Lets say you were a teacher in charge of a videogame course similar to a literature course, and you needed 3 games from any genre or year or medium for the students required playing (knowing that they'd have to maybe write or discuss about them). What 3 would you pick and why?

Super Mario Bros - Pure classic, pure platformer, and was one of the first titles that brought home console gameing back from the abyss.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Classic! RPG elements, puzzle solving, easy to learn, but still challenging. This one game included so many elements that we take for granted today.

Tie: Halo 3 and Bioshock:
Halo 3 - A good starting place for any FPS fan. Good design, good story, and one of the best multiplayers around.
Bioshock - Pretty much better then Halo in everyway, story, level design, controls, but no multiplayer.

Baldur's Gate: Learn why RPG's rule all.

Medieval 2: Total War: Because nothing is more satisfying than stopping a cavalry charge...with a ribault.

Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt: Go Big or Go Home.

Oh bugger only 3 right? Because i would put Rome: Total War and Portal there if i could :(
Yup, it's only a 2 credit course :p

as for me
Super Mario Brothers 3 - the shining example of the series.
Soul Calibur 3 - Not the first fighter, or necessarily the best, but again a great example of many different elements
Baldur's Gate 2 - A great example of epic storytelling through the RPG

Kotor

WoW

condemned.

I think that would cover a lot, would be better if I could add more, If I could I'd add Mario and a few other games.

Half Life 2- use your imagination
A Half Life 2 Mod of students choice- because I said so
Team Fortress 2- excellent multiplayer, balanced, humorous, and really, really fun.

I'd say Legend of Zelda Ocarina Of Time and Super Mario just because of their sheer impact on gaming. To carry on the OP's analogy of a literature course. These would be the games that although they may not neccessarily stand up now, they have had an obvious impact on their medium that it would not be the same had they never existed. Maybe the equivalents of Woolf (except more fun).

Then Call of Duty 4 as it is a very well put together game with easily traceable influences, still maintaining its own clearly defined personality.

I haven't chosen any games with overt artistic pretentions because I believe at this stage, any form of artistic expression in games are quite shallow and insubstantial. The games chosen are not my favourites, but ones which I believe would give a good grounding in modern 3D gaming while having enough substance in their design to hold up to detailed analysis. I was quite torn between Call of Duty 4 and HL2 but as Call of Duty is newer, better representing the current state of games imo along with offering a more condensed experience. All these games were chosen purely on their merits as a game as I didn't want myself (or any others) to simply choose my favourite game because 'its awesome'.

1. Chrono Trigger: Everything that was ever good about JRPGs in one game.
2. God Hand: Everything that was ever good about brawlers... You get the idea.
3. Comix Zone: The forerunner to Viewtiful Joe.
4. Illusion of Gaia or Secret of Mana (or both.)
5. Devil May Cry 3: SE, because it's the pinnacle of action gaming.
6. MGS3: Subsistence, because it's just that good.
