I personally blame it all on the rise in "reality based tv shows". I figure if you watch enough "Rock of Love", "Brooke Knows Best", or anything else on VH1 and/or MTV, you will in fact happily kill yourself or go insane to cope.

Well as your post had no suporting evdence, I don't feel the need for any either. so...

Wrong, the suicide/depression rate is not increasing, the media coverage of suicide depression is increasing. It was akways there, you just couldn't see it before. Although to be honest, there is a good chance the rate is increasing aswell, it makes sense. I can't say I care though, the world is a little overpopulated as it is.

Look average intelligence is not rising.. why? well it isn't because of any chemical or anything, its because people are having babies WAY later than they should. You should have your baby as early as possible to ensure the greatest IQ for you baby, you should NEVER have a baby at 35+ this can multiply the chance of genetic disorders 200 times what it would normally be. That may still not be much but you definatally wont have a smart baby. This applies to both parents, niether should be over 35. If you want to have a baby, the best time is when your 18 - 25 (its actually 14 - 25 if your a woman, but since its illegal to have sex at 17 minus, we just forget that fact in the US)

decreased communication between adults and young people means they make more ill advised decisions that an older, wiser person could have advised them better of (also this decreased communication could mean they get depressed more because they tend to not talk about things as much with adults)
Current research suggests the opposite; children are actually communicating much better with their parents.

...and also, a better source for this supposed 'rising' suicide/depression rate than "i know quite a few people (myself included) who have been depressed or considered suicide, and i know of one that has killed himself (not personally though)" is required. Being depressed comes with the territory of being a teenager, that has always been and maybe always will be.

Save the planet, Kill yourself!

I agree with the first reply. Suicidal thought does increase proportionally with intelligence.
I'm not sure we were ever meant to deal with the concept that life is meaningless.

Incorrect answer

The correct answer would be: 'a chemical inbalance in the brain'.
How about we rephrase the question for Captain Jung Van Freudian, Master of Psychology and Neuroscience, here.

What triggers the chemical imbalance in the brain that causes depression?

Many many things.

But one's own stupidity is usually not one of them.

The West doesn't have any idea what increasing depression/suicide rates are like. Japan, suprisingly enough (I know this cause I'm half Japanese, half English) has the highest suicide rates in the world, thought to be caused by the huge amount of peer pressure put on employee's and students. How high? 70,000 deaths a year high.

I do understand what your saying, and I myself do also know people who can be considered suicidal, but the fact is, compared to some other countries, it isn't nearly as bad.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Cases of genuine depression are probably about the same as they have be for 30 years or more. There has been an increase people doing "I'm depressed" but 80% of the time, they're not medically depressed. They just need a bit of a cuddle.
I speak from experience. Let's leave it at that.

Because 100 will always be the average, no matter how smart or stupid the people at the top of that bell curve are.

Or old way of going about stuff has been starting to fail for years now, but it's only just really starting to show. Imo, we're at the start of yet another small revolution that is to completely change our society.

Speaking as someone who both contemplated it and has seen its effects, suicide angers me because of what it does to family and friends, who are often haunted by the fact that they were unable to help the depressed person, who often never mentioned. But I can't just generalize it like this as many Suicide victims are unable to seek or receive help for various reasons. Its a complicated topic.

I will say this though. Is it getting worse? I don't know. Maybe. What are the reasons? I can't say for sure, but I can take some good guesses. Should it be getting better? Surely will all the advancements in psychiatric care and (for extreme cases) medication we should be making headway.
