is worth going through a little frustration.
