Capcom announced Resident Evil 7 biohazard, the next major entry in the famed Resident Evil series, today during Sony's press conference at E3 2016 in Los Angeles, California. While Resident Evil 7 draws from the series' roots of atmospheric survival horror, it also delivers a whole new level of terror. In the classic Resident Evil games of yesteryear, players braced for fear in the first-person via the creepy door-opening scenes, and Resident Evil 7 ramps up that tension with an immersive first-person view and a photorealistic graphical style.

Capcom is able to achieve a shocking degree of visual fidelity thanks to the new proprietary in-house RE Engine that includes VR oriented tools. Last year's "KITCHEN" tech demo for PlayStation VR was in fact built on this new engine as well. With the RE Engine plus industry leading audio and visual technologies, you experience every abhorrent detail up close and personal in Resident Evil 7. Playing the game in the PlayStation VR Mode escalates the unsettling feeling of presence to a level that horror fans have never experienced. That's right, the full gameplay experience is available in the included PlayStation VR Mode from beginning to end. No Resident Evil you've ever survived could prepare you for this.

Of course, a horror story is only as frightening as its setting, and Resident Evil 7 pays tribute to the franchise's origins on this front as well. Resident Evil 7 is set after the events of Resident Evil 6, taking place in modern day and revolving around a foreboding, derelict plantation mansion in rural America. Players must explore and survive the horrors within the mysterious, sprawling estate.

It's certainly... something. Definitely a bit left field. It's not really the game either section of the fanbase was expecting. The game is set after the events of Resident Evil 6, so they're keeping the lore intact, while they seem to be moving in a bold new direction in terms of gameplay and story.

Not sure what to make of Resident Evil just yet.

If they show promise I'll support it, if not I'll ignore another Resident Evil game again.

Given my loathing of the first person view in games and the very low opinion I had of Resident Evil 6, I can't see myself rushing out to buy this entry into the series.

It's interesting to read though that they've designed a new engine for the game which is for VR. Taking the chance a spin off is understandable but risking your main series for something most people aren't going to be able to afford at the moment (especially since they'll be saving for new consoles) is very risky.

It doesn't look very Resident Evil to me. If anything, I got a more Silent Hill/PT feel from it. Not that that's a bad thing exactly, but I'm used to RE being about shooting zombies.

But it's just a CGI trailer, so judgement is reserved for the moment. I do like the setting though, so that's a point in its favor already.

Looks like a cross between PT and Condemned.

Not very Resident Evil at all, doesn't have the a similar feel, and it doesn't seem very action or puzzle oriented.

Honestly, I'm interested in it as it would probably be the first Resident Evil game that's more horror than camp, but I'm going to echo everyone else in this thread and say that it should probably have been an original IP instead.

They could have marketed it as the Silent Hill Konami was afraid to make.

After Resident Evil 6 I don't think that Resident Evil can get any worse. Hell, I had Resident Evil dead and buried in my heart and prefered to remember our beatiful moments together like in the first three, Code Veronica and Resident Evil 4 and nothing else.

"But what about Revelations?" You mean that thing that sucked half of time and yet gonna universal approval for not suck all the time?

"But what about Revelations 2?" Unless you name is Telltale, releasing a game in episodes don't fucking fly with me.

So, yes, I am very excited for it. Because for the very first time in years I feel that Resident Evil returned to his mother genre (Survival Horror) that should never have left even if it changed it to first person and the focus on the supernatural rather than biological threats. There I said it.

"But Diablo..." I hear you start to which I reply "I THOUGH A SERIES I LOVED WAS DEAD SHUT UP LET ME HAVE THIS."

The game supports VR, but it's otherwise a normal game.

I don't think it's CG. There's already a demo for PS4, and the graphics of the demo seem identical. Bear in mind, however, that the demo could be VERY different from the final game.

It's been noted that the demo features the line, "Welcome to The Family."

Which is more likely than not talking about THAT Family, albeit in an evasive manner.

