If you can find it get Blast Corps (or Blast Dozer, can't remember which territories used which name), a Gem from back in the days when everything Rare produced was gold.

Space Station Silicon Valley was also a little gem, but might be quite rare, and I'd recommend Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (actual game title) for a fun action rpg with a rather weird (Japanese) sense of humour and some hilarious songs.

-banjo-kazooie and possibly tooie, but i never played the second, really have to buy it
-Mario kart 64
-Super Mario 64, but if you have a ds, you could just get it on that
-Paper mario (Get it now!)
-Bomberman 64 (if you're thinking of having a few friends over for some multiplayer)
-Diddy kong racing
-Pokemon stadium, but only if you like pokemon obviously (can't believe i just put that)
-WWf no mercy
-Mario party 2 (again if you want a good multiplayer)

So many more, but i just never got them all, and most of the other good ones are mentioned on here anyway.

Conker's bad fur day! It's THE N64 game! Fun gameplay with everything from shooting to platforming and an entertaining story.

I have actually kept track of this, and I believe I have played the original super smash brothers for close to 200 hours. Although, I think that relied heavily on the people I played with.

Oh, not to mention Squirrels vs Tediz (In response to the many people suggesting Bad Fur Day).

The N64...retro; oh my god, I feel so old! *hugs his N64* Shhh, it's okay they didn't mean it.

Nothing to add to the list that hasn't already been said sadly; all the greats are here far as I can see.

pokemon snap is really fun, although quite short. (I really wish there was a sequel to it)

Doom 64 was pretty good. It was Doom 3's atmosphere with Doom II's sense of over the top fun.

Ahhh, the N64. Now that brings back memories. It was the first Nintendo console I owned, having bought it myself back when I was in junior high (prior to that I had to rely on the neighbor kid across the street). Definitely had its share of excellent games.

Here's some titles I'd definitely recommend:

*Super Smash Bros. Best "casual" fighting game series out there, in my humble opinion. The N64 version might lack many of the characters and features the later games have, but it makes up for it with the crowd's sheer enthusiasm. Seriously, the spectators are WAY more into the fights than in Melee or Brawl, and their roars and chants really get you psyched. Invite three friends over and revel in the manic chaos that unfolds.

*Mario Kart 64. Probably my favorite Mario Kart game. Again, invite some friends over and play a few Vs. and Battle rounds. I can guarantee you'll have a blast.

*Paper Mario. I'm probably going to catch some flak for what I'm about to say, but I like this game better than Super Mario RPG. In fact, it ranks in my top 5 RPGs of all time. Don't let its light and whimsical presentation scare you off. It combines light turn-based battle mechanics with old-school Mario sidescrolling and jumping elements to make one hell of a ride. The dialogue is often amusing or downright hilarious as well.

*Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. While not as deep or challenging as the X-Wing series of games, Rogue Squadron is a very enjoyable arcade-style flight game. This is set firmly in the "classic trilogy" era, so no Jar Jar Binks, midichlorians or whiny ***** Anakin here. When you're done with the game, you can go back and try to improve your score to unlock bonus missions and new vehicles to use. There's also lots of codes that do all sorts of strange and awesome stuff, from altering the main menu screen to allowing you to fly a Buick that could shoot cluster missiles.

*Star Fox 64. "Do a barrel roll!" This mostly on-rails flight shooter is a classic. It's gloriously campy in many respects, fully embracing the cliches and tropes of other sci-fi series. The voice acting is set firmly in the "so bad it's good" realm, spawning many phrases that have become immortalized as internet memes. Most importantly, it's a blast to play.

*Super Mario 64. I probably don't even need to mention this one, but here it is. Before Banjo-Kazooie and Ocarina of Time this was THE flagship title for the system. It still holds up surprisingly well to this day (aside for the occasional frustrating camera issues).

*Banjo-Kazooie. One of Rare's shining achievements back when it could practically do no wrong, this is a very enjoyable platformer. The levels were huge and varied, and the game as a whole was very lengthy (in a good way). One caveat though: this game gets REALLY hard towards the end.

