Hotkeys.
Imagine a game like terraria or WoW With having to switch out items manually one by one.

The fighting from any fighting game. You'd be left with a mediocre story at best.

Portal - Limitation on what surfaces a Portal can be opened on.
Because it would offer no challenge.

Fallout - Humour.
Its a satirical deconstruction of mid 20th century ideas of the future with a whole bunch of cultural references and a healthy dose of fatalism. Take out the humour and its a deconstruction of mid 20th century ideas of the future designed to inspire wrist slitting.

Peggle/Casual games in general - The Sound effects.
Go play a casual game with the sound off, or better yet with a horror game soundtrack in the background. See what I mean?

Startrek games - the Crapness.
Because a decent startrek game strait out of the box would not actually require modding... ..and where's the fun in that?
Have you played the Elite Force games, they were actually quite fun.

Driving from Gran Turismo.
Shotting from Call of Duty.
Climbing rom Tomb Raider.

Remove the core mechaninc from any game and it's instantly terrible.

I'm trying to imagine my favorite open world games (San Andreas, Fallout 3) as sidescrollers.
That would be awful.

Far Cry 2 - Gun jamming OH NO WAIT THAT WOULD MAKE IT GOOD

It's like Croydon on a Friday night!
I liked the gun jamming added a bit of tension in firefights.

The stage battles from Brutal Legend. Yeah, you heard me.

Cut them out, as so many uninformed people wanted, and the entire game falls apart. The extremely fun and polished multiplayer that they worked on exclusively for the first two years of development? Gone entirely. So no more playing as Ophelia or Doviculus.

The members of Ironheade? They're no longer active participants of battles. All of their huge amounts of dialogue for all kinds of battle scenarios is gone. The double team attacks, where you can take direct control of any of them at will? No, if the game is 'just a hack and slash', they're gone too (but of course nobody who complained about the battles ever used the double teams, so it wouldn't affect them anyway). Looks like Ironheade is just going to be some characters you speak to in cutscenes but go away whenever you take your axe out because you wouldn't want them to get in the way by helping out out or anything, would you?

The solos? Well, the car one can stay, and possibly facemelter. But all the ones relating to battles? Gone. No Rock Block. No Fan Tribute. No Summon Army or Rally Flag. No Anvil of Burden.

The enemies? No point in them having actual personalities if you're never going to be able to command them in multiplayer! No point in having cars or any large enemies if you don't have any troops of your own to double team with to take them down! Or, wait, we can keep them, just make it so they die in a couple hits so you're never in any situation that you can't solve by just smashing buttons.

So what is left? Your axe, guitar, and car. No allies, just you on your own, every situation exactly the same, no variety, nothing interesting at all. So the game is basically Dante's Inferno with different textures - oh, but we all know how fun Dante's Inferno was, right guys? ...Guys?

Actually, I agree. What destroyed the tension was cowering behind a fence for up to 5 minutes, watching the same 6 unjamming animations being played without any result.

The backstories of all the characters in Fire Emblem. You'd get dumbed-down Advance Wars that you could simply grind your way through.

Fighting in Mortal Kombat.
Zombies in Left 4 Dead.
The pause menu from Fable 3--oh wait, that would kind of fix it just a little.
Demons in Doom.
Story in Legacy of Kain.
Sneaking in Thief.
Pokémon levels in Pokémon games.

Killable civilians in GTA.

Shooting bad guys in the face isn't evil, shooting a random person in the face because they tripped you is. In GTA. Not real life.
