I want to finish the Gothic series before I move on to Risen, which is taking a very long time because... well... I'm not playing Gothic 2 at the moment, but I'm definitely glad that they're making another one. The more Gothic-like games, the better, so I'll be buying this eventually.
Stop after Gothic 2 and skip to Risen. Believe me, you will regret playing Gothic 3 and Arcania. Absolutely fucking terrible games.
Haha. Yeah, I already know those games suck, but I'm curious, and I'll make sure to go in not expecting anything other than complete trash. Maybe I'll get some enjoyment out of them...

Risen like Gothic is not merely sexist, it is outright misogynistic. Worse, not only are the devs misogynists, many of the players are, at least the ones who see fit to post their filth and drivel in any of the official forums, which themselves receive no moderation. I have seen player posts on their saying that being a whore is a womans natural role, and when I have protested the post, I have received a warning and the original post left to stand. It is perfectly open, they make no secret of it.

All the ridiciulous claims that women wouldnt fit into the game as a protagonist are complete drivel and anyone who believes otherwise is clearly lying or retarded since this is for most people a SINGLE PLAYER GAME unafected by anyones choice of character, the story is basic and simple and could have been very easily adapted to a character of either gender with no effort to speak of. Also it is amusing to see people with no historical knowledge make assumptions about women throughout history. Women may have had less opportunities than men and been opressed, but this did not stop a small number of us from becoming rulers, generals, soldiers, mercenaries, pirates, bandits, mercenary leaders and just about any profession or occupation you can think of. The fact that it was unusual means nothing. Any character in an RPG is set to HEROIC standards, and can realistically be of either gender. The average woman may have been tending the fields, but so was the average man. RPG's are not about average.

No, they chose not to include women because they make sexism and misogyny a selling point of their games, which is why I will never pay for such a game and indeed would discourage anyone else from doing so. I frankly hope they go out of business sooner rather than later because their attitude is an insult to women and to any decent human being.

The protests about their lack of inclusion of women as player characters, and most fo the npcs being whores or servants has persisted throughout every iteration of this series, gothic and risen, and there has been no change. So it is clearly deliberate.

Right, so the game should be dismissed because the developers supposedly have something against women? Regardless of the quality of the games themselves? You are aware that Risen had an essential character who was female, right? The said character is returning in the second game too. There have been numerous female characters in both Gothic and Risen that have been portrayed as caring, nice people in a largely un-nice world. You did know that, right? I think you just don't like the fact that the game doesn't give you a choice of the gender of the protagonist. I may be wrong, but that's how it is coming across.

Fun aside, Risen 2 is a classic RPG that continues an existing story, spontaneous gender swaps would be kinda irritating.
Which is the reason that the copy of Risen 1 I got for free during the Steam Holiday Event is still sitting in my inventory, unused.

Besides, that's like when a guy says he wouldn't play Beyond Good & Evil or Silent Hill 3 because he can't play a hulk.
I don't recall either of those being RPGs. I'm no saying every game has to have that option. But every RPG should. If you want to tell a story about one specific guy, then drop the RPG pretense and just make an adventure game.
Hey, can I have it!?

OT: It's an rpg with pirates. Pirates! There's a reason why One Piece and the Pirates of the Carribean movies are one of my favorite things to dulge in.

I probably cheeck it out once I get my gaming pc ready.

I don't know about the whole pirate thing. On one side it could be interesting if it keeps to what the original Risen did and create a fairly unique world without resorting too much to stereotypes.

But it's also likely that the developers said "we need an identity" to reel in the customers and decided to implement a superficial pirate theme. Unfortunately the trailer gives that impression.

I was interested. A pirate-themed RPG? Fuck yes, count me in.

Then I watched a trailer and it started talking about an ancient prophecy of a chosen one.

Game was instantly relegated to the bargain bin list.

Yeah but Gothic and Risen ARE about the average man. He's meant to represent the guy sitting behind the computer, generally downcast and in a bad situation - like the protagonist! He then goes about building himself up - physique, fighting skills, magic - things the game player couldn't acquire in life anyway. (So why not do it in fantasy!?)

But yes, you do have a point. If a giant 20-foot man-eating beetle is possible in the game world, then surely a woman hero is also possible.

I picked up the first Risen as a hold over till the Witcher 2 releases for 360 (My PC can't run that beautiful beast D:) and while it's a slow boil it's picking up and I'm rather enjoying it (though the voice acting is terrible.)

The second promises pirates, improved combat and barefoot amazonian people (kink) then count me in, though the Witcher 2 is taking first priority. I just hope that a German VA option is included on the 360 version.

A few facts:
1. If you're playing Risen 1 on 360, you're doing it wrong. The 360 port was a horrible, ugly version of a primarily PC game.
2. Combat in Risen is about two things: Timing and dodging. If you button mash you will get nowhere. Time your clicks to coincide with the end of your strikes and your combat prowess will double or triple. Likewise, watch your enemies' attacks and know when to get out of the way.
3. Risen is an explorer's game. If finding hidden caves or emerging on top of a recently-exhumed Parthenon just in time to watch the rain fall doesn't sound fun, this may not be your cup of tea.
4. The third act sucks. Yep. No question about it. Acts 1 and 2 are great, though.
5. Risen is a small-budget game. Don't go in expecting thrilling voice actors, character creation, or more than one female character model, and you will not be disappointed.

eh,

I was looking at this game on steam but the fact that you can't play as a girl coupled with the fact someone said they like to portray women as 'staying in the kitchen' puts me off.

I could probably deal with the male only protag if the rest of the game doesn't treat women like they are brainless whores like The Witcher...

so you are saying women don't play games or that they don't have computers...

I think I will wait and see how women are treated within the narrative before I think about buying it.
