The wedding ring finger - finger next to your little finger on the left hand - is supposed to have been believed by ancient Romans and Egyptians to have had a major vein running from it straight to the heart.

I've also heard that they believed that the same finger on your right hand is the king ring finger, the finger that kings would wear their signet ring on, because the same ancient civilisations believed there was a major vein running from that finger straight to the brain.

Unfortunately I can't find anything about the second one on Google, I don't know if that's due to it being incorrect or just that people are far too preoccupied with the first piece of information for me to be able to filter anything out about another kind of ring finger or special vein.

Grr. Last post got eaten by forum fail.

I can't really wear rings. My fingers are pretty thin and my knuckles are noticeably wider than them. So anything that fits behind my knuckle moves around a lot and is generally irritating.

My fingers are much the same way. Course I haven't really worn rings for any real length of time in forever, so I don't know if they would get annoying.

OT: Well I know that a ring on your ring finger (which is where rings are put) means your married. But only on a specific hand. I don't remember which though. Other than that, I don't know quite what rings on different fingers mean.

No, I don't even know how to do it. It never actually works for me.

Engineers wear iron rings on their pinky finger. They are the engineer equivalent of a stethoscope.
This is thread win. Very thread win.
OT: Actually, this is something I get asked about or sometimes have to explain to students (in Japan). Which is surprising, since Western style ceremonies and customs for marriage are becoming more popular, but the wearing of rings part doesn't always carry over.

In Australia the left ring finger with a ring on it represents both the engagement and also the marriage, so people know they're taken.
But I swear pinky finger rings represent you are a pimp, just sayin'.
Does anyone where thumb rings anymore?
I wear thumbs rings. :3

Thumb rings are a sign of strength or leadership, some such like that anyway. Interestingly enough, I found that out a year after I started wearing my two rings on my thumbs.
Funnily enough, it's been about a year since I got these rings... Are you a wizard?
Yes, I am a wizard. *strokes long white beard*

I had one class ring I used to wear sometimes, but I kinda stopped caring. I would prefer a ring that has more meaning to it, or is at least very shiny.

Well, if you like something, you put a ring on it.
Is that why cock rings exist? (I'm kidding, btw. I know what they're for.)

OT: As far as I know, a ring on either ring finger can be married/engaged. On any other finger it means "I have no class". I've worn a family heirloom ring in the past, but stopped wearing it after a while. I'm just not a ring-wearing guy. It always felt kind of odd and pointless. Also, people gave me a hard time about wearing a gold ring, because they thought I was trying to look gangsta'.

Did those civilisations know that the brain was used for back then? I was under the impression it took a while for humanity to figure out. The heart being the organ for intelligence used to be pretty popular, I understand.

A black ring on the middle finger of one's right hand signifies asexuality. But this is a fairly new symbol and there are probably a lot of people out there wearing it not for that reason, but because they like black rings, so I'm not sure how useful that is.

The Greeks, who thought thought originated in the heart, believed the spleen to be the seat of emotion.

Galen, one of the most famous Roman physicians, believed that venous blood flowed from the liver and was consumed by the organs, and that arterial blood flowed from the heart and was also consumed by the organs. So he certainly wouldn't have believed that a vein ran to the heart.

Personally even though it technically symbolizes marriage, I wear my CTR ring on my left hand on the "ring" finger(right next to my pinky) But then it also doesn't fit my right hand or any of my other fingers so I am kind of stuck with it where it is. Even though it was fit for my right hand....go figure.

That's neat. I guess if it were to become common knowledge, what would probably happen is people would start wearing them if they just got out of a major relationship or aren't wanting to get picked up on a night out (much like straight women hanging out at gay bars), so it'd lose that specific meaning, but it'd still be a good indicator of where a person stands at that time.

I'm one of those people that tends to prefer function over fashion, so the list of rings I would wear is pretty short.

Ring of Regeneration.

The One Ring.

Ring of Three Wishes.

Brass Knuckles (hey, it counts!).

Ring of Arcana.

Maaaayyyyyybeee the Green Lantern's Ring. Maybe. (it *is* pretty gay.)

the only finger I think has a real meaning associated with it is the left ring finger being the finger associated with marriage. Interestingly, the reason is that ancient people thought that that finger was the closest finger to the heart or something.

Irony, you said you bother about 'function over fashion'. Yet would consider not wearing the most functional ring in all of fiction because it's 'kinda gay'?
It's pretty gay not because of how it looks or it's abilities, but rather it's weakness. Any jerk-ass with a can of yellow spray paint makes it powerless, as I understand it. If this is incorrect, please feel free to educate me =)
