Retail games needing Disc 2 to play

So I'm thinking about doing a fresh run through Dragon Age 2 with a new class and cant find the game disc for the life of me. I use steam for most of my games and its pretty convenient that all my games are lined up and completely installed on my pc without needing a losable CD-rom. Unfortunately my copy of DA 2 is retail.

I'm getting ready to start a thread here about why games on steam are fully installed but games sold through retail still require the CD to play. For the heck of it I activate Dragons Age from my desk top fully expecting an "insert disc 2" requirement. Surprise! The game worked without asking for a game disc. I quickly checked this out on the Witcher 2 and Mass Effect 2. Witcher 2 worked without a game disc. Mass effect required disc 2. It looks like the newer games don't ask for a disc once installed. I hope this feature sticks. It sucks lugging multiple cd's back and forth. I gotta ask what took so long :p

DA2 doesn't require a disk to run. At least my retail copy doesn't...

Origins requires it though. As does ME2. And Bad Company 2. Which is annoying as hell. I already bought the games, I proved I own them by giving you my money, WHY ARE YOU ASKING ME TO PROVE MYSELF AGAIN?!

Man, I can't remember the last time I used my optical drive. I only get my games from Steam, so I never use CD/DVDs to play games, and I watch DVDs on my PS3. I think I might have ripped a CD or something, maybe. Even then though, I get most of my music online.

Physical media is so incredibly anachronistic it isn't funny.

This is why when I have a game that needs the disk to run I load up my ripping software and make a .iso out of the disk. I then store the disk itself somewhere safe and the .isos in a folder specifically for games that need a CD/DVD to run, that usually solves my problem.

I will agree that for PC games requiring the disk is stupid as hell though.

Mild tangent warning!

In all honesty I can't understand why people buy games off Steam other than during sales. You can get them quite a bit cheaper, posted out as a physical copy and don't use any bandwidth. PC games drop in price so quick it's amazing!

Nothing for nothing, but I prefer to have a hard-copy of my games. Simple reason is that if my computer goes down (assuming it's not a game that links to or is downloaded from Steam), I might lose my save, but I can just reinstall it and play it over. That said, if the servers for Steam or like-minded software (I'm looking at you "Games for Windows" >.<) went down, you can't even play your games.

yea, I know, it's all "what-if's", but I've learned that even in this ages, the slightest malfunction can completely mess up your computer. It's nice to have it all on a convenient CD that I can easily carry and use.

I agree though that disc checks are out of date. I don't know any major games for PCs that require them any more...

Shogun 2. Disk 2 is purely for installation.

I remember i corrupted Red Alert 2 AND Yuri's Revenge. Still cant play em. ARGH!

I don't rate steam though, it's great for finding out whats out but tbh, its just an additional program that exists to facilitate. Great idea, but I just don't like having the adverts in my face everytime i close down, and the fact that I don't know how long dlc will take to download + install. grr

If only there were corners of the internet where one could obtain files that would allow you to bypass copy protection...[footnote]This is purely hypothetical, of course.[/footnote]

Also, steam is a form of copy protection.

Some games can be registered through your CD key, and then downloaded and played via Steam. It doesn't look like you can do this with DA2 (yet).

The Witcher devs removed ALL DRM about a week after they released the game. This is specifically why I bought that game.

Yeah. The sales can be astounding. I got Civ V for like 12 bucks.

Wait; thinking about it, isn't DA2 an EA game? Isn't it linked into an Origin account such that he can download it from there?

Yea, it's an EA game. EA doesnt bow to the Valve. Get origin, it's better than steam. Don't pay Valve employees' next vacation.

Will that work with games that require Steam though? And is there anyway that they might think it's pirating or something? I'm curious, I don't pirate or anything, but I've been thinking about doing that so I can load up all my games instantly on my laptop.

I'll be honest, I sorta miss when games came on more than one disc. Compare Ape Escape to FFVII. Look at the former. You pick it up, lightweight, put it in, have fun, put it away. Now, when I first picked up FFVII from my brother's collection of games, I just lifted the sucker for a minute. When you pick up a game that massive, you know you are about to play an epic of unparalled scope and ambission.

I think once you've activated the game through Steam you should just be able to download them to any computer that you're logged in on. If that isn't the case I've no idea how physical games on Steam work, the last physical PC game (that needs Steam) I bought was Half Life...

I have New Vegas and it's like that, I wish you could just activate it to where you could download it from Steam. I mean, you have to go through Steam anyway...
