Massive multiplayer online games have been transitioning from a subscription-based fee to the Free-to-Play model with microtransactions included. It seems that Bungie may not have gotten that memo as today they announced that the multi-platform BAFTA winning MMOFPSRPG Destiny will be using a monthly sub fee.
"The team had to sit down and ask some really hard questions. Is it possible to have too much money? We all came to a unanimous 'no' and then immediately started to work on it. Our publisher Activision fully supports this course of action and we couldn't be happier. We're not evil, we're just greedy! Besides, no one's going to read your crappy 'news' story so I can just say whatever I want and no one will care" said lead designer Luke Smith.
Osborne also talked on the decision to go this route as well as the possible fan backlash.
"While we wanted to go ahead and jump off this sinking ship of a game and get right to the sequel, we remembered that we still had expansions to put out. I really have to fire the guy who leaked this would be a 10 year plan. Anyway, we'd use the money we got from the sales and development budget but we kinda spent it all on hookers and heroin. Paying a monthly fee would help to recuperate our losses and help fund our rehab. We're also looking into Patreon, KickStarter and IndieGoGo for more funds as well."
"Honestly, we never really thought about player feedback. Remember, gamers still think World of Warcraft is still good after ten years. They're the people that want a f**king remake of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The average gamer has an IQ roughly equal to that of a pinecone. I'd rather trust the suits and stock-holders than our fans. They still REALLY want another Oni game, that should tell you everything right there" said Smith.
As of now, there seem to be no rewards for early buyers of the game. Activison head Bobby Kotick reportedly 'choked on his laughter' when he heard of this idea.
