Sorry if this has already been mentioned.

According to Kotaku FF Versus XIII has been cancelled which I guess if true is unsurprising as there has been no mention of it in a long time.

I think it's a shame, it looked pretty good and I was looking forward to hearing more.

What do you think? Gutted? Not bothered?

EDIT: Just to let you know, The Escapist has its' own article on the rumour here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/118618-Rumor-Square-Enix-Has-Axed-Final-Fantasy-Versus-XIII].

Square is looking to announce something XIII related for the Final Fantasy 25th Anniversary Event on September 1[sup]st[/sup] at a presentation titled 'Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Saga: New Developments'. Some believe this to possibly be FF XIII-3.

Here's hoping they salvage FF Versus XIII in some capacity.

I'm not sure yet...
Final Fantasy Type O survived, even if in a different form than originally planned.
If it is canceled, this won't be good for Square, they're gonna have a lot of pissed off fans.

*insert complaint about poor time management and priorities*

That really sucks. This game was the only compelling thing about the series in a very, very long time for me.

Annnnnnd that's it, done, no more Squenix for me, you can dedicate resources to making rhythm games and a tech demo but 6 years and you just can your more interesting projects? Done, bye Square, good luck selling the FFVII PC relaunch when all your fans are pissed at you.

So what the fuck have they been doing all this time?
My guess would be Final Fantasy 13-2 and 13-3, neither of which look anywhere near as promising as versus does.

This will more likely turn into Final Fantasy XV down the track anyway, so I wouldn't be to worried. They have to much shit to do already, FFXIV is still basically broken, and then theres the PS3 release of that on its way, not to mention XIII-3, which has been teased. So it's probably a smart move, especially if they were not that far into the development, since they said they only started really working on it last year, not to mention the fact it was to be an exclusive.

It sucks, but it makes sense I suppose... Hopefully it returns in the future as FFXV, because it actually looked pretty good from the little bit we saw, but then I said the same thing about FFXIII before it came out and that burnt me.. so.. yea.. whatever I suppose.

Yeah SE really need to actually finish their games, best thing they can do is put projects on hold and put their effort into fewer games.

No, XIII and its numerical sequels are being handled by the team under Motomu Toriyama. Versus was being developed by a different team under Tetsuya Nomura. It was his job to get it done.

S-E already rebranded Agito XIII as Type-0. My guess is that most of the Versus assets will be similarly redeveloped if there's any truth to the rumor about the title's cancellation.

Wow, if this is true, then I guess that literally is the death knell for Final Fantasy games for me.

What was once my favourite series has grown so shoddy that I avoid them completely; Versus was the only one that looked good, thanks to Nomura.

At least he can focus on KH3 now?

Don't own a ps3 so cant play it but damn it did look good....has enix got some kinda phobia to success, dosh and fan love lately? Not good since the whole shambles of ff14 still lingers here and there too.

Well, that's a real shame. We'll probably see some of those assets in a different game (like how XIII-2 is stuff they cut from XIII), but it sucks that this game won't be coming out. It looked really good.

Edit: AND after we never got Type 0. 0_0 Now I'm really sad.

If this is true? wow. I'm not sure how I'll react, but that's a damned shame. Versus was looking to be really good and fun.

Nothing like making the fan bases of final fantasy and kingdom hearts wait 6 years for you to spit in their faces.

FFXIII was so bad it was the first final fantasy I couldn't finish out of sheer boredom.

And the game I was looking forward to they decide to cancel to continue crashing the FF series into the group with more XIII sequel/spinoff crap.

I'm sorry SE but it shouldn't take a decade or longer for your to produce a good game.

Well fuck you Square Enix. I guess they really needed those guys who were working on it to start working on XIII-3.

After the disappointment of XII, XIII, XIII-2 and XIV, Versus was really the last title I was actively looking forward to from Square Enix. The more I read about it, the more it looked like the direction they should have been heading in from the start, and I've seen a lot of the same opinion in other places. The last mention of Versus was in April, and they claimed that they were readying a new gameplay trailer to show, so of course people are going to have been waiting and looking forward to it.

If they suddenly announce that they're stopping the game altogether, they'll be hurting themselves in the long run. Patience and trust in Square Enix to produce good games has been wearing thin for a long time, and I suspect for many this will be the last straw.

This is probably a hoax. What better way to squeeze info out of SE than to announce rumor that clearly gives way to a specific reaction--namely how we're all reacting now. It's like a catch-22 for SE. If they don't respond to the rumor, everyone will think it's true. If they respond and tell us to wait, a lot of people will think it's true. If they respond and give us any sort of info--great or small--it's more likely than not false. If they announce that Versus will be appearing at TGS then we'll know that it's a false rumor.

Unless Kotaku themselves has a credible source for this (IGN just reporting on a Kotaku rumor isn't good enough) then I'll wait until SE gives an official announcement. Anything other than that is just premature worrying over nothing.