Ghosts, in Resident Evil? GHOSTS?!

Jesus Chris, Umbrella Corps seems more like an RE game at this point (BOW-based enemies, third person, etc.) And no, don't mention the original conception of RE4, I'm not lamenting that the original supernatural element was cut.

Just make it a new IP Capcom. If you want to do supernatural stuff, that's fine, especially since Silent Hill has fallen...ahem, "silent." But it's hardly a fit for the Resident Evil setting.

Haven't played RE6, so maybe it truly is worse, but are we really counting RE6 as a weaker installment than Gaiden or Survivour?

It's a Resident Evil 6 sequel. Ghosts do not exist in the Resident Evil universe. You're likely dealing with some kind of BOW and possibly some sort of hallucinogenic parasite, chemical, etc. Think Resident Evil 4's scrapped storyline about Leon being infected and suffering severe hallucinations. There never were supernatural elements in Resident Evil, even in the scrapped versions.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort of connection to Revelations 2, either.

Gaiden and Survivor (Dead Aim too if you wanna count that one, though I kinda enjoyed it back in the day. Probably won't hold if played today) are spin offs and not canon as far as I can tell, so, no, I wouldn't count them. Resident Evil 6 is a main series title, and awful one. It lacked focus with their four campaigns, the plot was absurd and just overall badly written even by Resident Evil standards which are quite low to be honest, controls weren't even that good though walking and shooting was a nice addition and it was full of annoying QTE from beggining to end.
"But Leon's Campaing was decent"... No, it wasn't. It was better if you compaired with the others, it doesn't make it good.

So yeah, Resident Evil 6 is pretty bad. I wouldn't say "It's the worst game I've ever played" but like I said it almost single handed killed the series for me and the faith I had in Capcom in a single blow. I would say that Resident Evil 5 helped kill it too but it had it's moments when it decided to rip off far better games in the series.

Leon's campaign is arguably mid-tier, though. Chris' is the best, since it has the most cohesive design--it makes effective use of the new game mechanics in particular--and the best storytelling the series has ever seen, but Leon's campaign suffers from trying to be atmospheric at the cost of gameplay. I'd rank them Chris > Ada > Jake > Leon.

Gaiden isn't canon, but I don't see why the others wouldn't be. Survivour is referenced in Zero after all.

If the spot of "worst installment" is confined to the main series, then I could see RE6 taking it, but "main series" hasn't been used. Also iffy about what counts as a "main series" installment in a sense - Code: Veronica and Revelations are usually counted within the main series, even though they lack numbers and at least in Code: Veronica, it's very much a side story.

I don't know if this first-person angle is the only one available, but if it is, that's gonna throw a lot of people very far off. Almost all of my friends who play RE and it's later, less-well received iterations like the third person and are going to be upset by this. And these friends are die hard RE fans, who still play RE6 up to this day.

I actually count myself as one of them, as I really enjoyed RE6 (come at me bro, flame shield on etc etc). Dunno about this trailer though. It doesn't seem very RE, and I started to enjoy the less stealthy elements of RE games as of late. This looks like it could be more of the modern survival horror, running away from stuff constantly type deal (Outlast, Alien Isolation, etc). Anyways it's just a trailer, so I'll reserve further judgement until I know more. Condemned was freakin' awesome though, so I wouldn't mind a bit more of that type of gameplay, atmosphere and creepy factor.

As opposed to drastic change as I am, that ship has already sailed with Resident Evil. I have to say now after spending some time with the demo that this is the best Resident Evil has been for over a decade. It's a good choice after the abysmal RE6.

Is this really it?! This is going to be the new mainline Resident Evil?!

So instead of the lame attempt at incorperating all action game clich?s with RE6, they're now just doing a half-assed first-person spookhouse game. How bloody original and refreshing after 5 years worth of first-person indie horror crap.

Here I thought I couldn't get any more disappointed in this studio.
