This is a rare example of musical horror, one of the most sorely neglected and underrated genres of music, Repo! is what you would get if you mixed up the Saw movies, Blade runner, Rocky horror picture show and Phantom of the opera. Set in a strange dystopia future where humans have suffered an outbreak of organ failures and so are forced to rely on organ transplants which are provided by a giant corporation known as Geneco and if they can't afford it then they can get an organ on a loan payment. However if you fail to keep up with your payments then geneco will dispatch one of its legal surgical assassins to collect its property back.

The story follows one of these Repo men, Nathan Wallace (played by Anthony head from buffy) and the daughter Shilo who he must hide his double life from (played by Alexa Vega from the spy kids movies) and the appearance of her mysterious Godmother, who is a slave to Geneco, owing them a debt for giving her eyes , there's also the fact that the owner of Geneco Rotti Largo is dying and must find a suitable heir to his empire, and his current three children are not suitable material for the job. The eldest Luigi has a violent temper and stabs nearly anyone who gets in his way, his brother Pavi cuts women's face's off to wear them on his own, and his sister Amber (played by Paris Hilton) is constantly changing her appearance with excessive surgery and is hooked on a street drug known as Zydrate, which she acquires from the narrator of this entire opera, the strange Graverobber who makes the Drug Zydrate from dead corpses.

First off the cast for this have been casted excellently, Anthony head gives a magnificent performance as the torn Doctor who struggles between being the protecting father and the Repo Man, his singing throughout the film is brilliant, switching between the light tone of Nathan and the deep singing of the Repo Man. He is supported by the brilliant voice of Sarah Brightman a professional Opera singer in real life, who plays the part of none over then a professional opera singer. Another notably good singer is Terrance Zdunich who plays the part of Graverobber making the character a remarkably eccentric and cheerful character in such a dark world. Also someone who surprises is Paris Hilton, who to my surprise seems to actually be able to act and sing rather well. Though the fact that she plays the part of a spoilt rich slut may have something to do with it, (you get to see her face fall off at one part).

With the exception of one or two songs nearly every number in the movie is wonderful, with a wide range of different feels and styles to them, from the darkly humours "Thankless Job" number which is about the fun of gutting someone up all done in a nice cheerful voice, to the Electric club style out of "We started this opera shit", there's also the beautiful operatic "Chromaggic" and the dark violent "night surgeon song" which finishes with a man being disembowelled. Whatever your musical tastes it's likely you'll find a song you like. There seems to be a new number every few minutes and it moves the movie along at a brilliant pace, keeping your attention. Even if you don't particularly like musicals you can watch it just for the intriguing and original story and the oh so fantastic special effects. Also coming from the makers of the Saw movies there's buckets of gore and violence aplenty, with organs flying this way and that.

So in conclusion this is a movie you should view, simply for how different and original it is compared to nearly every other movie out at the moment, the story is strong and full of twists and turns though I do wish they went into more depth with some of the fantastical characters they have created, the world this is all set in is such a strange steampunk, gothic world where blood is cheap and Gold makes the world go round. If you enjoy Horror movies, Dramas or musicals then you will find something to enjoy here. Just remember the claims medic give no anaesthetic and 90 days delinquents gets you Repo treatment, so watch it or I'll come and cut out your heart

Nice review, I guess some people do enjoy the movie. However, I'm not one of those people...
Anonymouse just pointed out some things that really drag down the movie and the big ones would have to be "disjointed music" and poor song writing. It's not even the lyrics that gets me that much, but rather the melody and tune (or lack thereof). They attempted to fill the backstory with well drawn comic strips, but even those went on too long. Give us at least a narration to keep the viewers focused during the movie... What's worst is we know some/many of those actors/actresses can sing (whether we've seen it in previous works) but non of the talent is showcased in this movie. There's plenty of details that should've been omitted but instead they kept it in and skimped on the depth of the story. This world that they created seems uninhabitable and other than the circus scene, didn't show many other human interactions other than the ones with Nathan/Shilo with Geneco. Unnecessary gore and violence showed me how mindless the movie was. I'm not saying that gore and violence make a movie bad, but there's needs to be some balance.

On the other hand, I have to give credit where it's due. The cinematography was good and to me the best part about the film. I wouldn't mind if Sin City had the same effects. It was original and the trailer was well done, which enticed me to watch the movie and had a pretty solid cast. I think they could've fixed many things with the story if they added another half hour (at least) to the movie because the whole things is about 1.5hrs. That's really short. Even so, the biggest problem lies in the aforementioned music which is clearly fundamental to a musical. Obviously if someone like the music, than most of my arguments become void and you may actually like the thing.

I thought a movie that did everything well was Sweeny Todd. That's my kind of morbid musical.

I love this movie. Actually I didn't even notice Paris Hilton at first because she was, as mentioned in the review good at her part (i.e. playing herself).

Good review, though I have to agree with some of the posters above me; the songwriting left a little to be desired. Some of the songs, such as 21st Century Cure and We Started This Opera Sh*t are great songs and a blast to listen to but overall they were lackluster and something of an acquired taste.

The acting on the part of the leads (Anthony Head as Nathan especially) saved this movie and made it more then just an attempt at being different. They made it a (comparatively) new and enjoyable experience that fans of goth/metal music, opera or even just the absurd should try out.

Brilliant movie, I'm glad someone's sticking up for it, and you're absolutely right about it. Nearly every song is catchy and sticks in your head for days. It's a unique story with a great cast and I love it.

I love this film. I shows what can be done when you combine genres in new ways. Horror musicals defiantly have a lot of potential and I personally would have enjoyed the various horror films I have been forced to sit through if the characters sang some songs relating to their predicament( Jeepers Creepers is an example I'll use. I would have enjoyed it if someone had made the creeper sing a little song relating to his 23 year hibernation and other stuff like that). And if any horror movie purists out there want to wine about this post please teleport yourself into the derelict space ship form the fist 2 alien films.

This film is pretty much battling to be my favorite movie. I have a very morbid sense of humor and love gore and music, so that film was pretty much all I could've asked for. The characters are so interesting to me (especially how their stories intertwine). I particularly love the Largos. They're so messed up in the most horrible and hysterical way.

Also, the music is so catchy. I need the soundtrack.

As a man who loved both RHPS and the first few Saw movies, I thought nothing could bring those 2 loves together. Then I found out about this movie, and simply loved it...

I enjoy this film and its soundtrack. It's a guilty pleasure of mine.

Nice, well-written review. There are a couple spelling & punctuation errors, and it couldn't hurt to include a couple images in there.

Just my $0.02 for you.

Repo! is one my favorite movies in the world! Great cast, great music, and great plot. It's a complete masterpiece that can be appreciated by so many people and in so many ways. I first saw it when it was on FearNet on demand back in April, and then I bought it awhile later. It's definitely something I don't regret doing.
