Except the whole story of the franchise sucks anyway (not one of Resident evil's strong points).

Resident evil 3 is a great game, in fact I'll go as far as to say it's my favourite.

The Resident evil remake is also very good, and it is worth picking up if you have a cube (and even if you don't, you should pick up the cube cheaply just for this game alone, it's well worth it trust me).

Get a Gamecube (they're dirt cheap these days). It has all the "old school" RE's: Remake (or simply, Resident Evil. Very nice graphics compared to the PSX original), Zero, RE2, RE3, Code Veronica X and the "new school" RE4.

Definitely don't miss out on Remake and RE4.

The Resident Evil 1 remake on gamecube is the pinnacle of the series and is the best starting point storywise. They also sell it for wii but the gamecube original is cheaper. It really is a fantastic game.

While 3 (Nemesis) doesn't add a whole lot to the story, its very much in a similar vein to 2 (the best in the series) and is really well worth a playthrough.

I love Resident evil 2 the most. Mainly because of the police station setting and OST.
and guess what...the game, and the soundtrack could have been much better.

The final version of Resident evil 2 was a rushed job, because the creator was unsatisfied with the original vision (so literally, over half the game was scrapped. The lab part stayed mostly intact). When it was scrapped, it was 80% completed.

It's a shame that the beta hasn't been released on the net by someone. I know, i would chop my own fingers off to play it.

I know about RE 1.5 and wanna play it as well, it looked brilliant. Compared to the others that were released, i prefer RE2.

This is true, but myself I didn't really care that much for nemesis. I liked some of the things it added to the game over 2, I just didn't like dealing with Nemesis any more than Tyrant from 2B.

alright if you want to play the games in order of story line here it is:
Resident Evil 0 (Gamecube, Wii)
Resident Evil 1 {Remake} (Gamecube, Wii)
Resident Evil 2 (PSx, PSN, PC, Dreamcast, Gamecube)
Resident Evil 3 (PSx, PSN, PC, Dreamcast, Gamecube)
Resident Evil: Code Veronica (Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube)
Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube, PS2, Wii, PC)
Resident Evil 5 (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)

All the other RE games are just spin-offs that rarely have to do with the main storyline. If you want the full experience of this series, I strongly suggest playing them in this order. Also 2, 3, and Code Veronica for the Gamecube might cost you a lil more since they are slightly harder to find.

Depends: what do you want?
Do you want an action adventure game with horror elements? Do you want a game that is so frightening that you can't play for more than 3 minutes at a time? Do you just like zombies in general?
I guess I'm kind of biased towards Silent Hill, but I've played RE4 (finished it)and the remake of the original (Can't figure out what I'm supposed to be doing, so I'm stuck)
RE4 is more of a fun action packed adventure game, while the remake is a bit more difficult to play (the controls hurt my brain), but the atmosphere is a bit better than RE4's.
I can only really give my oppinions on those 2, sorry.
Off Topic: How dare you insult Doom's graphics in my presence!

Listen to this man. As someone who has played pretty much RE ever made and has been a fan since launch day of the original RE I can tell you this is an excellent game to start with.

Yo guys,
I recently looked into the series, and it looks quite nice (or so I think). I'd like to step into this series, but I have no idea which game to start with. Any suggestions? Which one do you think is the best? Should I actually not play these games?

Find out in the next episode!

I'd love to hear your opinion on this one.
As a long time die hard Resident Evil Fan, I feel obligated to get you going on the right foot. But the journey is long, and there are many games to play. Not all the play styles are the same, and there may be some "totally old" graphics to swallow along the way. In the end of this post, I will give you an ordered list.

"But why do I have to play all these games that are so old?" I'll tell you; because each one references the last in some way. In the most recent release, all the major plot points are wrapped up, and it's fairly satisfying if you've been following the series from the start.

The Gamecube had two Resident Evils of worth; Resident Evil REmake, and Resident Evil Zero. RE:REmake is a graphical remastering of the PS1 version. New areas are added to the environment, play modes, weapons, and difficulties. It is my favorite Resident Evil to date. RE:Zero is a prequel, and follows one of the supporting characters from the first game. It details the history of the infamous Umbrella Corp, and what has lead their research to this point, and the fate of one of its primary founders. I do not care for this paticular Resident Evil, because I feel it stretches the story of the beginning incidents thin, and lessens the value of the original (and remake) game. I'd still play it, because the story comes into play later in the series.

The PSN has RE2, which many (not me) hail as the greatest of the series. When RE1 introduced Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, RE2 introduces the next batch of RE superstars; Leon S Kennedy, and Clair Redfield, Chris's sister. RE2 picks up a few months after the first, and details the fate of Raccoon City. RE3 happens at the same time as RE2, and follows Jills escape from the city. This is my 2nd favorite RE game because of NEMESIS.

On the ps2 (and ps3 if you're lucky to have a backwards compatible version) there's Resident Evil: Code Veronica. It was originally a Dreamcast exclusive. This game follows Clair and Chris, details more history of Umbrella and its founders. It's ended with what may have been the beginning of the series most badass villain moments, leading to his progressing fame in the series (shh, not telling who, but, it's not hard to find out).

And then there's Resident Evil 4. Also, "And now for something completely different." It follows Leon S Kennedy, now certified badass, and has absolutely NOTHING to do with previous itterations of the series other than the characters and their motivations. Still worth playing, and the story will be important in RE5.

Next up, RE5. The most recent RE, and plays like RE4. It ties up ALL the loose ends, pays homage to all the games, and brings everything to a satisfying close.

Order to play;
(I'll list it's original platform so you have an idea of its graphical abilities.)

