I've never really had that problem. So long as it makes for smooth gameplay I'll accept a lot of "unrealistic" conventions without having my immersion destroyed.

I think that well-designed simulationism is good design. You definitely see game designers (or would-be game designers) who think that games are only well-designed if they have very specific design goals, but that doesn't reflect the diversity of game types that people actually like to play. There are design goals that can legitimately be criticized, but simulationism is not one of them.

You were expecting quality game design from Ubisoft? And I do agree that some games can make a lack of hand-holding a satisfying experience, like with the early Resident Evil games, but they still need to follow the rule of fun. You don't want something to seem cumbersome rather than "realistic".
They did make Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. That's pretty fucking impressive.

As idiotic as the publishers are, the Ubisoft devs are frankly quite excellent. The Prince of Persia series, the Assassin's Creed series, the Rainbow Six series, and the Splinter Cell series are all among their achievements.

All they can make is garbage. All they know HOW to make is garbage.

Your opinion doesn't make that little logo at the bottom go away. Also, Conviction was pretty solid. Not as good as Chaos Theory, but still pretty good.

Also, Ass Creed 1 was pretty ambitious given the rest of the market. Nah, you just hatin'.

Don't forget Hollywood Squares, Red Steel, The Amazing Race, and, of course, Wii Dare.
No. Ubisoft is garbage. All they can make is garbage.
They make make over twice as much money on their garbage games than they do on their AAAs. That I do give them some business props, they know how to market and sell those games.

genuinely excellent high-quality Wii games

Above: cheap shot that actually isn't accurate. Super Smash Bros is a lot of fun. Please don't eat me, Nintendo fans.

Sales mean nothing. The satisfaction of the customer is everything. Ubisoft doesn't know the meaning of the words "satisfied customer." If you can name at least 3 genuinely excellent high-quality Wii games Ubisoft has ever made, I might reconsider my stance. Probably not though. I made a vow after my Rayman Origins review that I would never say a single positive thing about Ubisoft ever again.

And no. Just Dance is shovelware, Red Steel 2 is mediocre, and Rayman Origins is nothing special.
Why is it just the wii? Because you know they just put shovelware onto it? As opposed to wanting to acknowledge that they do occasionally shat out a gem that is actually worth discussing like Rainbow Six: Vegas, the odd numbered Splinter Cells, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Beyond Good and Evil, some of the Ass Creeds or Driver: San Francisco? And did you know that a lot of the shovelware is actually just published by Ubisoft, not actually developed?

That they allow that garbage is bad enough for their reputation. A good company makes good games and scraps the low-quality ones. Like Capcom and Nintendo. Ubisoft does not deserve the praise I give those 2. Ubisoft only deserves scorn and hatred until they can prove to us that they have stopped caring about the money, stopped ripping people off, and are devoting themselves to quality gaming on every system they make games for.

................ Fat chance.
Did you REALLY just say that Capcom is a good company, or insinuate that Capcom is somehow better than Ubisoft?

Now I'm no fan of Ubisoft and their draconian DRM policies, but I refuse to allow anyone to not only say that Capcom is better than any game developer, but that Capcom is actually good. The very idea of someone stating that Capcom is a good game developer makes me wish dueling was still an acceptable way of airing grievances.

Capcom is one of the worst game developers currently in business.

You've got some good points here OP. It made me think of why I find Dark Souls to be so immersive. My character is certainly a pivotal part in the world, but the brutal and imposing nature of the world makes me feel as if the world couldn't care less if I was there or not, regardless of the importance of my role, and planned to just continue on with or without me. I also like the way the ruinous scenery makes the world feel like a place that existed long before I ever put the game in, and will continue to plod along after I'm gone.

Many of these qualities are also reflected in Skyrim. When I'm not engaging in the main "save the world" storyline (which is most of the time), I feel like piece of dust caught in the storm that is the world. I may be important to the specific group of characters that I'm interacting with for the specific quest or quest line, but I always know that there's so much more of the game world to explore, with so much else potentially going on.

Games like Dark Souls and Skyrim generally do a good job of making me feel influential, yet somehow insignificant at the same time

I like trying to think of canon reasons for hand-holding measures.

A friend and I came up with what we call "The Looter's Guild," which lays out guidelines for treasure discernment and monster placement. Related is the "Assassin's Architectural Union," which ensures that all buildings have at least one climbable route up them.

So you want them to be a fucking terrible company?

I guess that would make you right...
