Is Rihanna's latest album a worthy sucessor to Good girl gone bad,
or is it all just about sex?

My thoughts on Rihanna's music have been expressed quite loudly in the past. I don't think she can sing pleasantly, and her music ranges from unlikeable to actually painful to listen to. It's genuinely caused me involuntary spasms of paroxysmal rage.
Interesting, I don't think I've ever heard anyone claim that Rihanna can't sing. Most seem to think that she has a good voice, whether or not they like the music itself.

Oh lawdy I really don't want to see another gimmicky youtube review of something.

It's a good album, let's just stop with the MSPaint and needless plugging.

I would emphatically state that, no, she can't sing.

Her, style you could say, is like a cheesegrater to my ears. But more objectively, it's pretty easy to see she just has no range at all.

Not just saying this because im a rihanna mark, but when someone has 6 number one singles, and has established herself as one of the most popular signers, and musical personalites on earth, they must have a half decent voice o_O

When was pop music ever about talent over style?
So by that argument we can conclude that she sold more than 25 million albums and 45 million singles worldwide becuse people like her style?

People in masses do not, nor ever will, buy a song to listen to because they like the signers style. pop music may not be to your taste, but if somethingsells that well, the fundementals of the factor have to be spot on.

It's actually nice to see this sort of thing, seeing as the other music reviewers around here (myself included) won't touch pop music. On the other hand the way you're talking in the video is just kind of annoying and the pictures weren't really adding anything to the experience. Honestly, you're probably better off just going with a written review, which has the added bonus of the reader being able to listen to an embedded youtube video of one of her songs or, if they so choose, something else entirely while assessing your opinions.

Oh dear, it seems we have quite a few music snobs here. "That's not real music, there's no talent involved! They have nothing on these generic metal artists I'm about to list!"

I grew out of that phase, you will too eventually.

No range? Huh, I would say the opposite. Compare for example the high notes in Love the Way You Lie to, say, Take A Bow. You'll find that, though not especially impressive, her range is certainly not any less than many other artists you'd care to mention.

I'm not even that big a fan - I mean, I do enjoy listening to her, but I wouldn't go out of my way to argue a point I knew was wrong.

My specific problem is with Rihanna herself, not with popular music as a whole. I tend to think that current-day popular music is more bland than terrible, but Rihanna's music has actually made me involuntarily spasm with paroxysmal rage. That should indicate that I find something profoundly wrong with the way she sings specifically.
Judging by our historical interactions, we don't typically agree on very much, but here we are of like minds: I like Rihanna best when someone else is singing her music (like say... Marie Digby covering "Umbrella"). Or even better, if nobody is singing - having heard the instrumental version of "Unfaithful" via Pandora, I can attest that the score itself is excellent. Play me any song where Rihanna actually sings though and I'll thumb it down near instantly.

In my mind she's the poster child for "generic female R&B vocals", and I pretty much hate those, and for that matter R&B in general, so there was never any way I was going to view her in a positive light; it's just not my idiom. But as my enjoyment of artists like say... Leona Lewis attests, it is possible to transcend that "is associated in some way with R&B" kiss of death (of my interest in listening to you for any reason), you just have to have a hell of a voice (also decent lyrics and song structures).

Which is certainly not something I would ever say about Rihanna - she's a singularly unimpressive vocalist. Not awful mind you, I don't find myself clasping my hands over my ears and wincing if one of her songs happens to start playing somewhere, but her tone and delivery combine into an overall performance that I find annoying and not enjoyable.

I don't really care for Rihanna, I don't think she has as much talent as everyone wants to say she does. It seems like half her "famous" songs she's just singing Chorus on, I mean Really? That's what everyone loves you for? We could go to a church choir and get someone to sing that. And her other songs just aren't that great, nothing new/inspiring. Nothing that makes you go Wow, she's just a really generic songwriter who just happens to be female with a talented voice (which automatically makes her a god in the Pop Music World).
