Well I'm gonna say it ..

OUTBREAK (and Outbreak File 2)

If you were ever lucky enough to play it multiplayer ... goddamn. #5 had the multiplayer element, but was, sadly, about as scary as Blue's fucking Clues. What's that? A big zombie? Well I'll just use *six* of the grenades I happen to carry. If that doesn't work, I'll just unload 60 automatic rounds into him. Pfft.

The multiplayer of Outbreak was great. You had back up .. but Jesus it was still scary. That damned wormy-thing in the hospital ? #5 was basically a 3-hr action version of that map.

EDIT: And some one the endings were a bit more poignant that anything else in RE. I remember playing through the Raccoon City University map on Outbreak (file 1). Found a cure for the T-Virus, chased by a Tyrant throughout the university accompanied by a waitress, a subway driver, and myself (a plumber); our waitress friend was ripped in half by the Tyrant. Myself and the subway driver fought a desperate battle against the Tyrant. We're not soldiers. We're not international men of mystery (with 'Danger' as our middle names!). I'm a plumber, and he's a train driver. WTF are we gonna do against a Tyrant ? We won ... but were too late. Ourselves, and the T-Virus antigen, were obliterated in the nuclear strike that wiped Raccoon City off the map.

My favorite is the remake of RE1 on the gamecube and wii. It really is the definitive resident evil game; it's perfect. RE0, RE2 and RE3 are equally good. RE4, while waaaay different from the rest of the series, is a damn good game. I can't speak for RE5 though. I bought it for xbox360 and just could NOT get the controls down, which is weird because I've beaten RE4 on gamecube about 10 times lol.

Much like call of duty, 4 is the only resident evil game you should play unless you are a fan of the Genre. Come to think of it, much like Star Trek movies, the even numbered ones seem to be the best ones (from what I've heard anyway).

I really only like 4 and 5 to be honest.
Excited about 6 since it looks like an even better 4 but I just don't like the survival horror controls.
To stiff and just... bleh. It's always boring and people don't bloody move like that!!!!

I didn't like 0. Leeches seemed like an odd design choice.

REmake is good. 2 is great. 3 was decent, but you can skip that. Code Veronica X is considered among the best in the series. RE 4 is an absolute must own, especially the Wii version.

Play 5 at your own discretion. The game-play itself is alright, but it's not a horror game.

I am not the best person to ask as I am a self-confessed fanatic of the series (I own Survivor 2 for godsakes).

I'd say for a non-fan that Resident Evil 4 would be the go to entry in the series. If you want to sample the classic approach then play the REMake. If you want true classic then play Resident Evil 2.

Really I'd say just 2 & 4, see how much you like it (and how much you like Leon) and go on from there.

They really should just touch up Resident Evil 4 every few years and rerelease it. I mean they do that already, but it's a good enough game that they're right in doing so.

Yeah, the rest of the series is just not that good.

It depends on what you're looking for in the series. If you want really good survival horror and don't mind Inception-esq key hunting (ie: find the key to unlock parts 1 - 3 of the key you need to progress) then go for one of the first three (in order of my personal favorites: 2, 3 and, 1)

As for the original Resident Evil, I would hold off on it until you can get the original (or Director's Cut) and the re-make on the GC/Wii so as to compare/contrast.

I've never played 4 but I enjoyed 5 mainly because of how easy it is to break. 5 isn't survival horror, it's action with a horror aesthetic unless of course you fear stupid AI allies who waste your best healing items on paper-cuts and, refuse to use weapons other than the pistol until you take that thing away.

I tried a demo of Revelations and disliked it personally so take that with a grain of salt if you want.

I've played 1, 2, 4 and 5. The best one by far was 4, I had it for the Wii aswell, but it just seemed to work well :) enjoy.

