Resident Evil 6 is getting its ass kicked by critics

Played through part of it earlier with a friend of mine. It's definitely a "so shit it's kind of good" game for me. It's incredibly stupid, really badly designed and hugely unoriginal. It manages to function poorly as both an original Resident Evil game and a stand-alone action game. It really is terrible.

However, like the Resident Evil movies, it has a weird sort of mindlessly stupid "I can't believe someone quite made this" quality to it which makes it kind of enjoyable when you're playing with a friend.

I recommend getting a few friends round, having a few beers and embracing the diabolical stupidity that is Resident Evil 6. You get bonus points for snatching your friends' controller so he fails one of the thousand or so QTE events you will have to sit through.

I'm going to borrow it off my friend to see how bad it is, I refuse to give Capcom money for what sounds like a complete mess.

Also, Jim sterlings review was brutal and funny.

It sounds like they took most of what I disliked from Resident Evil 5 and made it worse. It can be a fine line between "let's ratchet up the tension by making the player deal with threats in unfavorable circumstances" and "let's make basic functions so unwieldy that the player has to restart ten times going through a sequence before stumbling through largely on luck", but it sounds like Capcom has come down firmly on the wrong side.

I think it's great when a game changes it up. Resident Evil was basically the exact same game with keys in different locations up until Resident Evil 4 finally changed things up. I'm glad to see something different, and that's speaking from the perspective of someone that's been with Resident Evil since the beginning.

The thing about my opinion is that Resident Evil games have always been fun, but they've never been GREAT. Not even 4. I always enjoy them and I really love horror games, but the demo for 6 has met my expectations. I look forward to playing the full game and seeing it for myself.

I read reviews as a guideline to see what other game journalists think about it. The game has received mixed reviews so far, but some of my favorite games have. I tried to read Jim Sterling's review of the game, and though I'm sure his opinion is as honest as only Jim could be, I had to stop reading it until I play the full game for myself.

Listen to the critics, but if you don't play it for yourself, you'll never TRULY know that it's shit. You'll just know a bunch of people told you it's shit. Well, a bunch of people also told me that Twilight is entertaining.

I always check X-play's reviews of games first (Don't know why I do that still, since Adam is gone and Morgan barely reviews games now, but that's besides the point). Anyway, I just looked at the score first. 2.5 (remember the days when they swore they'd never do a 1 to 10 scale? Good times) and immediately went, "Ouch." Sent it off to my friend, who's interested in getting the game but isn't sure about it.

Then I read the review. He seemed to praise the game a lot more than the score reflected. And some of the stuff he was complaining about seemed a bit...silly, I guess? Menus are way too complicated? Honestly? Basically, I finished the review scratching my head and not understanding what I'd just read.

I fully intend to buy the game--already have it preordered from Amazon--and will have fun with it. I just like to read reviews to see what other critics are saying. I was a little surprised by this one.

I wonder if Capcom shipped off the Devil May Cry franchise because they knew they themselves were too incompetent to do their own series justice, even if they tried. If they fucked up a Resident Evil, arguably their flagship series at this point, this badly, I may actually stop being so goddamn harsh on DmC.

Well as far as the main series goes I think the last good one was 3. 4 was an action game, it was the zombie version of uncharted and 5 followed suit but more so.

Why did resident evil stop being a horror game and more ... hum drum?

I will still buy this 'cos it will last me till assassins creed and I do have a soft spot for the films and games sooo what the fudge.

Im going to go ahead and say this, as pretentious as it sounds, but I felt like it was going to be "Meh", so to speak, in the first place.

If theres one thing that the Resident Evil series hasn't learned, its when to stop.

Just look at the movie franchise.

I'd say it should probably be doing worse, but I haven't played it so I can't complain too loudly. If Capcom wants to make an action game, and they make great action games, they need to jettison all of the old survival horror trappings already. As much as I'd love the old RE back, it's not coming back and keeping all of that baggage is just making the series as it exists now a watered down half baked mess.

I've been watching this behavior since Resident Evil 3 came out.
Which Resident Evil 3 do you mean? Nemesis on the PS1 which started out as a spin off title or Code Veronica on the DC which was supposed to be Resi 3 but was changed at the last moment due to a deal with Sony.

You probably already know this but the main series has as many scrapped versions where Shinji Mikami decided the game wasn't working and started from scratch, it's this process that created DMC. Capcom should have done the same with Resi 6 instead of spending even more time and money polishing a turd.

This YT vid series gives a very good lowdown on RE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s05c9vC-5l0

I mean Resident Evil 3, as in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Didn't see Nemesis as a bad game by any stretch, but for whatever reason it never pulled me in like 1, or 2. I really liked Code Veronica because it's heart & soul was more classic Biohazard, and it really nailed the atmosphere and story. It was far spookier and you really felt compelled to uncover the mystery, which was similar to the very first.

All in all, I've been playing Resident Evil on each of it's releases.. I watched a friend play Resident Evil 1 and was blown away at how tense and spooky it was. I didn't realize games could do that.. so Resident Evil: Director's cut ended up being the first game I bought for PS1. Never looked back since.

Getting 6 despite the "Capcom should burn in a fire" bandwagon nonsense. Doesn't seem like a turd to me at all, it has really high presentation like all their other main-entries. You either love it or you hate it.

Jim very gracefully summed up my experience with the god-awful demo, but I was thinking that the game would get glowing reviews due to its "me too" attitude towards games that are rated very well.

Really, if Resident Evil as a franchise is interested in severing its roots, 4 used a pair of scissors while 6 pulled out the giant chainsaw. Sad, really, because I loved 4, and beat it across all kinds of systems.
And what, exactly, were these roots? Choose your words carefully, you may not remember what actually transpired.

I do not really care about the actiony path RE6 wants to take at all. I do not mind that attracting a different kind of audience to the series. But can we keep up the dedication to horror too? Revelations on the 3ds honestly did pretty well. If we could just keep the horror and the action going, hell, i would not *****. I wouldn't be happy that RE even wants to be actiony, but if it attracts, it attracts.

There is a lot of rage over at CVG right now about their review. Basically, the review points out that the game has some serious flaws, brings none of the old Resi magic, is not worth the full retail price AND YET sticks a 8/10 on it. This game is garbage IMO, when a game gets compared to a Michael Bay movie that is not something I want to take part in. I mean, there is a specific reason why I have enjoyed the Resident Evil games up until now and with this they removed all of them. Capcom was not kidding when they said they wanted the Resi games to become like CoD.

Most of the Japanese developers have lost their mind, wanting to westernise their franchises to cash in, yet they don't understand that in the process they are ruining their games and our incentives to play them in the first place.
