When was that game made? 2005, right? It's probably got the best squad dynamic of any video game that utilizes that mechanic. The squadmates in Republic Commando weren't dead weight like a lot of AI allies in video games. But they also didn't restrict the way you played the game, they enhanced it. You didn't have to wait for the AI ally to catch up before you could advance. Instead, you ordered Scorch to blow open a path. You also didn't need to babysit them to make them useful, like most companions in Bioware RPGs. It's amazing that this game was made almost 10 years ago and is still (in my mind) the best example for squad based shooters to follow.
