It's a shame it's going to be a PS4 exclusive. I'm not about to drop $500 for just one game.

Maybe they'll call this one "The Rest of Us", or "The Next of Us."

Hey, that last one sounded cool. Humanity clawing its way out of the apocalypse is always a setting I appreciate.

Ewwwwwww, the first one ended so perfectly. I would've been completely fine with them never touching the property ever again and just making other equally amazing games about other worlds.

Let's hope they don't royally fuck it up.

Call it 'The Last of Me' and have it be about Ellie going bonkers as the last human survivor.

If they are making a sequel they're not going to ditch Joel and Ellie, they're too popular. They'll likely have it take place farther into the future, maybe even 20 years to correlate with the first game, and have you take control of a 34- year old Ellie as she guides a 67-ish-year old Joel across the wasteland after Tommy's settled gets destroyed or something. Or maybe Joel croaks and they'll give you another kid to look after.

At least, that's the only way I can see a sequel with the same characters working.

I knew it was coming, and I wish it wasn't, so please don't fuck this up, Naughty Dog.
I was thinking along those lines too. Play as an older Ellie, kill Joel off near the beginning, have him apologize for the last line from the first game as his final act, have her admit that she knew all along, and make the game focus on what happens to Ellie post-Joel. She'd be old enough she might even have a child by that point, if you really want to hold onto the "escort a child" part.

I really don't understand why people react so negatively towards this. The only sequel I wouldn't want is the further adventures of Joel and Ellie and I think it's highly doubtful that will happen.
Yes, the ending was spot-on (for most people) but making a sequel about different characters with a completely different story doesn't ruin or cheapen the first game. Just because Naughty Dog recognises a successful franchise and may want to make some money (like a freaking business would) doesn't necessarily mean they're just going to shit out some half-arsed money-makers every year. They clearly put a lot of heart into The Last Of Us and I strongly doubt that would change for a sequel.
At the end of the day, if you don't want a sequel then don't buy it. Don't even read any reviews or watch any gameplay videos otherwise you're just "spoiling" your own experience for the sake of complaining.

There's two problems when making a sequel with other characters.

1) Joel and Ellie are the stars of the show. Most of the other characters were great too, but Joel and Ellie and their relationship were the main event. Making a sequel without them would feel like it's missing the center piece.

2) Joel and Ellie were the perfect protagonists for us to view the world of The Last of Us. Joel is the hardy, but world weary survivor, and Ellie is the young and eager, but naive protegé. From the beginning onward we get to see through their experiences what the world and humanity has been reduced to. And the way both their arcs finnish perfectly reflects on the surviving remnants of humanity as a whole.

There's no need to revisit this setting with a different set of characters, because Joel and Ellie have already shown us everything we really needed to see.

Undisputed? No, whether or not it was one of the best games of 2013 is definitely disputed (I, for one, hated it). But modern philosophy about games does seem to be that if you find success, you beat that success in the the ground. Well whatever, make one sequel or one hundred sequels. I have no interest in this series ever again (unless they decide to drop the shooting), so what they do with the series from here is irrelevant to me

Huh. Seems I'm in the minority in thinking that there's plenty of room for them to make an excellent sequel and for it to keep the same characters. I mean, absolutely, if they were going to go with different characters, they could make a great game, yes, but just because they made a good first game with wonderful character dynamics doesn't mean that they can't go any further. Have we become so used to the blatant setting up of sequels that we ignore viable possibilities if they aren't telegraphed like crazy? Or maybe it's cause some of you want to imagine them living happily ever after, I dunno.

Just because they've gone through all this character growth doesn't mean there's nothing else for them to do in their lives, ever. Sure, it won't be the same, but then that's a good thing - we want something new that builds on the experiences we've already had, not just to go through variations on a theme. Yes, to do a sequel with the same characters runs the risk of it going wrong and somewhat tainting our opinion of the first game, but to say that you can't make a good story with those characters from where they left off is unimaginative at best and facetious at worst.

But if they do end up going with an entirely new cast, I'll probably also enjoy it - just not quite as much.

No. Please don't. As much as I'd like to explore more of the universe of Last of Us (I.E. The origins of the Fireflies, the ensuing weeks/months of the outbreak, what happened outside the States (Seriously, this needs to be addressed in more post-apocalyptic stuff. Does the rest of the world continue to function?), the story was pretty complete. I'd mucher rather ND have one team working on Uncharted, and the other team making high quality, individual games. Never making another sequel or franchise. Just dropping some of the best single games ever.

If Telltales The Walking Dead can pull of doing another season, I will give them the benefit of the doubt. That said, I need to finish the damn game, plus they have DLC story stuff coming as well don't they? I would have thought that would be enough.

Could say the same for almost any game in existence, it's nothing new when someone hops onto a forum to say that line, it's been said over a million times, it's not going to make ND pander to those that don't have a PS4.

I didn't have a decent PC for years and I missed out on all them so called "juicy exclusives", but now I have one I'm less than impressed and the same could go for the PS4, if you don't have the money then don't buy one, if you don't think it's wroth then look somewhere else.

It's better to look elsewhere than whine about how something should come to you, life doesn't work that way and it never even should.

There is no way in hell we are going to see two Naughty Dog games released in the same year. Omelete clearly just got confused about Uncharted 4, hearing Naughty Dog were making a sequel and connecting the wrong dots.

Oh yay, more awful controls in a zombie-infested world where all you end up killing are other humans.

Let's just kill off all zombie everything for about ten years and start fresh. Please? All anything ends up being is "Humans are bad. Even worse than the flesh-eating beasts that threaten your lives daily."

Given that it's a rumour from an 'anonymous source', I'm going to remain sceptical about this.

That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if a sequel was made for The Last Of Us, since almost every success gets a sequel. I'm not sure where they would really go with a sequel though. I think that continuing with Joel and Ellie wouldn't lead to a very good game, I don't really know where they could go character-wise from here. On the other hand, I'm not sure how they'd fair with new characters either, since it could easily just end up a retread of the same story.

I would be kind of interested to play a sidequel (I'm pretty sure that's actually a thing now) to the first game, but from the perspective of the Fireflies. The only problem with that would be playing to a foregone conclusion, but that's been done successfully before with prequels, so it's not entirely unfeasible. And if the same writers are used, I'd say that they have the potential to pull it off.

But then, I'd be perfectly happy if this did turn out to be completely wrong.

Suddenly some people don't want to see TLOU 2?, what so you get to decide what ND creates and you don't think people (let alone a few in the world) want to see a sequel?.

Ugh, fuck this.

The Last of Us doesn't need a sequel. It's fine on its own, it told a self-contained story with a purpose that was met.

A sequel can only serve to cheapen the original.

No, this is all just hoping Naughty Dog knows how to quit when they're ahead. You know, something the Wachowski's should've done after they made The Matrix.
