Rey is Phasma's daughter.

Each time I see TFA, the more I can see Rey is not related to the Solos or Skywalkers. Even Maz says that her parents are never coming back for her, that she believes that they are dead. 'Don't look to the past, that is gone.' But that Luke could be her chance to belong to a family in the future. No one has put forth that she could be a romantic interest for Luke.

Phasma having a small part in the first one along with her being responsible for the Death Star getting destroyed due to interference from Han Solo mimics Vader from the first Star Wars.

They will probably have Phasma give a big reveal in the next movie, about having to hide her child to keep her from being drafted by the First Order, and ended up serving herself. She also leads the stormtroopers in invading the village at the start of the movie, like Vader did on Leia's ship.

She has a strong connection to the Force, along with being a great pilot, and tech savvy. Snoke (Palpatine?) really wants to get a hold of her, probably to replace Kylo Ren.

Phasma's bio states she's 35 years old, and is shown to have complete loyalty to the First Order. Unless she was REALLY young when she had Rey and somehow turned coat for no stated reason (which, if we're being fair, would be out of place in the poorly written sequel trilogy) this theory makes no sense.

Probably not. Phasma is a sideshow, like Boba Fett. I don't think Rey is Luke or Solo's daughter, though. It would be too predictable.
While it would be predictable, and also a case of spectacularly bad writing, it also wouldn't be out of place for an Abrams directed/written/produced movie series.

I doubt it. Besides, they pushed her relationship with Finn a little to hard in this movie.

For the guy who straight up remade the first film? Abrams would probably think it was clever.

Having her at 17 isn't that young, Christie is nearly 40. Plus, you know, frequent lightspeed travel vs Rey sitting on the same planet for years. Her mate was probably killed, and she will never see her child again. Cold brutal soldier characters have been made from similar circumstances for years in fiction.

They pushed Luke and Leia being a thing really hard in the first movie as well.

That... is really stretching it. Really. This is right up there with the theory that Finn is Lando's kid, because they're both black.

That was just Lucas making things up on the go. Disney would never write itself into a corner like that. Not at this point.

No, she's Lukes. JJ wouldn't know a creative idea if all the Ancient Muses came down from on high and spent a week slowly, delicately preforming thousands of never before experienced sexual positions while cooing gentle sweet nothings into his ear while Shakespeare and Isaac Asimov get high on acid while watching Starship Troopers and writing down awesome ideas.

I mean for fucks sake he did an interview where they asked him why Mark Hamill was in all the pre-production script reading pictures that were posted despite not having a single line, and Abrams openly said it was to trick the audience into thinking Luke was actually in the movie so they'd be more likely to see it.

He is such a fuck. No way in hell Rey is anyone but Luke's daughter. Because he thinks that's really clever and we'd never think of it, like when he cast Cumberbatch as Khan, but openly lied and said 'Nope, nope! This isn't a remake of Wrath of Khan. He's...John...Harris..on...and its a totally original script with totally new ideas and lines!! I'm not a hack!!"

But what do we expect from a writer/director who watched The Phantom Menace and said "I'll show you what disappointment looks like, world! I'll make an even worse Star Wars movie!"

Eugh...I like Phasma though, or at least the way she seemed to be portrayed as this loyal footsoldier (minus meekly giving up the codes to the starkiller base..), having her be Rey's parent with the heel turn that would imply would be kinda lame.
Still it's possible though, and I've been plenty disappointed with TFA so I'm sure the sequel can find new ways to accomplish that. I'm now banking it all on Rogue 1...

This theory reminds me of Cade Skywalker.

But no way in hell. My second favorite theory is that Rey is a Kenobi. Though we all know her father is Luke.

The prevailing opinion is that she's Luke's daughter, but to be honest I'd prefer if Rey wasn't related to ANYONE we know. Star Wars already has a glaring issue of "everyone is connected" syndrome, despite taking place in a ginormous galaxy with umpteen quadrillions of sentient beings.

Weeeellll.....

I don't know if "Daisy Ridley kisses John Boyega on his forehead" can be interpreted as a sure-fire sign of romantic attraction. Finn is Rey's first real friend in forever - it could be that all she's feeling is a really close and personal sense of kinship.

That hug Rey gives Finn, once they reunite on Starkiller Base? Somehow, that struck me as evoking someone who's really, really glad to see a dear friend or a close sibling after time spent apart.

I'm thinking Rey started out as one of Luke's pupils, but Ben turning coat and joining the First Order forced him to drop her off somewhere where she wouldn't be noticed, and mostly kept safe. Emphasis on "mostly", as scavenger work doesn't feel like the safest of professions.

So Rey isn't his daughter, not in terms of blood relations - but she's probably as close as it gets.

I like the theory that Rey is a former student of Luke's with her memory altered for her protection. It would provide a connection with Luke without the cliche parent/child relationship that Star Wars has already done before. I don't really believe this is actually the case, but I like the theory.

The other theory that I've heard is that she's Han and Leia's daughter and thus gets her connection to the force through her mother. This would allow them to play up villain/hero as brother/sister, but you'd need to explain why she wasn't raised by her parents and I don't think it would really add anything of value.

I find the theory Rey is Phasma's daughter a stretch. While I'm expecting Phasma to have a much more detailed character revealed in later movies I can't see a daughter raised as an orphan as part of that.

Of course, the biggest twist would be if she's not actually related or connected to anyone from the earlier movies. Could she simply be an orphan who just happens to have a naturally strong connection to the force?

The fact that the question of what happened to her parents was raised in the movie doesn't mean that they were significant in the grand scheme of things, but I think that quite a few people would be disappointed if some explanation of why Rey was left alone on Jakku wasn't given.

For everyone who's saying that she's definitely Luke's daughter because that's just what J.J. Abrams would do, who wrote the script? How much creative control over the overall structure of the series of movies does J.J have? His name is all over The Force Awakens, of course, and he seems to have had a massive amount of creative control over it. This doesn't say how much control he has over the main storyline, and how much comes from someone like Kathleen Kennedy or those working for her.

I think Rey is Darth Vader's daughter, and he had a secret other life as a merchant on that desert planet that wasn't Tattoine. He was planning on retiring after that one last mission to turn Luke to the dark side.
