This man speaks the truth! If I could give an award to a single post, it would probably be this one. I'm a huge fan of classic games, and you've more-or-less summed up why. Not only that, but you backed it up with some great recommendations (How long has GOG been around?!?! What a great site!). Well done!

Now to tear into some Space Quest...

I think that the same good to bad ratio has always existed. People just think that all old games are good because they only revisit the good ones.
Oh, for sure. It' not like crappy games are a new thing, we just tend to either forget the crappy old ones or mock them for our amusement. Thing is when visuals weren't terribly good, the focus for many of the 'good ones' was either the gameplay or the story, rather than most every game todays who's sole focus seems to be on presentation, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but it does limit a games lasting value. The result is that many of those older 'good games' weren't simply good, they were great, and often displayed a level of replayability and lasting appeal that outmatch most anything made today.

Oh, and nice AV. Loved that show Reboot, and Megabyte was one of the most badass villains to ever, errr... live? Exist? Whatever, he was amazing. Nice to know I'm not the only one who remembers it!

Why thank you!

GoG's been around for awhile now and is actually a pretty damned good site, probably my favorite online distribution site out there which is why I like to promote it whenever the chance pops up (I'd do it even more if someone payed me to... hint hint!). It's still technically only in beta, but the variety is excellent so far and each game comes in a simple exe for installation and playing.

Made by the same guys who developed The Witcher too, go figure. They really loves them their classic games.

Sim Theme Park is a master piece... RIP Bullfrog. Best Theme Park game i have ever played, im looking at you Roller Coaster Tycoon you let me down :(

I think a lot of what you said is true... the medium is evolving, and some games i play now are hands down better than games i played when i was a kid. It all depends on the game. Perhaps more games seem like crap nowadays because we have more games being developed.

Back in my day, game developers didn't know what people wanted, so they tried a bit of everything. They were not afraid to try new things. That is what made those games great.

wait, you sold your ps3 and 360 for the wii...and consider that OLD GAMES!?
im sorry, those games are still new.
Remember primary school English? They often had lessons revolving around reading and comprehension. Teaching valuable life skills like how to read and comprehend. Like the part where he says he's been playing games on his PC that are 4-12 years old.

ON TOPIC:
I don't see anything wrong with modern games, but I do find old ones more interesting and sometimes more fun. For those who get told that nostalgia is the only reason you like old games, feel free to use me as an example. I never got to play these old games until recent times and there truly is something great about them. Not to say those great things are completely absent from modern games.

Also I agree with your comments on the Wii. I also get immense fun out of my Wii and whilst I have found myself looking forward to games like Red Dead Redemption, the most anticipated games for me generally are on Wii or DS.

Thoughts? Do you think games could do with rolling back the miles in some areas or, do you think new games should keep steamrolling down the road they are?[/quote]
They really do need to back up a bit. I've been playing nothing but older games for the last couple months and realized that these modern developers could learn a thing or two about being original if they just played something like MGS 1 or Twisted Metal.
