how come sport and driving games have so much replay value where as FPS's dont have much at all?

i get that many of you will have replayed many games a few times but what is the number times you've ever played ONE level on compared to how many matches you've played in fifa or madden?

No story that you've already played through seems to be the main reason for me.

I can only speak for myself. usually when i finish a tiger woods or burnout game, i am done with it. after the initial season there isn't a point in playing anymore. i feel the same about RPGs as well. i will put over 100 hours in any particular RPG, do all the side quests, go to all the places, talk to all the NPCs and then finally finish the story. after all that i don't have any desire to do that again, even with a new character.

so far it has been the FPS and it's third person cousin that proved to have replay value. Recently bioshock 2 has proven to have great replay value. i think the replay value comes from playing the game on it's highest difficulty the first time, then going back on normal. somehow, for me at least, there are two different games within these difficulty settings.

I usually play FPS games 3 or 4 times through, whereas I never spend more than 5 minutes on a racing game.

With games with story, I often play through a few times, each playthrough often being months to a year after the one before it. I mostly do it to re experience the story and maybe notice new things. It's like reading your favorite book several times.

With racing games, there's often no story, but races can be endless. So for those who love racing, you can race endlessly. Don't know how many times I raced with friends in Mario Kart.

Weird because the games that gets the most playtime on Xboxlive are all FPS's...

Plus I couldn't make myself play one round of those spots games, but I can play COD or Halo for hours each day.

I don't think racing games have more replay value than FPS. Once I go through career mode, I'm done. There really is no more I'm interested in playing on that; I've defeated the challenge.

FPS games... it depends on the game, but often I'll play it through with different friends. So they actually get more play time from me.

Well if multi-player counts as replay, I guess FPS's do have a lot more replay then most games.

Each match or game in a sports video game has a certain degree of variability. It's unlikely that two matches will play out exactly the same way, which forces the user to be aware of any number of strategies to take in order to adapt.

FPS (in my experience, I haven't messed with this genre much in recent years so correct me if I'm wrong) are largely scripted. A certain amount of enemies are going to appear in certain locations. So the variability here depends pretty much all on how the player decides to kill those enemies.

Of course, there is a better explanation for why some people can play sports games over and over and others can play a FPS game over and over: individual differences.

If FIFA and Madden had such great replay value, how come they take up half the used games bin at EB/Gamestop and nobody wants to buy them even at $0.50?

Games with good replay value don't get traded in when the sequel comes out.

I have played Doom more than most other games, but I think non-linear games have the most replay value if done right. Most racing games fit into this category since a lot of them let you take on whatever races you want when you want as long as you meet the requirements. Unlike linear games, you can do some rally racing, then switch to some tarmac races, then dab into drifting for a short spell before trying more tarmac races again.
Linear games suffer because you have to go here first, then do this, then this in this order.

Once multiplayer comes into the picture...FPS's and other online games just blow away single player racing games and sports games out of the water. Just look at people's total play time on certain games.
The onyl way for single player games to extend their replay value is with DLC's and mods. Mods for oblivion and Fallout3 easily quadrupled the replay value for me.

It may just be me, but some RPG's have way more replayability than any sport sort of game. Fallout 3 being my best example. I've played through that game sooo much.

Wait...who says FPSs don't have replay value? I think there's few rather large franchises of fans who'd beg to differ.

Honestly, I play through almost any game I enjoy more than once. When I'm playing for the story, I just wait longer before I replay, because it's more like rereading a favorite book.