I would say RE1 remake is essential since it was more survival horror although there were bouts of annoyance with oh...I needed THAT item from the chest...>-> (looks back at zombie infested house and handgun with 5 bullets). 2 and 3 are easier than the first plus you have less of an annoyance from items. 4 is a radical change from survival to action with ammo a plenty and less horror due to having ammo. That said it is still a good game. 5...well 5 isn't BAD bad but it could be a lot better and your partner is a moron who uses first aid sprays on little bo-bo's (use a herb goddamnit). But it is more fun having a mate doing the coop with.

Also out of curiosity hands up those who've played original 1st game and were terrified when the hunter was introduced and survived 1st shotgun blast to the face.

I'd say most of them. It really comes down to taste I suppose, but if I had to choose I would pick 2,3,4,5 and revelations.

In short: 1, 2, 3, 4, and Code: Veronica.

The older ones (1, 2, 3, and Code: Veronica) are puzzle-oriented tank controlled, fixed camera survival horror games. I love them. Though if you want play the first one, see if you can get the Gamecube remake. Better in every regard.

Zero is done in the older style, but has a two-player focus (one is AI, and you co-operate with them). A fun game, and if you like the series, go for it.

Outbreak and Outbreak: File #2 are fun games, same idea as the earlier ones, but are done in short missions and designed for online play. Since the servers are disconnected, this is not possible. The AI is terrible, so you have to be DAMNED good to finish them. Even then, that might not be possible.

RE4 is great, though it deviates from the original style - more tense than horror, has an over-the-shoulder perspective, and much more emphasis on weapon upgrades, with less on puzzles. A great game. It was a good reboot for the series.

Which brings us to 5. Pretty much an imitation of 4, but not nearly as good. (I dislike it quite a bit). If you want to play it, do it with a friend. The single player is frustrating, I'm told.

Survivor is a first person, arcade-style game. Not very good. Don't bother.

Dead Aim is a spin off, and more like RE4. A decent game, but very easy (ammo is unlimited). It switches between third person, over-the-shoulder perspective, and goes into first person for shooting. Very few puzzles.

Umbrella and Darkside Chronicles are first person rail shooters for the Wii. They pretty much just tie up lose ends in the series. Not that great. If you love the series, you might want to play them.

I haven't played Mercenaries 3D, Gaiden, Survivor 2, or Deadly Silence.

Hope that helped!

I only just discovered Resident Evil, never gave it much attention till now, but I caught one of the films a while back and now I can't get enough. Anyway, there are like 20 resident evil games, which can only mean that at least 65% of them are utter crap, so I need Escapee advice- which Resident Evil games are worth playing?!
It really comes down to this: do you prefer survival horror (huge emphasis on ammo/ health item conservation and inventory management) or action (staying mobile and controlling space)?

Also, do you have it in you to accept fixed camera angles and initially unintuitive controls?

If the answers are ACTION and NO...then start playing RE4 then move on to RE5.

If the opposite or you still want to give it a go, start playing Resident Evil Zero on the Gamecube or a backward compatible Wii then follow it up with the remake of RE1 (also GC or Wii). If at this point you still want more, I suggest you play RE3 Nemesis, followed by RE2. And if by then you are still hungry for more, play RE: Code Veronica (Code Veronica X is a PS2 and GC port of the Dreamcast original).

So:

RE 0
RE 1
RE 3
RE 2
RE: Code Veronica (X)

I would say route 2 is harder, but waaaaaaaaay more satisfying. But I'm biased in favor of survival horror so...

EDIT: RE2 and 3 are both set in Raccoon City and the games overlap in time to an extent. It is best graphically represented by: [RE2], with the brackets being RE3. It's just that RE3 has you play as one of the characters from RE1, whereas RE2 introduces two new characters. The RE1 character and RE2 characters never meet each other though.

At the end of RE3 Raccoon City is completely destroyed though. Maybe it's best if you play RE3 to the point where RE2 starts, then play through the whole of RE2 and then finish with RE3.

Of all of the Resident Evil games, there are only a small number worth actually playing.
The original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Revelations. The rest of them are really only for the hardcore fans. If these titles get you hooked, then by all means check out the rest of them.

However, avoid Resident Evil 5 like the plague. It really is a terrible game, with really high production values.
