So yesterday around 2:25 pm we had to put my 18 year old cat to sleep due to complications from a throat tumor. It shocked me when I picked her up after the injection to find how limp she already was. She was my friend when I was younger at a time I really didn't have any. I've had a good cry and realize how quite it is around here without her.

Enough about my problems I wasn't to hear about yours: Have you ever had to put a pet to sleep,Why, and how did you deal with it?

Quick Edit: If you had them put down where you there when they did it?

Never had to put any of my own pets to sleep... they all just died... poor cats...
I adore cats, so cute, but so short-lived... I miss them all... just thinking about them brings a tear to my eye...

My childhood dog, Jenny, a springer spaniel. Bloody beautiful dog, she was old and had kidney problems. There was a surgery they could do, but there was a very low success rate. It was expensive, but hell, my grandfather loved that dog so much that he offered to pay. My parents decided against it. She had suffered enough. R.I.P. Jenny, you were bloody awesome. My other 2 dogs, one was a puppy when Jenny died, she's getting on a bit now but she still has alot of life in her, especially when we got a new puppy a few years back, that perked her up. Teaching them damn kids what' what.

The unconditional love a dog gives. The best kind.

My first and only cat dying was such a horrible thing to me that I never want to love anyone again. It was too hard on me and I am too fragile for it. I realise I to have have a taste for losing loved ones; to the degree where the flavour is poison to the tongue.

I wrote this 14,000 word weblog entry the day it happened...

...honestly my life is still affected by that moment in my life and it probably will stain me until I die.

The short is she had a kidney issue, and yes I was in the room...

After reading this I ran to my cat and spent 5 minutes petting her.

OT: My other cat was put to sleep because she was like 20. It was her time. I was only 4. I remember my mom just saying she was sick and bringing her to the vet. I hounded her for a week about when Sushi (the cat) was getting back. And then she finally told me.

Great now I'm all depressed.

Yes, my cat. I had to rush him to the emergency room because his back legs stopped working. They said he had thrown a clot and was in heart failure. He was twelve, but he was a large breed of cat and from what I gather, they have these types of issues. They administered the injection while I petted him. :(

This thread is depressing. I'm going to go post in that soft or hard thread again. :(

I have had an assload of pets die on my watch. First of which were three of my dogs. One had a tumor and had to be put down, the others were put down by my ***** aunt.

Then, I had a hermit crab who died. Then a budgie who got killed by her cage-mate, and finally 3 fire-bellied toads died, in an extremely confusing way. Each died with a white bump coming out of where their tailbone was.

So yeah.. Death sucks. That's why I don't want anymore pets.

My dog was put to sleep. Tam. He was a scruffy little Terrier with a brown face and black and grey body who used to sit on the stairs and watch the road out the window all day. He used to love running around with other dogs or lying low in the grass and biting their ankles as they ran past. He was always attacking kites. He hated the postman. I loved him.

Thinking about him brings tears to my eyes.

I wouldn't put my pet to sleep because of a sickness, I view euthanasia as murder unless consent is given, and animals cannot give consent.
No mercy then? Pain and suffering is good then?

I grew up in Lusaka, Zambia where the traffic is third world crazy and stray cats are everywhere. I took care of quite a few strays in my childhood with the help and friends and cousins and my sister. I never put any one of them to sleep but that's because I never had to...the cars did it for me...4 sweet cats murdered right in front of me basically

Never had to put a pet to sleep, but I was completely crushed when my cat died.

Why did the only thing that was good in this household have to leave me...

My sister threw my hamster down the stairs. I stayed up all night making sure it didn't move around to much or get stuck in the tubes before it was put to sleep the next morning. Cried for hours and still resent my sister.