Resident Evil (PS:One) // or Resident Evil: REmake (Gamecube)
Resident Evil 2 (PS:One)
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (PS:One)
Resident Evil Zero (Gamecube)
Resident Evil: Code Veronica (Dreamcast/PS2)
Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube)
Resident Evil 5 (ps3/360)

There are more Resident Evil games out there, but these are the ones worth playing. The others are... not. If you want a quick once over for story and don't want to play that many games, the Wii has two rail shooters that put you in the hot seat and let you watch its story unfold while you House-of-the-Dead zombies away. I have not played these, so I can't attest to their value.

If you want to play Resident Evil and occasionally soil your pants, play 0, 1(original or remake if you wanna see prettier graphics), 2 and 3...and maybe Code Veronica I guess...a little. If you want a generic shooter with the name Resident Evil stuck on the case and if you like killing black and hispanic people who have eaten something that gave them worms, then play Resident Evil 4 and 5. Afterwards take your pick on which series to call Resident Evil and stick with it.

I've played and stuck with the Resident Evil ever since its first incarnation, so let me say it's really nice to come across someone who hasn't played them, but wants to.

mudE13 mentioned the chronological order of the games, but I don't recommend playing them in that order. The mystique associated with playing a prequel and seeing everything fall into place is lost if you play it first.

I recommend starting with the GameCube remake of Resident Evil. It is one of the few truly frightening games, and one of the even fewer genuine survival horrors. But, I will offer a word of warning before you play it: it is not an easy game, and even less so if you are not familiar with survival horror. The game will absolutely not hold your hand and tell you where to go next. Ammo is in tremendously short supply and enemies will soak up tons of it. You will, on many occasions, be forced to decide between attempting to fight an enemy you probably can't kill or fleeing from an enemy you probably can't outrun. It is dreadfully unforgiving, and you'll either love it or hate it for this. Additionally, the controls will take a lot of getting used to for a newcomer, and the game won't give you a chance to do so.

After that, pick up Resident Evil 2. It's arguably the best of the first generation Resident Evil games, and has a shocking amount of content for a game released in its day. The split perspective scenarios, while old hat by today's standards, were unheard of in its time. It's worth playing just to see to see the origin of something that has become commonplace in modern gaming, if you can suffer the dreadful graphics.

Resident Evil 3 isn't necessary unless you're really interested in the plot. It was initially to be a side story, while Code Veronica was to be the true sequel. It essentially tells the story of what happened to Jill Valentine (one of the first game's two stars) during the events of Resident Evil 2. It also marked the series' first steps towards becoming a more action-oriented game. Enemies are weaker, ammo more plentiful, the player can sustain much more damage, and so on. Unfortunately, this doesn't work particularly well, as the game's slow-paced, tank-like control system remains firmly in place.

Whether you decide to play Resident Evil 3 first or not, the next game in line to play would be Code Veronica. It's a fantastic game, although it does unfortunately mark the point where the game's plot truly went off the rails - not that it was particularly brilliant in the first place, but Code Veronica is definitely the point at which it devolved into comic book-style convolution.

At this point, I recommend returning to play Resident Evil Zero. It plays much like the remake of the first game, but with the addition of a character-switching system. It isn't quite as good or as frightening as REmake, nor are the puzzles as tight, but it's a good game in its own right. Just be prepared for mountainous frustration when coming up against the leech-man enemies - they're an interesting concept for an enemy that's shoehorned into a game that doesn't have the right control system to deal with them.

At this point, it doesn't really matter whether you play Resident Evil 4 or 5 next. Resident Evil 4 is one of the greatest games of the last generation and still holds up well today. It has little connection to any of the other games, and is an absolute blast to play. Resident Evil 5 attempts to tie up the loose ends from the main storyline, and falters somewhat. It also makes several unnecessary changes from RE4 that ultimately make it a worse game. It is still, however, a decent game in its own right and worth a rental if nothing else.

I hope this helps you make up your mind!

I'd try 0 or the remake of 1, if you don't like the puzzles/play style just skip to 5 if you can get someone to play with you, the AI is just terrible, or go to 4.
It really depends what kind of gamer you are, I personally have a hard time to play older games because I like fluidity in controls and mechanics, its like being spoiled by gourmet food and then having to eat JELLO, yea JELLO is great and I'd love it alone, but I'm spoiled by the gourmet food.

I would advise taking a look at the order they came out in and start from there. Failing that do the obvious and start with 1 and work your way through to 5 then you could do all the ones that came on the side like Survivor, Zero etc.

It truly is an excellent series. Old graphics and totally amazing (!) voice acting. But it's just hilarious to listen to. Defo worth your time x

I like watching these "What could have been" bits of RE's that never were. :) Like RE 3.5 that would have taken the series down a paranormal angle. The makers were determined to do something different with the series at this point, and it shows!

Interesting tidbit; RE 1.5 had an infection value and clothes that degraded as you got mauled. RE 3.5 also had something similar. They kept wanting to integrate this feature, but it never saw the light of a released game. The closest thing was PS2's RE: Outbreak. (For anyone not familiar, it was basically the original Left 4 Dead, but it played like an RE game.)

Don't want to forget a clip!

This is why I love the Remake so much. :) It was true to the original, and really honored the fact that the original RE1 began Survival Horror in video games. Early Silent Hill aside, there hasn't been a decent console survival horror since the REmake, let alone a survival horror Resident Evil. Though, the RE5 DLC that had Jill and Chris running through the Spencer Estate was pretty chilling, and proof they [em]could have done a proper survival horror[/em] with that engine rather than an all out action free for all.

I was a master of the classic controls. I liked the "tank" play style. :) The only complaint I ever had was the inability to move and shoot at the same time.