Space Station Silicon Valley was made by DMA--who later made GTAIII--and is an incredibly good platformer.
Oh hey, someone else who knows about this game!
Yeah, Space Station: Silicon Valley is awesome. You control all sorts of robotic animals, each with their own special abilities and weapons. It has a somewhat subversive, almost gallows humor at times, and some of the animals are just plain weird, like a helicopter rabbit and a hyena that kills enemies by getting them to laugh themselves to death. It might be hard to find nowadays though, as it was pretty obscure even when it was new.

Those are just a few suggestions for you.

Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie. Rayman 2. Super Mario 64. Majora's Mask. Paper Mario. Perfect Dark. That should keep you occupied for a while.

Things I forgot- Star Fox 64, Donkey Kong 64, Super Smash Brothers, Yoshi's Story, Diddy Kong Racing.
All of these plus maybe Mario Kart and you should be good to go.

Edit: Also, if you like the old Pokemon games, try and find Pokemon Stadium. I freaking loved that game, and if you have an old gameboy pocket or colour you can connect them.

Going through my N64 games, these are the ones that I remember being particularly good:

Star Wars Episode I Racer
Star Wars Rogue Squadron
Glover
Perfect Dark
Micro Machines 64 Turbo
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Jet Force Gemini (Also one of my favourite N64 games, has a dog that gets some tank armour)
Extreme G (absolutely amazing music, one of my favourite N64 games)
Top Gear Rally (not too sure about this one)
Blast Corps
Tetrisphere (not too sure about this one either)
Banjo-Kazooie
Diddy Kong Racing
Donkey Kong 64

All UK titles

Some of these I might remember being good due to nostalgia, and they might actually be crap. I know there's loads that are amazing that I just don't have on N64 (Majora's Mask, Banjo-Tooie etc.)

Perfect Dark should be priority 1. I cannot emphasize that enough.
Whys that?
It's the spiritual successor to Goldeneye. Anything Goldeneye did, Perfect Dark did better, Goldeneye just wins by virtue of doing it first. Not to mention all the new features. This sounds standard now, but back in the day, the fact that Perfect Dark had voiced cutscenes, secondary features on every weapon, and an actually pretty decent story involving aliens was mindblowing. Of course, your N64 needs an expansion pack to play it. If you can't get that, they remade it for the XBLA, with the only difference being new skins.

Also, some so-obvious-I-forgot-to-mention-them options, Mario 64 , Super Smash Brothers, and Star Fox 64 are must haves, though not as much as Perfect Dark.

Oh, one last thing. Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. Largest, most sprawling levels I have ever seen in a linear FPS. Absolutely incredibly fun. Lots of gore. Truth be told, I never actually beat it without cheats, there was always some obscure hidden objective I could never find, but it's still insanely fun.

Super Mario 64, my personal favorite game of all time, is a definite recommendation. Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros., Star Fox 64, Majora's Mask, Pokémon Stadium/2/Snap, Kirby 64, Paper Mario, and Banjo Kazooie/Tooie are all fantastic titles as well.

This was exactly my reaction.

...I'm not that old... am I...?

Anyways, as the person I quoted said, all the greats have already been said, but I'll reiterate that you should get Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, Majora's Mask, and Super Smash Bros, if nothing else. All classics, all amazingly fun.

Enjoy the N64!

Rocket: Robot On Wheels. It was a decent Mario 64 esque platformer praised at the time for its physics engine. It's somewhat historically important because it was developed by Sucker Punch studios before Sly Cooper and Infamous. I remember it being fun, but I never finished it. One stage had too many fetch quests. It also has a pretty red cartridge.

Also, get Harvest Moon 64 if you can. The farm simulator series has always been incredibly addicting and I'm pretty sure this was the best one. The textures and framerate were shit, but it didn't matter. The relationships mechanics and farming were at their most accessible and at their most complex.

Star Wars Shadows of the Empire was a launch title that got a lot of shit for it's floaty controls, but I really dug the dark dingy vibe to the whole thing. And it set in motion Rogue Squadron a few years later.
