Review Wars
Disclaimer: This is not an official feature of the Escapist magazine or website, please message me with any questions or comments.
Welcome, one and all, to the unofficial Review Wars; a place where the review competitions never end! A coliseum where the pen truly is mightier than the sword. So crank up that inspirational music, take out your thesaurus and prepare to mince words.
For the most part, here's the basic way things will go down:
1. Reviewers will request a competition or sign up for an upcoming arranged competition.
2. Competitions will take place over the course of two weeks, two competitions will be allowed to overlap during any one week period.
3. Reviewers will have one week to submit their reviews to the supervisor.
4. The supervisor will distribute the reviews to volunteer judges, who will then have one week to judge the reviews based on a 25 point rubric.
5. Results will be posted as soon as they're gathered, barring any complications.
RULES & GUIDELINES
I. Entering a Competition
II. Scheduling
III. Writing a Review
IV. Judging and Scoring
V. Miscellaneous
AVAILABLE POSITIONS
I am seeking assistance with maintaining this thread, and at the moment have two types of positions available:
Competition Supervisor - Competition supervisors will help arrange competitions and take competition requests. They will collect reviews and distribute them to the judges, and then collect the scores from judges.
Regular Judge - A regular judge does not need to be available for every competition, but will be volunteering to receive a PM whenever judges are needed.
Also, feel free to submit a banner for this thread, no matter which banner I use, all submissions will receive credit in the acknowledgments.

RULES & GUIDELINES
I. Entering a Competition
a. There will be three types of competitions: event, requested, and arranged.
b. An event competition is simply a competition held without first receiving a request and is open to all reviewers. Reviewers must post on this thread or send a private message requesting to join the competition before the registration deadline in the competition schedule in order to compete.
c. A requested competition is one that two or more members arrange on their own, and then submit a proposal for on either this thread or through private messages. Currently there is no proposal format, and arrangements will be made through a dialogue. Requested competitions will be limited to those who made the request.
d. An arranged competition is a combination of the previous two types. Reviewers are encouraged to post or private message in things they'd be interested in reviewing for a competition. When two or more of these interests match up, we'll send a proposal to the reviewers for a competition. If an agreement can be reached, the competition will be arranged. The competition will only be open if it is mutually agreed to by the original competitors.

II. Scheduling
a. All requested and arranged competitions will be held in the order they were arranged. However, event competitions will take precedence over both types.
b. The writing and judging phases of most competitions will be one week each. In most cases, the writing phase will take place during the judging phase of the previous competition.
c. If a competition is rescheduled by mutual request, it will be dropped to the bottom of the queue.

III. Writing a Review
a. All reviews must be written. Apart from that, however, the only restrictions on things to review and review formats are those set for each individual competition.
b. Requested competitions must have guidelines agreed upon by the competitors. If no mutual agreement can be reached, the guidelines are the same as those below.
c. Default writing guidelines for arranged competitions include a 500-1500 word limit, a standard essay format, and no visuals.

IV. Judging and Scoring
a. The amount of judges will vary from 3-5 depending on the amount of competitors and the number of judges available.
b. Judges will score reviews on 5 categories worth 5 points each, with a rubric that can be seen here [http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=ddknc3j4_1fjntbrfg].
c. Judges may comment on whatever they like, but are required to do so for any category scored lower than a 3.
d. Scores are averaged based on final totals.
e. All reviews and scores will be archived for possible upcoming features.

It's pretty easy to forget how things start. Can you remember a day where 3D games were the minority? I remember those days, and I look back on them very fondly. I had hoped I was not alone, therefore decided why not combine my favorite hobbies? So, in honor of that, I want a review contest about old games.
[HEADING=3]Information[/HEADING]:
A 500 - 1,500 word review on a game that came on or before the year 1991.
[HEADING=3]Entry Rules[/HEADING]:
[li]Must submit interest by 11:59 (GMT) on May 5th.[/li]
[li]Must submit articles by 11:59 (GMT) on May 15th.[/li]
[li]Room for52 other judges. [small]Will admit on a first come, first serve basis.[/small][/li]
[li]Reviews can be for any platform, including arcades, PCs, or home consoles.[/li]
[li]Reviews must be video games.[/li]
[li]Only one review per entrant.[/li]
[HEADING=3]Judge Information[/HEADING]:
Note, that judges will be required to make notes for every review read, will score to the contest's criteria, and will not be told whose review is whose until the end of the contest.
Judges: NewClassic, Labyrinth, Danzorz, ultimatechance,
Participants: Inverse Skies, The Necroswanson, Lord Krunk, Scotth266, Sighh, Dirk45, Hey Joe,

Q: Must the games be played on the original console, or is emulation acceptable?
A: Either will work, though keep in mind emulation rarely reflects the original audio correctly.
