RIFT - Will it be big, or just another flop?

With World of Warcraft still holding the MMO reins, will RIFT be able to gain enough market to be an MMO giant?

Most people who play MMOs either play WoW, or have had an active subscription at some time or another. Will RIFT be able to take the WoW playerbase for their own?

What do we think RIFT will achieve? Has anybody played it?

I've spent some time with it, and the really interesting class system is, in reality, confusing and a bit of a crapshoot right now, since nobody's really played it enough to know what's an effective set of souls and what isn't.

It won't even make a dent in WoW. Nothing will. MMOs need to stop trying to take down Godzilla and just concentrate on finding an unfilled niche and claiming that.

Look, it'd take years for a game to noticeably "steal" WoW's userbase - that doesn't make it a failure if it doesn't do so, not by any stretch of the imagination.

I played it a while, it's.... bland. Interesting concept but the classes I played the ones that are supposed to sink up basically you get 3 spells that do the same thing, making it really pointless.

I don't think it's going to have any major impact on WoW at all. It'll be like Warhammer all over again. A bunch of players defect for a month, 2 tops, then go right on back to Azeroth. At least I haven't heard RIFT trying to claim themselves as the WoW-killer like some other games.

If you've played in the beta then you just commited a crime by talking about your experience. Playing requires you to accept a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) saying that you won't talk about the game until after the release. You can only legally say "There is a beta and I have or am a Beta-test participant". It's standard fair for beta-testers.

OT: There is a beta and I am a Beta-test participant.

It seems like a MMORPG remix, with features from WoW, WAR and LOTRO.
I hope they took some time to make quests make sense.

Fair warning, they do check forums and such. They also are well within their rights to sue.

That doesn't mean they will. And how would they know who I am? Seriously, worst case is they do and they ban me from further tests. This isn't my first beta, NDAs get broken all the time, and nothing happens.

We were officially removed from the binding parts of the NDA all of three days after the first beta ended when the first escapist round went around. I'm assuming that the same rule has applied to each round since then.

OT: It's pretty good, but not earth-shattering. It still follows a lot of the standard MMO rules, and the two big features (the multiple trees and rifts) are lackluster. The trees don't have a *ton* of difference between them, and the Rift equivalent of Elitist Jerks will probably discover the best trees in no time, causing everyone to use them. The rifts themselves are fun, but definately require a group of people to complete, so never mind the idea of one man against the encroaching forces.

In all, fun game, a little too similar for my tastes.

Indeed, but unfortunately money speaks louder than informed gamers.

An MMO doesn't have to top WoW to be big. That being said, if you look at recent trends more often than not MMOs that have come out in the past couple years have been flops rather than successes. So just going by the odds I would say flop.

I don't see it pulling that many ppl in. Looks like it'll be another flavor of the month "lol this is gonna kill WoW!" before ppl get bored and go back to WoW in 2 months, but thinking they'll topple WoW is unrealistic, overall it just doesn't look like it has much to offer other then the generic fantasy mmo setting. If they can pull around 200k regular players it might be a success to them, seems it's just only players who are always screaming WoW killer these days.

I don't have anything bad to say about RIFT other than that it's simply not compelling in any way.

Yea the power builds are bound to happen until they have time to balance things. Happened in WoW, though, too. Shamans were just WAY overpowered in the early days, and became one of the most popular classes because of it.
Yeah, they'll have fun with THAT. I can't wait until the game opens and the forums *really* start filling with OP accusation and nerf/buff requests. With so many trees the game is going to be patched like mad.
